THE RATIOS AT, ISAlfK OF XMIS €1TY MAM SUCH A lUK!tf.

Through the courtesy of its offlceis a GAZETi'KiiK was permitted tbis morning to see the new time lock recently put into the safe of tho National State Bank. It is of tho Yale pattern and is a beautiful little machino made of stoel bronzttd," and higb'y polished, mid vejy ornamental. This lock is designed to be used in commotion with ether locks, as an additional security, and can bo applied to any vault or sale door where there is a vacant space of eight and a halfincbes wido l»y six incites high, without makinu a hole through the door, or in any way ohanginp or disturbing the other locks ur bolt work.

T.'jf) recent robberies by MASKED llDEGIiAUS, where in each instance the house of the cashier has qeen forcibly entered, the entire family gagged, bound and se cured in a helpless manner, while the cashier himself was dragged lrom homo, taken to tho Bank, and there, under threat oi instant death or torture forced to unlocK the doors, prtvo that ordinary locks wlone, no matter how secure otherwise, arf" of little

thwarting the carefully arranged plots of PROFKSSIONAIi BASK R0BUKES,

Instances also are not of frequent occurrence where the combination has been fraudulently obtained by inside or outbids parties, who were thus enabled to visit tbe vault under cover of night, and, having access to the valuables and books, have carried on their peculations undetected, perhaps for years. Again, should alocK be picked, or punched off, the safe or vaule is at the mercy of the burglars. For the reasons above set forth, tbe need of an

has long been felt, and realizinlJ that whatever a man controls other men can control also, or force him to do so to their advantage, inventors have for many years turned their attention to devising somo arrangetnen of mechanism which, being automatic in its working would accomplish tho desired result.

To obviate these evils tho inventive talent of tho oountry has long been at work in an attempt to get up some thing the aotion ot* which will be automatic. Tho

GAZETTEER

The clock work operates on two dials made of polished steel, aiound the rim of which area number of little bolts, susceptible of being pulled onward or forced back. When back, as the dial moves round, these bolts elevate a little wheel-shap-ed piece of steel, fastened at the end of a pivoted bar, which, when elevated in turn, acts upon a piece of steel and this latter prevents the sliding back of the bolts, fastening the door. During such hours as it :s desired, to have tbe door entirely controlled by tbe ordinary combination lock, the small bolts in the dial, one for each of the twentyfour hours in the day, are pulled out, aud when the diaj, carrying them, passes round, of course no operation is effected on the little wheel-shaped steel and the door can be opened.

The machine works* on the double entry principle. Everything in it is in duplicate. There are two dials, two wheel-shaped pieces of steel, two bars —two, in fact, of everything. Although expensive, tbis machine, in tbe sense of security, it gives to the bank officers is really worth its avordupois in bullion. It is not set to open exactly at 7 o'clock each morning.

having seen a chronometer or time lock at Washington, attached to the great safe which contains hundreds of millions ol the nation's treasure. This lock is arranged on tho principle of clock. At the expiration of a given number of hours, the works run down and tho bolts are allowed to slide back The Treasurer winds up tbi3 lock each eveuing, and when the door is shut tho power or might of angels, themselves, cannot get into the sale until 9 o'clock next day at which time the combination has run its course. At tbis time of day any attempt of masked robbers to force afi ontramso, would be the .eestasy of folly. Tho lock, which is now on the safe at tho National State Bank of tbis city, and which, though small, cost $400, is made from a different pattern, in order to answer the only objection made to the Sargent time lock, or the one used at Washington. This objection lavs in the fact that when a door controlled by a Sargent lock is closed at any time,"it is impossible to open the same again until the allotted number of uours have wound their slow length away. Some times during the day, the» bank door is closed, it may ba by mistake, and it is a great nuisance to be compelled to wait nutil morning before ogening it. The Yale lock does not operate at all during tbe day, but confines its vigils to the silent hours of the night. Its partiality for nocturnal labors of this character may be attributed to the following causes
