A HUGE TUMBLE.

TIi© Old Iron Works of & Co «'ave In—The Bull ing- Totsu Wrcck-No One Killed or Injnrert.

From the Indianapolis Evening News. About 10 o'clock this forenoon a dull, heavy, crashing sound, Jollowed by clouds of dust, rose from near the corner of Maryland and Penusylvania streets.and a News reporter, one among the first upon the sceue, found that the immense brick building, formerly used by Hausjh & Co., was a mass of rums. Jn the fall the descending walls had torn down a smoke-house in the rear, belonging to tho Mart L. Hare block, and hud demolished about twentythree feet front oi the new business block recently erected by Joseph A. Moore & Bro., on the corner of the streets mentioned above. The old works wero four stories high, and occupied neaily one hundred feet frontage on Pennsylvania street, and after abandonment

by

liaugh it Co., were

sold to Joseph A. Moore it Bro., who immediately commenced tho labor of transformation into a block for business purposes. For severai weeks, under the Superiutendoncy of Major rainier, the work of excavating the cellar room has been in progress, and in safe succession the foundations of the tho front, side, rear and middle walls wore underpinned, leaving the north wall yet to be operated upon. The dirt was dug away save a space of two feet at the top, sloping to about six feefe at the bottom, and tho recent cold snap is supposed to have filled this with frost, which dissolving under the mild temperature ot yesterday and to day, settled tho earth, broke the foundation wall already under, and this brought the whole building to a general wreck. About lifceen workmen were at work underneath the building when the first alarm was given, and there was ample opportunity for every one to escape. Joseph G. Steman was tho foreman in charge, and so slowly did the walls settle that after the escape of the laborers to tho street ho secured braces and made an effort to put them in position. The north wall was the first to crumble, being the same wall that gave so much trouble last summer the rear followed next, and then the street and alley fronts—all being cumbered to the ground, in much less time after fairly started, than it takes to tell the circumstance. Part of the wall went crashing down by the office window of Messrs. Johnson Lilly, doing business on Maryland street, and for a second the danger to them seemed imminent. The walls, in falling, left the old chimney untouched. The noise and dust raised an alarm of fire, Charley Rich mann pHlling the box under the impression that there was a boiler explosion, and the Department members were on hand with their customary promptness. An immense crowd gathered, the report circulating quite freely that several workmen were buried under the debris, and the fire authorities had difficulty in systematizing their work. It was finally authoritavely learned that no one wa3 beneath the ruins, and the Fire Chief therelore confined the labors of his men to teardown the endangered walls of the smoke house and new block.

In an interview with Jos. A. Moore ife Bro. they estimate the loss not to exceed §10,000, which by the nature of tho accident is not covered by insurance. The work of rebuilding will commence at once. A short talk was also had with Mcjor Palmer, who attributes tho disorder to the sudden freeze and thaw and the fact that the north wall was near a large vault. The under pinning of the other walls had been successfully done, and there remained but this to complete the job. The workmen first noticed the crumbling of sand, and under suggestion attempted to put in braces, not at this time anticipating danger. The first intimation was tho cracking of the window glass, and then carne the cries of the carpenters.who were working on the floors above, and then alarms were given, some say, ten minutes before the block came tumbliug down. The Major is Banguine no one was injured, notwithstanding tho report that a German laborer who re turned for his coat was caught and crushed.
