Ezra Read, would be republished trom the Mail, of that date in the GAZETTE to-day. As is well known the GAZETTE very severely condemned ho anicle, and its anonymous method of publication. Our design in republishing it, was to show the enormity ot the Mail's otfenco. Dr. Read, bow«ver, called at the GAZETTE office laBt evening, and in an interview this morning made a request that the matter be dropped. He is iu no sense a revengeful man and is not inclined to prosecute the Mail for its outrageous aiid uncalled for attack upon him. In rue spirit of christian charity, wor.thy of emulation, he is not .uisposed to press his advantag against •either the author or publisher of the libellous article, as could be done most «-fj3ec£ually in this community, by republishing it, as the GAZETTE, in his itiiereet, proposed to do. This morning about seven o'clock, just before the train on the L. C. cV W. road was to have gone north, tto forward frucks on the engine was thrown oil by the sudden breaking ol the axle. The train was delayed an hour on account of the mishap.
The Chicago and Northwestern Ra*|" road Company owns, 10,000 freight cars and are still" keeping a large ,orce building new ones.

as indicated in the extract re-publish ed in the paper, some days ago, from the .Logansport Star, the citizans oi that place are urging the council to repudiate the bonds issued by the dty ot Logansport, to the L. C. & S. W. Road, ou account ot tue violation of the agreement made by this company in not locating the shop3 of the road at that place. If the bonds are repudiated it will bo a heavy blow on the company.

Papers over the country are giving currency to the following item: Col. Thomas A. Scott is not so bad a man after all. By contract the Pennsylvania Railroad Company was to receive from Philadelphia §05,000 for rebuilding the Mat ket street bridge. Col. Scott has just written a letter to Mayor Stokley, saying that the bridge cost the company only §62,4_05_, and returning the unexpended §2,595.
Mr. S. B, Morrison has oeeti reinstated to his old po&ition as conductor. IN UNIFORM.
All the Midland conductors are having new suits of uniform made at Bannister's. The goods are of tno finest material, and made in the best style, each suit costing §80. They are made by order of the receiver of the road, and will be presented to tno conductors. When they have wron out the conductors will have to provido themselves with the second suit. Tho costume is military in design,the goods being navy blue.

L. Goodman, Jr., fc Co., this morning, got a letter out of the postofiice addressed to S. Goodman & Co., Port Huron, Michigan. How it could ever have been sent to Terre Haute when the envelope was plainly addressed to Port Huron, is a mystery.
Mr. Preston B. Carr, one of the oldest citizens of Vigo county, has been lviug very sick at his house below Strawberry Hill, since Christmas day.
Miss Conie Wright, daughter of D. H. Wright, gives a birthday party tomorrow,
Capt. Barrack did not get out South with his boat as expected. Owing to the freezing cold weather and the exposed condition of the boat, the horse and cow placed on board and consigned to Samuel Prevo, had to be removed. Captain Barrack will build a cabin onto the steamer, though not quite so large a one as was formerly on her.
Mr. Thos. Kinsor reports lour inches of ice on the pond at the \anclalia gravel pit. He expected to commence cutting ice to-day.
Alec. McMinimy, runner for the St. Clair house, was assaulted at tho Union Depot last night by Wm. Johnson, runner for the National house. Johnson used a lantern as a weapon of offense and inflicted several ugly cuts and scratches on McMinimy's face. Both were arraigned before the Mayor this morning on a charge of fighting. Johnson was fined ?7-20 and McM:nimy discharged.
Messrs Peale and Riddle haye uriiyed safe at Augusta. Mr. James M, Allen, ol Oilman, 11)., who has been visiting his brother, Mr. S. S. Allon, for several days, returned home yesterday. He left his daughter here to attend school.
SOME of the waiter girls who left Terre Haute and are now working for Mr. Will Hawkins, proprietor of the Sherman House at Indianapolis, write home to their friends, the girls iu the National House that the house is doing an excellent business. Mr. Hawkins has the best wishes of all Terre Hauteans for his success.
AT the sale of stalls for the market House this morning, only vegetable dealers were on baud. No butchers were present. Councilman Haley, therefore, determined to postpone the letting. It will come off on Wednesday of next week without fail.
A HORSE belonging to Mr. Perdue, the ice roan, fell down on Main street, this morning, but was uninjured.

BODY FOUND.
Ciucinn&ti, Feb. 4 —The body of a woman was fouud yesterday hanging to the limb of a small sapling on the shore of .Little Miami River, Milford, Ohio, it had evidently floated down from some point up the river and caught on the tree. No clue to her name could be found.
A PENNSYLVANIA MURDER TRIAL. Pottsville, Feb. 4. During a recent trial of Loyle at Mauch Chunk for murder, one uf the prisoners now ia jail there for being connected with che murder, made a full confession of the murder of a special police offi" cer Yost, who was shot and kiiled at Tamangua, on the night of the 5th of January, 1S75. A reward of several thousand dollars was oli'ered for the murderer by the town and county. The confession having implicated five men Corroll, Duffy, Boyle, Roarty and McGhen. These men were arrested near Tarnagua to-day. Much excitement prevails at Tarnagua,

San Francisco, Feb. 4 ^-Robert S. Martinferst, marine reporter for the New York Herald, and organizer of the shipping news bureau, San Francisco, died in thia city Wednesday evening, aged 64 years. A discount ou silver no of 8 to 5 per cent causes much incoovenience for a meeting of merchants yesterday to discuss the question. A committee is appointed to report Saturday. Cincinnati, Feb. 4.—Some significance is attached by many pers=ons to the statement in he affidavit ex-post-master, Green of Daytop Ohio, who is on trial here before of Judge Sweeny for misappropriation of Government money that Hon. Robert C. Schenck will be here in April to testify in his [Greens] case. It is understood to mean that Green has positive information that Minister Schenck will be recalled by that time. /.

The Lewistown, Me., Journal relates the following: "One of our physicaos, a few days since, dined with a friend. The physician said to his host that the town had been unusually healthy. Mr. Steiger, the well-known German book-seller, has issued "The Popular Health Almanac," which is intended to wage war upon similar publications of patent-medicine venders. An effort is being made to have it distributed gratuitously throughout the country. It exposes the dangerous nature of certaiu popular patent-medicine compounds.
