To Advertisers,
The publishers of the
GAZETTE
recently purchased from the Cincinnati type foundery a complete new dress of type. It has been resolved to enlarge the paper to eight columns. These improvements we trust will be duly appreciated. They will enable advertisers to essay much better style in their notices, and will give the
GAZETTE
more "breathing
room" for the extra reading matter that it is henceforth proposed to run As this is the beginning of the spring season, and as these improvements are not temporary ones, but the natural outgrowth of increased business, it is hoped that advertisers will see the point and send in their notices, should our solicitors fail to pall on them. At 15 cents per week the QA ZETTE Is oy far the 'cheapest paper published in this vicinity.

A Splendid Store.
The grand opening of Mossier Bros', new store in Fletcher «ft Sbarpe's building, last night attracted a large crowd to that quarter, and for awhile the sidewalk was almost impassible. The desire to see this magnificent store was overpowering. There was a band of music playing. The store, with its large display windows, were handsomely decorated, and a warm welcome was given to all. The finishing of tne interior and the furniture was very fine. The cases are of carved walnut. Full length pier glasses, finished in gilt, adorn the wall?, and the main room runs tho full length of the building, while across room extends to Pennsylvania street-. It is a. magnificent place, a real business palace. The opening will be continued during the week, and out of mere curiosity should be seen.— [fndianapolis Evening News.

This room will place Mr. Joseph nearer the business center of town, and will enable his customers, scattered in large numbers over town, to reach him more conveniently. Mr. Joseph is a man very popular with the purchasing portion of Terre Haute, and this move of his will be duly appreciated.

RAILROAD NEWS.
Items Called om Every Source. The GAZETTE recently--contained a statement in this department, that there are something over 200 .trains run daily over the Pennsylvania road Citizens laid the fluttering unction to their souls that this was doing pretty well. It is, therefore, with' regret that we give publicity to the following serap irom aD exchange, which records the fact that England is away ahead of us:
The average number of trains running on each week day over the Metropolitan extension of the Chatham and Dover line, twelve miles, is 546 and the number of passengers conveyed over these twelve miles in six months is over sev-n millions. The Metropolitan railway conveyed on Whit Monday Inst, over 244,000 per sons. During the Whitsun week, over 1,(188OOO passengers traveled on tint iiuiii-rgioui.d line. Oiu sixteenth of the entire population of London made use of this railway iu one day, without an accident,
Indianapolis reports a marked improvement in local traffic. The n' earnings of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati Lafayette road (or the quarter endnm March 31st, show an increase of §51,000 over the earnings in the corresponding month of 1875.— [Exchange. A WORD FOR NARROW-GAUOE ROADS.
Tho average cost of Indiana standard gauge roads now running is over $G0,per mile, while it is claimed narrowgauge roads can Lo built at an average cost ot §15,000. In these estimates are included the equipments. Tho friends of narrow-gau- still further claim that they can haul ton for ton of paying load at the same rate of speed, and for fifteen per cent, less cost of operating. The most prominent objection to this class of roads is their inability to run their cars further than to their terminal points, where they must transfer. But as cond thought on this matter will convince one tuat this cost of transferring don't hold good solely against uarrow-gauge lines, as on most standard-gauge roads an additonal charge, equal in amount to the cost of transferring freight, is made where cars are used by a connecting road.—[ind.
