Special Committee, made the following interesting report: To the Mayor and Common Council:

Gentlemkn:—Vour coinniitteo to whom was referred the mutter ol substituting oil for cas in tho engine houses and city offices, beg leave to respectfully report:

First. The amount paid for gas for the month of December was as follows: Hose reel No. -1, §7,20 steamer N». 1, SS 40 ho«k and ladder No. 5, #19.20 station house. §.70 city ball, £3.20 market house, total §113.20.

Second. Lamps and fixtures will cost about §1.-10 each. Third. Tne estimated cost of oil for each lamp per month is 60 cents.

Fourth. The difference between the cost of oil and gas per month, taking steamer No. 1, where gas is used, and the Fourth stjeet engine house, where oil is used, as samples^ would be §0.40.

Fifth, your committee are of the opinion that tho engine and reel houses should be equipped with lamps as soon as possible. As to the city offices, wo do not think it worth while I to make any change, as the gas bills are now very light, and will decrease as the days grow longer. By making the change above suggested, your committee is satisfied that a saving will be made to the city (taking the gas bills of December as samples) of about $S5 per month. Your committee would therefore recommend the adoption of tne following resolution.

Resolved, By the Common Council of the city of Terre Haute, That the Committee on Gss be, and are hereby instructed to purchase lamps aud fixtures for the engine and reel houses, and station bouse, and have them placed in position as soon as practicable.

C. F. Kodekds, John 6. Heinl, Thomas Gist,

City Attorney Williams reported that no Councilman can receive more than §150 per annum for serving on committees.

Several unimportant reports were read. A report from the City Assessor stated th" valuation of property in the city to be §13,482,270. ORDINANCE IN RELATION TO THE POLICE

I'OKCE OF THE CITY OF TERRE HAUTE. The lollowing ordinnnce was read: "Be it ordained bv the Common Council of the city of Terre Haute,That section 4 of an ordinance entitled 'An Ordinance in Relation to the Police Force of the City of Terre Haute,' apnroved May 21,1SG7, be, and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: "Tho members of the police force, during their hours of service, shall keep strict watch within and throughout their respective beats, observe the couduct of all suspicious peisons, suppress all disturbances, riots and unlawful assemblages, aud arrest and bring before the Mayor of said city any person discovered in the act of violating any of the city ordinances ef said city or penal laws ot the State of Indiana and in all things tho day police force shall be subject and strictly conform to the orders of the Marshal of the city and the night police force shall bo under tho control and strictly conform to the orders of the Chief of Police."

The ordidanco was referred to Judiciary Committee. Two ordinances, one relating to hack drivers and the other to the duties of Market Master, were laid on the table. SEWER FROM POPLAR STREET TO

CHESTNUT.

A resolution was presented by Mr. Smith for a sewer 3 feet deep and 6 inches in diameter from Main to Chestnut street, and one 3 feet in diameter from Poplar to Main, the same to be laid in the canal bed and paid for with bonds issued by the city. After considerable discussion it was referred.
