Greett tea notbd^gj more nor less tban.a -poisonous inanufaor tuS^tomert tho of a vitia? teid tftste.. Black tea is'tlie. le^f in its natural state. Most of the varieties are, however, too mild to satisfy a palate used to pickles and mustard, and pepper-sauces and like condiments. The dealers, therefore, kindly poison the leaf and produce what they are pleased to [advertise as "a superior quality of green tea." At one time ten pounds of green tea were sold in the American market for every pound imported. The process of adulteration was perrormed at the sea-board, A long cylinder, turning slowly over a fire, was half-filled with black tea. Then handfulls of turmeric, indigo and other poisonous matters, were thrown in. After the whole had been cooked together the stuff came out as green1 tea. Each leaf was perhaps coated with copper! Since then "Chinese cheap labor" has supplanted Caucasian!cunning. The Mongolian ships the tea already greened, and so saves the importer trouble. Unfortunately for us, the almond-eyed Mongolian, who surpasses his Christian brethren in so many things, excels in the art of adulteration the coloring matter

The "lie tea," we may add, flourishes in New Jersey, and is carefully cultivated there—it is not difficult to surmise why. There is such a thing as pure green tea, but it is much weaker than the artificial stuff, and has to be prepared by a process of drying that is long and costly.

TIIE GREAT TEMPtE OF MORMON

A writer In the

Des Moines Register,

describing scenes in and about Salt Lake City, thus describes the temple of Mormon in that city:

There is no service in tho Mormon temple during winter, as there is no way of warming it. But we are permitted to visit and inspect it. It is the finest and largest auditorium we have ever seen, capable of seating twelve thousand persons, finished in the best style under ithe most scientific principles of acoustics. It is two hundred and fifty feet long, yet a whisper can be heard from the speaker's stand to the farthest part of the audience. The organ is as large as an ordinary church, is fiftyfive feet high, and is said to be as superior in tone as it is in workmanship. The new temple, on which there has already been over $2,000,000 expended, is not over ten feet above the ground, and yet it is not one third as large as Iowa's new state house. It is being built of as fine and durable granite as New England can boast. It is said there is enough of this granite in this region to wall in the United States with walls as ample in dimensions aa those of ancient Babylon.

AN ISIFERIAIa STABLE.

For some eight years the stables of the Emperor of China have contained no elephants, the last of the noble animals belonging to the establishment having died that length of time ago. Since then one of the glories formerly connected with imperial processions has been wanting and the Emperor has been obliged to ride in a sedan chair instead of in his elephant carriage. The old time splendor of these occasions is to be revived, for the Emperor has just received from the King of Burmah seven elephants. The animals arrived at Pekin recently after a toilsome march of about eighteen months. The

Pall Mall Gazette

says

it is probable that they arrived in the train of the envoys to whose intrigues the ill-feeling on the part of the Chinese toward Colonel Brown's expedition, which found vent in the murder of Mr. Margary, has been by some attributed.

PHYSICAL POWERS EQUAL.

In the rural districts of Portugal, the women work in the fields from early childhood, sharing to the full the toil and fare of the men. Yet a more healthy, comely, and contented race of women is not met with the wide world over. No pale, thin, careworn matrons or maids are found among them, but almost without exception, they are vigorous in frame, strong and lithe in step, and cheerful and winning in countenance. Something of this is to be ascribed to the feeling of security and independence that comes from a sure tenure of their homes, which, though rented, are retained for generations on comfortable terms. Something is owing, too, to a genial climate, and to the comparative ease with which the necessities of life can be provided. Yet the fact tends to show that with identical habits of living, the physical powers of men and women should be equal.

The late Guikwar of Baroda was supposed to have had the most magnificent coat ever made in India, valued at six lakhs of rupees, or $275,000, which he sent as an offering to the shrine of the Prophet at. Mecca. But this coat is about to be eclipsed by one lately made for the Maharajah xf Puttiala, which, a correspondent of the

Delhi Gazette

tells us, is

"valuedat fifteen lakhs ($675,000), set with precious stones, and fringed about the collar, cuffs, and front with large pearls. The coat will be worn lit the durbar of the Prince of Wales/'
