From our Regular Correspondent. Washington, April 5.
One of the pleasantest places to visit at this season of the year is the agricultural department. Its grounds are not exteSsive, but they »re tastefullv arranged and decorated. There Srees of every variety which can bear out door exposure in this latitude and Mr. Saunders is busy with liis men putting out the more delicate plants whose beauty oalj un^

in the extreme. Its neatness strikes you at once. On- the lower floor tiiere are the rooms of the officers, the library, and laboratory of the chemists. Nature has hidden her secrets well, but men have found them, till now her processes of growth, her laws, and even her caprices are understood. The marvels of the microscope are a perpetual delight, but one's eyes soon grow weary, and the museums up stairs are more attractive. Many of the cases are like those of the Smithsonian, containing specimens of animals, of fish, and of birds whose plumage vies in coloring with the richest tints of the flowers. Then there are plaster casts of all vegetable and fruits so perfectly painted (hat one might fancy them real, there are bits of every kind of fibre known to manufacture there are grains from all lands ani the little silk worm has its own case, showing clearly its marvellous industry its various species, its peculiar cocoons a?.d all the interesting habits of the quiiet insect whose shroud makes precious a treasure for covetous man.
Many a time handling the delicate cocoons I had wondered how it was possible to unwind tbe tiny threads but this little workman makes no mistakes and the end once found there is no break or tangle til! the whole cocoon has been reeled off Prof. Glover took oue of the dainty yellow balls, found the end pullin out the almost invisible strand till many yards were measured withou any symtom of weakness.
AMONG THE BUGS.
Prof. Glover's specialitj1- is the stu dy of insects, In the cases of the room where he presides you may find everything which crawls or flies or hops. Tbe larmer v.ho finds hi crops injured by some unknown marauder Las only to watch till he secures a specimen of the little pest Let him send this (o the Department with a statement of its ravages and and he will recieve an account of the creature's habits of the circumstances under which it thrives and of the agencies which can be employed for its extermination. In addition to all the actual bugs, appropriately impaled and classified. Prof. Glover has en graved their portraits upon copper as perfectly as if the sun had photographed them, and from these plates have been prepared so accurately numbered that a single glance v?ill show the result of years of investiga tion. The professsor is a character. His eccentricities are his pride his work his delight, and if you happen to strike his fancy you will find him wonderfully entertaining. I think he likes to show a little bit of roughness at first, but it is only assumed, and if he will invite you to examine tbe apartments where he lives you will find such treasures of books and rare plants, and so many odd fancies that you will be reminded of the
Old Curiosity Shop." There is one difference. That was musty and dusty and forlorn, but no old" maid housekeeper was ever morejfastidiou9ly neat than^.th© professor, auicl craves sunshine as eagerly as the plants he loves so well. Leaving the museum and ascending another stair-case, you come to what tlie professor terms his "kitchen." Here the birds are skinned 'here with deftest handling the skins are stuffed, wired and mounted here the plaster casts of fruits anu vegetables are made and painted, and the bugs are impaled upon the spike-like pins. It is an interesting room, but its odors are not those of "Araby the bleat," and you are willing to escape to tbe herbarium, though there is nothing there to see except shelves piled with the books containing dried plants. The smell of the various "yarbs" isn't very delicious, but this branch of tbe department is one «f its most valuable features.
In the room of the Statstician ever so many clerks are busily sort ing returns from the bureaus throughout the country. Estimates are made of all crops and pamphlets furnished containing information about souls and climotic influences. Congress has never been very enthusiastic in its love or care for this department and without liberal appropriations nothing national succeeds. To merchants and bankers and profess* ional men, agriculture is oniy a sec ondary matter, but our great coun try, owes its strength and wealth so largely to the farming interest that we ought to make its welfare a subject of thought and care.
THE APPROPRIATION BILL ia just now engrossing the attention of the House. The spiciest equabblings of the whole session take

Jace during the discussion of this so yesterday Messrs. Garfield and Randall, engaged in a tilt. Randall has a certain smart sharpness, but he never can control nis temper while Garfield, the impersonation of good nature receives every onset with a laugh, oiten catching the missiles adroitly and skillfully flinging them back iu the face of his enemy. He certainly had the best of the affair yesterday. The impeachment papers were presented to the House on Monday, and yesterday they were carried to the Senate by the Manageis. It was a solemn affair. The six gentleman took their suits in front of the Clerk's desk. There the Sergeant at Arms exclaimed "O hear ye! O hear ye! All peisons are commanded to keep silence on pain of imprisonment while the House of Representatives is exhibiting to the Senate of the United States articl.s of impeachment against William W. Belknap, late Secretary of War!"

The articles, were then read amidst the most impressive silence, and the Managers withdrew. The trial will not commence for several days. When it does there will be the most eager interest. Many of Gen. Belknap's friends think he will be acquitted, but bis acquittal will only stain more deeply the character of his wives, so the poor man has little to choose.
The Senate had a long executive session, and Mr. Dana's rejection was made certain. That unfortunate letter ruined his cause, since it was argued thai a man who could not allow grave consideration of his fitness for a grave responsibility without showing so much irritation, must lie wholly disqualified for assuming.

tbe delicate and intricate duties of so important a mission. Who comes next? The men who can endure the sharp criticism of these critical times are few indeed.
The. President., has been very un--well for several days/ It is said he suffers from neuralgia. That is bad enough, physically, and then, unless he-is adamant, there must be mental neuralgia quite as hard to endure.
Matters, are looking badly again for General Babcock, thongh they are trying to prove Bell a man unworthy of belief. Decidedly mixed are our political affairs just now, and the return of Gen. Meigs is inconvenient for President Grant.

TiiE SUCCESSFUL PHYSICIAN. From the St. Locis Globe. There is probably no man to whom the community owe so much as to the iioncst fair-spoken physician, who does Ubv, uotH.— and to his patients. Reallylikinru physicians are not so numerous "that their virtues need no mention and hence the advertisement of Drl R. V. Pierce, of Burfalo, may well claim the reader's attention. Dr. Pierce is a type of a class of men who obtain Bticces»rby careful and well directed effort, not attempting too much, or creating false ideas as to ability. The only reliable physician in these days of complicated disorders and high-pressure living is the "Specialist," the man who understands his one branch of the business. Such in his line is Dr. Pierce. For the benefit of his readers he has written a "Common Sense Medical Adyisor," which'is well worth reading by those who need such a work. With strict business honor, high professional skill, reasonable fees, and a large corps ot competent assistants, Dr. Pierce will doubtlsss make his name familiar "household words."
