It seems to us that the practice of asking those pupils who have oflended in any way during the day to stand up at the close of the school, and thus ofie.themselves as candidates for punishment, is little better than oflering a premium for falsehood. A boy is very anxious to get free from restraint at 4 o'clock in the afterneon, and if he is put in a place whore his conscience and his desire for play come in conflict his conscience will ba very likely to go down in the struggle. Pehaps one boy pulls another boys hair, or drops paper pellets down his back, and in various ways torments him all day. At various times during the day the poor victim asks his tormentor to desist but withont effect. At last the teacher says ''Those who have communicated dur ing the day or in any way violated the rules of the school will stand up." and the boy who has been toruientei all day, and who ou several occasions has said, "O, stop," or "O, quit," being a boy of conscience, stands up, and the teacher says, "You will remain fifteen minutes." Tno other boy keeps his seat, though bo haa whispered and played pranks all the hours. He passes out smiling at his conscieulioiH victim as he goes by him, and the poor boy who has suffered all day must suffer another sort of pain in being imprison ed fifteen minut.es, while the boy who did all the mischief i3 laughing and shouting on the street, l-'erhaps the conscientious boy spends the fifteen minutes in calculating how much It costs to b9 honest and truthful, and wondering whether in the broad affairs of life, trickery does not pay better than fair dealing.
We are fully satisfied that this is an error in administration, anil vftry manv of the best, teachers are of the same opinion. No childish conscience should be subjected to such a strain as this. A boy's conviction pitted ngRioat sport on a pleasant summer afternoon has not much chance. But weightier objections still are urged. It is asset ted by some that too many studi are introduced and made compulsory, and we sympathize with this view. Drawing is one of these, music is another, Wbils-i'ue mauofatorCDttrsS cyi srnuy *ttr the high school is spread out in tho "manual" until it reads almost like university curriculum. Now, the attempt to teach drawing to all pupils indiscriminately is simply absurd. There are multitudes of children—indeed the majority of them are so—who can see no more art in "the line of grace and beauty" than in a rail fence, and who nwver will learn to make a straight lino except as tbey have a straight edge to "draw" by. Ta make such a pupil's standing depend upon pro ticioncv in drawiDg.is as gross a wrong as to make it turn on the color of his hair or the shape of his nose. There

THE SUCCESSFUL PHYSICIAN. From the St. Locls Globe. There is probably no man to whom the community owe so much as to the honest fair-spoken physician, who does bis actual duty, both to himself and to his patients. Really skillful physicians are not so numorous that their virtues need no mention, and hence the advertisement of Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buff&lo, may well claim the reader's attention. Dr. Pierce is a type of a clasB of men who obtain success by careful and well directed effort, not attempting too much, or creating false ideas as to ability. The only reliable physician in these days of complicated disorders and high-pressure living is the "Specialist," the man who understands his one branch of the business. Such in bis line: is Dr. Pierce. For the benefitt)f his readers he has written a "Common Sense Medical Adyisor," which is well worth reading by those who need such a work. With strict business honor, high professional skill, reasonable fees, and a large corps of competent assistants, Dr. Pierce will doubtlsss make his name familiar as "household words."
