Cabinet Receptions on Wednesday-
A Photograph of Variety Fair. "A l)recm of Fair Women."
Every Wednesday, if the sun shines, feminine Washington arrayeth itself in purple and flue linen to make the cabinet calls, for the ladies of that distinguished circle are among the regulation rights to be seen by all visitors. The hours are from two till five, so, if the entire round is to he made a carriage is requsue. Ihis luxury is expensive, costing
stables
two dollars per hour, but if
you are ft regular customer, your eloquence may be indulged at a dollar and a half for the same time. It is funny to watch the coachman when rarnred round some mansion they wait for the egress of their lair freightage mind! I dont say bagirate The respectable private coachman feels his consequence quite n* thoroughly as the lady he serves.
He is as careful of his dignified pose upon his box, his manner ol hojduig his whip, and the number buttons as if he owned the entire es tablishment, and he gazes
wlth
its extremely awkard, but Madame haa done her duly, you are quite at liberty to look at her as much as you please, and she does make a picture, for Mrs. Robsrson is a strickingly
handsome woman, her figure is su-
masses of her silver hair over Still youthful face are crown extremely
becoming.
Very different i3 the welcome you .eetatMrs Bristow's, She is simmeet ply esquisite, every way,
never a bit
haughty, but genially «raceful she greets you warmly, utters some bright bit of thought, and then if her at tention is claimed by entering guests, she at once introduces you to some one who shall make your call agreeable. Yesterday, it was pretty Miss Denison of Ohio, who assisted, and very charmingly she talked, fascinating my escort till I ordered him away. Mrs. Er.stow's sture is not easily given, she is tall and slight, her toilettes are always rich, but her whole charm Jies in the expression of mouth and eyes, such great soft brown eyes, looking straight into your own with an earnest, question iug glance. while round the moutli there is always a smile so winning that were I a man I should euvy tfce secrenitary Lis light to basK in such radiance. This isn't gushing. I know Mrs. Bristow, and I love her. Our next call was upon the wife at the Secretary of war, Mrs. Belknap. The fame of her beauty needs no help from my pen, she is remarkable lovely, but Oh! Miss Bel knap is far more attractive than her mamma. You will find her throned on the piano the sweetest morsel of babyhood that ever came to gladden a hosehold. 8he is delicious you want to bite her just a little, you know, and yon stand worshiping the year old darling wondering if all her life shall be as rose-hued as now, hoping most devoutly, that sorrow shall never bow that rare golden head. The child is the god daughter of Mrs. Fish, and to her house I will take you next. Usually every nook is filled with eager visitors, but sometimes your hostess has a- minute's respite. How many years she has stood within her gates receiving all who chose to come! Her wonderful memory retains every name and every face, a dignified stateliness marks her manner, but find so slight a reason for getting over that first formality, and behold the truest womanly heart that ever beat, so true that when Mrs. Fish ehall utter any sentence you may know that she means it, and so unselfish that weariness and care are counted for naught if she may accomplish any good, Well has she won the title, "the first lady in America!"
At tbe Post Master Generals it is always pleasant to linger, Mrs. Jewell is eo cordial, and Florence (absurd to call her Miss Jewell) such a tiuy rosebud of a girl, that welcome seems warmer there than anywhere el9e. Young people are always to be found there Tbe tables of refreshments are very tempting, while there are pictures that pay you for looking.
Mr. Pierpoint the new Attorney General lives in the tbe House built by Gen. Meigs. Its construction is peculiar, but never mind the house for tbe hostess is well worth all your attention. It is easy to see what her life.-longassociations must have been the high-bread face with its delicate features, tbe graceful manner, and low sweet voice, all mark the lady! born to that name. Mrs. Pierpoint is winning love and admiration from every one she meets, tribute freely given, and accepted eo charmingly, that one wishes there were more to bestow.
Now to Mrs. Chandler's, we know exactly how Mrs. Chandler will stand, and how warmly she will clasp our offered hand, but we have not quite recovered from our surprise when we first saw her, you can hardly believe her a grandmother! That fair queeuly woman with no wrinkles in her face, no trace of age anywhere il n'est pas possible. Yet Mrs. Hale, her daughter, has two lovely children. Mrs. Chandler receives with perfect composure and grace, she is never flurried, never at a loss for a word or phrase, and you are quite at liberty to wander about the spleudid parlors at will. No party of the season has been more brilliant than the card reception given there two weeks ^go. Our circuit was complete at last reviewing it, I call it. *'A dream of fair women." I have not exaggerated dear friends, they are all fair in one way or another, and when on some state occasion, tuey assemble &t the White House, you will beleive more implicitly than now, that American women like American productions generally are—but I have exhausted all my superlative?.
s"*
premest disdain upon ^be horses knows to be hired, and the sham liveries worn bj the drivers of ordinary coaches. "Caste" everywhere my dear! just note it yourself the next time you see a line of Jehus.
Yesterday the whole city was seized with a mania for calls so extensive, the whole population seemed on wheels, for the streets were full, and one caught glimpses of rosy cheeks, bright eyes and dainty hats, so plumed with nodding feathers that we wondered if the stately birds of the desert had any of their beauty maining.
We do not take the ladies in order of their proceedence at all, direct our course so as to economite the precious time and therefore Mrs. Roberaonis the finest whom we shall greet, up the steps and into the hall, the lady stands near the mantel. She turns, flashes a look as bright as her diamonds, gives you her gloved hand for|a second, and then unless you are somebody she is oolitic enough to cultivate, you are 4 Eft entirely to ist Thats very we
An Amicable \djustment. Pittsburg, Feb. 13.—Yesterday was the date agreed on by the puddlers aud iron manufacturers two months ago for a renewol of the conference iu regard to tbe price to be paid for boiling iron. Tbe meeting was held with closed doors, but was harmonious throughout, both sides appearing very anxious to avoid a lockout at tbe present time. At the adjournment the following agreement was drawn up and signed by both sides: As far as the trade will warrant, the mills will continue in operation. Tho price for boiling ior the present shall be suspended. The conferonce convention shall meet again on Mondav, February 21, at seven o'clock P. Author of "The Peoples' Common Sense Medical Adviser," eta., etc. Knowing that you sre subjet to a great amount of suffering, that delicacy on your part has strong tendency to prolong it, and the longer it is neglected the more you have to endure, and the more difficuli to cure your case becomes. I
as a

Ahoy had rather die and have their sufferings ended, than to live and suffer as they have. They say they are worn out by suffering and are only made worse by treatment, of any thing more discouragiug

irritating caustic treatment and strong medicines will never cure you. If you would use rational means, such common-sense should dictate to every intelligent lady, take such medicines aa embody the very best invigorating tonics and nervines, compounded with special reference to your delicate system. Such a ha Dy combination yon will find in my Fa vorite Prescription, which has received the highest praise from thousands of your sex. These languid, tiresome sensations, causing you to feel scarcely able to be on your feet or ascend a flight of stairs that continual drain that is sapping from your system all your former elasticity, and driving the bloom from your cheeks that continual strain upon your vital forces that renders you irritablo and fretful— nay all overcome and subdued by persovering use of that marvelous rem edy. Irregularities and obstructions to the working of your system are rnmovby this safe and mild means, while periodical pains, the evistence of which is a sure indication of serious disease that should not be neglected, readily yield to it, and if its use be kept up for a rea sonable length of time, the special cause of tbe pains is permanently removed. Further light on these subjects may be obtained from "The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser," in which I have devoted a large space to the consideration ef all forms of diseases peculiar to your sex. This work will be sent, Dost-paid, to any addaess on receipt of $1.50. My favorite Prescription is sold by druggists.
