WIFE NO. 10,

BY ANN ELIZA 1TOFXG.

TIieMcsl BemftrkaWc Booh of the Year,

We have before us a copy of au extraordinary and singularly interestine work, over which the reading and thinking world is at the present moment very greatly exerted. Tbe book to which we allude, is Wife No. 19 by Ann Eliza Young," tbe rebellious wile of tbe great lieresiarch of the century—Brigham Young and is, tbo publishers announce, having an, onoruious sale it being necessary to run their press day and nigbt to keep up with the demand.

It is very difficult to do justice to a work like this. It must be read to be thoroughly appreciated, and we can fairly' venture to say tnat no one who takes it up and begins to read it will Wish to put it down until he has come to the last page. Prom cover to cover it absorbs tbl reader's attention and enlists his sympathies in no ordinary

d(,\o

work has ever before been given to the public by a real living Mormon woman, born and brought up in that «-trance superstition, and who could therefore present a perfectly true picture of life in Utah, and the inner workings of that extraordinary system wihch lias for so many years beet, a nfirDlexinjr problem to our national Legislature, but which bids fair to be solved through the untiring efforts of th?« brave woman in exposing fully ininuities of the "False Prophet." a. the will of "Brother Brigham," 'Monoon A»a Bite.

Seined of Mormonism and polygamy in all its forms. Her parents jointho movement when it was in its t-prv infancy. She was born a Mormen ami knows more of its dark side, and of its mysteries than any other living woman

The tacts connected withhersepara lion from Brigham are lamil.ar to all, but the story how she was 011 by lures of the false prqphet, of her life with him, of what she has felt and «2 perienced, is all new,

Airs. Young's early years we:re blighted bv tbe terrible faith in which Khe was reared. Refined and intelligent, she shrank from the gross teach ings of her spiritual guides, wt ith_a tender womanly heart she was shocked and horrified at the ^revelat.ona of crime which were forced upon her

polygamic household of her own parents. We learn from her page3 all nbout the origin, rise, and progress of Mormonism under its first promulgators. The secret murders of the "Destroying Angels," th& atroaious fraud3, the treason and the crime committed by Brigham Young and his associates, are all disclosed, graphically, earnestly, and with terrible effect to the light 01 day. The Mormon chieftain, the leaders in Utah their domestic lifo auil public career are vividly depicted. Bat the reader must judge for hiinsolf. The work comes fiuely endorsed by eminent men, and contains glowing introductions by John B. Gough and Mrs. Mary Livermore,_and with them we heartily commend it to the careful perusal of every one whose sympathies are drawn towards the suffering, the deluded, and the oppressed. Mrs. Young has two children to support from tbe proceeds of the book, and we sincerely hope it may have a large sale.

1E

It is published bv the well known firm of Dustin, Gilican & Vo., of Hartford, Chicago, Cincinnati ana Richmond, and is elegantly and strongly bound, well printed and beautifully illustrated, with nearly two hundred telling engravings, and is sold only by agents. Mr. C. S. Ball is agent lor Harrison and Honey Creek townships and will undoubtedly meet with fine success

The Congregationalists gave a Fair and Ice Cream supper, attheirchurch last Thursday evening, and had a very pleasant time.

Concert at tbe Presbyteriou church next Sunday evening. Let all attend.

Owing to business and domestic affairs, ye correspondent was unable to write for the

Gazette

last week, but

will try to be more regular in the future. Nothing tries the patience of a man more thau to put up a stove pipe. The joints are sure to not fit, or be too short or too long. He scrapes his hand, cuts his lingers on tbe edge of the pipe, but at lest when the pipe is put up, there can not be :t happitr man in Brazil than he.

Indianapolis, Bainbridge, Brazil & Montezuma Narrow Gauge Railroad, is the talk of Brazilians at the present time.

Water pipes have been laid along the east side of South Meridian street. They nin into the Merchants' Hotel, John S. Collins' drug store, and the residence of \V. D. Clark. A good example. Let others follow.

Holy Week in the Roman Catholic Church* This being Holy Week, the services at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, on Fifth street, will be unusually interesting. The "Lamentations" of the Prophet .Teremi-ih, with the psalms, will bo chanted by (he priests and, brothers, oil Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 7 o'clock, according to the Roman Breviary.

On Thursday morning at S o'clock, the Institution ot' the Lord's Supper will be commemorated by a solemn High Mass. After the Gloria is sung, all bolls in and about the church le main silent until Saturday.

On Good Friday morning, at 8 o'clock services commeroratiug tbe death of Christ upon the Cross will bo performed Priests and people will come forward, in turn, to kiss the Cross, which is laid upon the floor of the Sanctuary.

On Saturday morning, at 8 o'clock, fire will be blessed in the vestibule of the church, from which the caudles and lamps in the church are lighted afterwards. Tne Paschal Candle and the Baptismal Water, are also bies3ed at this time.

The Acoustics of the State Normal School. Editois Evening Gazstte:

Your invitation for somebody to take the perpendicular to elucidate a difference in opinion between the Hon. Johu T. Scott and the Terre Haute Express, in regard to tho acoustics of the laige lecture room of tho State Normal School, came under my notice, and appears addressed to me as the architect of the building.:I wish it to be understood by the public, that this lecture room was not finished under my superintendence, nor some other works in the structure, which area disgrace to the State of Indiana. If the room had been under my charge, and finished upon my designs, the acoustics would have been perfect.

Respectfully Yours, J. A. VJRYDAOFT.

Prof. Wiley

desires

us to state

that he has not got the Centennial tea party money spoken of in a city paper. He wishes that he had in order that he might send it to Indianapolis and get credit for it in the fund. Most of tho money yet sent has been forwarded by Mr. Wiley himself— $103 some time ago, and $4G last Saturday, and $2 sent by some other party—and he does not know who holds the tea party money. It would help out the case greatly if that fund, however small, could be produced,

The Express is mistaken in stating that Barnett, Palmer and Swift the east end marble men recently received 12 car loads of scotch granite. Grauito is not like •'uuworshipful corn or hogs and it takes a great deal of money to fill a single car of it. Twelve cases is what the firm recieved. Thirty more cases are 011 the road. The firm has ils handsome work bared to the winds in scores of quiet grave yards over thi? state and Illinois.

The Roll of Henor..

The progress of many a bright and

promising scholar is often arrested and discouragement brought 011 by absence from school caused in so many cases by a cough, cola or a sore thro«t. Give Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup and let your children answer "present" when the roll is called.

THE SUCCESSFUL PHYSICIAN. From the St. Louis Globe. There is probably no man to whom tho community owe so much as to the honest fair spoken physician, who does hh actual duty, both to himself and to his patients. Really skillful physicians are not so numerous that their virtues need no mention, and hence the advertisement of Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, may well claim the reader's attention. Dr. Pierce is a type of a class of men who obtain success by careful and well directed effort, not attempting too much, or creating false ideas as to ability. The only reliable physician in these days of complicated disorders and high-pressure living is the "Specialist," tbo man who understands his one branch of the business. Such in his line is Dr. Pic-rco. For the benefit of his readers he has written a

Common Sense Medical Adyisor," which is well worth reading by thoso Who need such a wnrk. With Strict business honor, high professionalskiii-,' reasonable fees, and a large corps ot ompetent assistants, Dr. Pierce will doubtless make his nan,o. familiar as household words."
