Fridiy Evening, Jlarcli 31, 1876

Yeslerday when a Detroit boy's feet flew up aud seated him Ju the slash 011 Congress street a strauger happened to be near and helped the lad up. Not feeling as if this was enough, he led the boy along to a peanut staud aud filled his pockets with fresh roasted. The (ears disappeared with the peanu's, and as the last handful was crammed down the boy asked: /Do you live here, nai3ter •'No, bub—I'm a stranger in Detroit." "Won't von please «it some money and buy a house and live here all the rest of the time?" inquired the boy in ft beseeching voice.

Yesterday as a good»hearted boy Was going up Woodward ayenue he saw a poor bluebird fluttenug in a garden, ns if nearly Irozen to death and the idea at once came to him to go and get it and doctor it up and care for it until the balmy bree*es of spring camealoug: He climceu the feuce to carry out the uoOie purpose, but a dog came bown and bit him in lee, the owner of the ptace came out aud slamed liitxa through tht gate in a hurry, and a big policeman came along aud yelled out: "Boy, ,fu don't behave yonrseh you'll git to !he gallnsl

with a Boman temple, _'ahcl, lastly, with a Christian cliureh^haB been in turn the shrine of tho legend, the romance, and the religion of at least twenty centuries. Though not always isolated, it was always sacred. The remains of the vast forest of Quoquelunde, as late as the sixth century, still stretched from the mainland to the rocky mount. In the seventh century the remnants of it disappeared before the inroads of the rapid tide, but a wooded slope 011 the north-east side of the island still recalls the aneicnt homes of the Druids and the earth, in many parts, is riddled through and through with countless warrens, made by tho Lineal descendants, 110 doubt, of the old forest rabbits of the mainland. As we iloolc up at tho wondrous pile from the snnds, and note tho mighty walls and towers behind which nestles for protection the little town, the eye measures those ancient granite masses, as solid and colossal as tho rock on which they tand, and is fairly bewildered at the brupt elevation, one above the other, of oastle and monastery, until, on the summit of tho whole, a vast cathedral, wonderful to behold even in its decadence, leaps into the air with flying buttress, pinnacle, and spire. And who built it, and how was it built? Wo know where tho granite camo from but how were the immense blocks floated over from the neighboring Eochers do Cancales, hardly visible in the remote distance How were they got across that shallow, treacherous tide, or how, when the sea went out, were they prevented from sinking into the sands These are light matters, as tho student of St. Michel's Mount will soon learn. Was not tho great Archangel watching over the destinies of his shrine A string of miracles, a group of shin ing legends, light up the pages of its eventful history. As we read far back in tho past, tho colors seem all fresh like tho gold and azuro of the ancient missals on the yellow parchment of the monastery itself. Tho good Bishop St. Paterae, of Avranches, (sixth cen tury,) sent through tho forest of Quoquelunde his band of pious workmen, who cleared part of the rock, and founded two churchcs to Sts. Symphorien and Stephen, and a monastery. St. Scubilion was the first abbot, but tho Christian legend begins only after the washing away of the forest in the seventh century. Then it was that St. Michael twice visited St. Aubert, (A. D. 70S,) Bishop of Avranches, and pointed to the isolated rock as his chosen sanctuary. Tho holy man, mistrusting such visions, opened his Bible and meditated on St. John's .woz'ds, "Beloved, believo not every spirit, but try tho spirits." Again he fell asleep, and this time St. Michael pushed him roughly with one finger on the side of his head, (pulsatur austerins,) upbraiding him with his sluggish incredulity and the Bishop aroso to found a church endowed with his OAVU lands, and destined to become one of the most famous pilgrimages in Christendom.— Good Words.

ANCTJ:NT DISCOVERY.

The German exploration of the Peloponnesus has been begun very favorably, having been rewarded by the discovery of a marble statue of Victors*,

a

beautiful Nike, in excellent

preservation. The interest and importance of the discovery are enhanced by the fact that tho figure bears upon it a perfectly legible inscription, recording that it is the work of Patonios, of Mende, in Thrace, the contemporary of Phidias, and was made by him for the Messenian colonists of Naupaotus, by whom it was presented as a votive offering to the Temple of Jupiter at Olympia, after the third Messenian war, which had continued ten years and ended B. C. 455. Considering how i'ew works there are which can with certainty bo assigned to the age of Phidias, and how small is the number of those which can be referred to any one sculptor whose name is known to us, the success of tho German explorers of Olympia is a lasting gain to the whole world of art. The genuineness of this interesting "find" receives confirmation, ns Professor Overbeck has shown from the writings of Pausmias, in which the votive Nike of the Messenians is described, and an account is given ol the faots which had led to its offering, and whioh differed from those recorded by the Inscription. The same writer also refers to Pal on 5 os as the sculptor of the statue, and indicates the special parts of the great Temple of Jupiter which were the work 01 his hand.

A JAVANESE FUNELLAT.

A marine on the Japanese frigate Tsukubu, at San Francisco, died recently, and was buried according to Japaueso rites. Tho remains, in a coffin-shaped box, two and a half feet high, covered with tho Japanese flag, were brought ashore in the steam launch, escorted by four officers and sixteen marines. The coffln was placed in a hearse and conveyed to the cemetery, the escort following. A double line was formed, through which tho coffin was carried to the grave. The remains were lowered into the gravo so that the body faced toward the cast. After the firing of three rounds by the marines, the grave was closed, a short address wa3 delivered by one of the officers, and then the marines formed the sand over the grave into a shape resembling the coffin. This concluded the ceremonies, and the marines returned to their ship. rti per nay at home. Sum»5 tO pl?s worth SI free.
