TEIiRE HATTTE HORTICUJLAL SOCIETY.

A. LAND SCAPE OF SNOW AM totiSNTIjY FALLING SNOW STOltM.

Had Roads.

All this (lid not deter a good number of ladies and gentlemen from turning out to take part in the monthly meeting of the Society at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jane Modesitt yesterday. The Barbours from both sides of the river, Mrs. Warner from Gcsben, Gilberts, Pegg, and Soule from Fruit Avenue, Mrs. Col. Thompsou aud Sir Harry from Spring Hill, Haney, Schultzer aud Hulmaus.irom their rural garden, with goodly Dumber from tho city swelled the number in attendance to about thirty.

Monthly reports were first in the order of busiuess. Mr. Haney read a very interesting report on small fruits, aud giving information of a good prospect for a yield the coming season hereafter killed.

Mr, O. Jones made an elaborate, instructive, and encourageing report •on the larger fruits.

Mr. Schuttz, on vegaiables and hot beds. The President, H. D. Scott, gave report on meteoralogy for December and January. Failing to take down items iu this report, can only give avarage temperature for mornings, which was 36 for December, and :»3 for January, above zero. The mildest in weather, remembered by the oldest inhabitant.

Mrs. J. O, Jones gave one of her practical, useful, and pungentkssons on cooking, not forgetting the good dish of cracked wheat.

The Treasurer, J. O. Jones, read his report, which proved the society in good credit with the press of the city, and able to pay all demauds.

ESSAYS.

Mr, Haney gave a sharp, critical aud well digested essay inths science of Horticulture.

Mrs. Soule, charmed, amused, and instructed the ladies of the society, in the bigh art of true house keeping, aud the gentleman applauded most .heartily.

Mr Pegg took the society back to the past in history, and contrasted :ancient art, architecture, inventions and mechanical pkiil, as it existed when Babylon, Nineveh, Rome, and

Athens were in their glory and still father back to the buildiug of the oreat Pyramids in Egypt with the uresent. "The past and Present."

A little discussion arose upou. port, and the question was raised as to whether or not, some of the immense blocks and columns of stone, as found in many of those ancient structures were not composed or cre ated by artificial means. There can be no doubt however, on that point, as the quarries still exist at no great distance from which they were quar* ried and shaped by human hands.

Not far from the greatest of the Pyramids in Egypt, is the famous quarry of Touset, from which the stone was taken to build it and Herodotus states that the larger one was by Cheops, who femployed 100,000 men at a time, changing every three months for fresh laborers. To facitate the exportation of stone, a Causeway was built 3,000 ft. long, 60 ft. wide and and 48 ft. high, which required 10 years to buid it. It required a still further time of 20 years to build the

Pyramid. The date of these structures was about 2,500 years before Christ.

Marks upon stone leave but little doubt that large and ponderous der» neks were used to handle aud hoist them to their places. Jacob must have seen them, when he went down to Egypt to buy corn. Moses saw them, and the Hebrew children may have danced and sung their songs under their shadows.

If anything occured between the reading of this last essay and (he call to the famous dinner of turkoy, beef, pork and Deans, salad, vegetables, sauces, hot coffee, cakes and et ceteras this reporter does not remember it. The city editor of the Express was there and he doubtless will remember i,he dinner, if he forgets everything elpe. He was taken into another smaller room, where the distance for the waiters to travel was inuch shortened in order to save time. He came out full of kindness and good will to the societv, and in the fullness of his heart proposed to publish their monthly proceedings in pamphlet form. It was a sharp after dinner thought. beans, when it is considered that the Express had a special permit to be there and responded heartily.

The discussion of the question, "Ought we, and oan we settle our national dilliculties arcl questions by arbitration had not proceeded far, when on account of the lateness of the hour, it was by motion, postponed to tho next meeting in Marcb. There was a lively "repartee" about having notices published in tho city papers at cost. The Society will accept of bids from the press, as to which will pay the most for honest reports.

The Rockville Patriot ividently not aware that Samuel Downey is up, and about able to chop his r.ora-aud-a-half of wood a day, and to digest two quarts of beans a day if his stomach was shot a little out of fix, says that Charles Harrington,!in jail at Terre Haute for the murder of Samuel Downey, a Sugar Creek farmer, has made a"full confession of the crime. Tne real cause of the crime was an old feud between the families as far back as 1830. A correspondent says that Harrington looks like a fool, but ono would hardly, on first sight, call him a hardened villain.

Convicted Criminals.

When those frisky whisky fellows, T. J. Kabb, of Princeton Dennis Ki ley, of Patoka C. Conconour. of Patoka, and John Jaques reached Princeton, where they will be confined in jail lor six and eight months, they received a hearty and most enthusiastic reception from the citizens. The idiocy of thus paying tribute to convicted criminals is extremely apparent.

Miss Sarah Glick is this year teacher in room No. 5 in the Frst Ward school. To say that she was only a fey years since that she was a pupil in that same room, with Miss Meilej' [that was] as her teacher, is a great compliment. Her honors are well earned. Miss Glick went from 5 to 6 and 7 and through the High School, graduating in 1872. The class of '72 are proud of

Return of the Jeffersonvillo party. The Indianapolis Evening News says: Deputy U. S. Marshall Bigelowcnd party have returned from their Jetfersonville trip with the whisky convicts, all of whom were landed afc their destination after a long aud tedious ride occasioned by the high waters delaying trains. The 'irregulars" kept up their spirits well until they were incarcerated within the prison wlals, when they began to realize their situatcon in its fullest extent, and were completely prostrated in contemplation of it. It was indeed an effecting sight to witness the mortification tt^ were subjected to in having their heads shaven and clothes changed, and after that transformation none of the dep« uties could bear to look in upon them, not even excepting the Journal reporter, who accompanied them in the capacity of a guard. The prison authorities spared McGriff the humiliation of having his head shaven on accouut of his being subject to neuralgia, and it is quite improbable that he will turvive his sentence of two years.

Siruck it Rich.

Laramie City, Wyoming Ty., Feb. News from the Centennial mine has just been received. The spur of the lode which yielded the ore running over $2,3000 ounces of gold to the ton continues to yield, the $10,003 rock being 500 times richer than the ore first milled. The drift is withi -a few feetof the side of the fool vein, which is supposed to be equally rich at the same level.

Exchange: The editor who was told that his last article was as clear as mud, promptly replied. "Well, that covers tha ground, anyhow."

Bleeding from Lungs, Catarrh, Rronchitis, Consumption. A Wonderful Cure.

JtocnESTER, N. Y., Jan. 13th, 1874. R. V. Pierce, L. D., Buffalo, N. Y.: DEAR SIR—I

suffered from catarrh in

an aggrevated form for about twelve years, and for several years from bronchial trouble. Tried many doctors aud things with no lasting benefit. In May, '72, becoming nearly worn out with excessive editorial labors on a paper in New York City, I was attacked with bronchitis in a severe form, suffering almost a total loss of voice. I returned home here, but had been home only two weeks when I was completely prostrated with hemorrhage lrom the lun^s, having four severe bleeding shells within two weeks, and first three inside of nine days. In September lollowinc, I improved sufficiently to be able to be about, though in a very feeble state. My bronchial trouble remained, and the catarrh was tenfold worse than before. Every effort for relief seemed fruitless. I seemed to be losing ground daily. I continued in this feeble state, raising blood almost daily until about the first of Marcb, '73, when I became so bad as to be entirely confined to tho bouse. A

friend suggested your rotnedies. But 1 WHS extremely skeptical that they would do me good, as I had lost all heart in remedies, and began to look upon medicine and doctors with disgust. However, I obtained one of your circulars, and read it carefully, lrom which I came to the conclusion that vou understood your business, at least. I finally obtained a quautity of Dr! Sage's Catarrh Remedy, your Golden Medical Discovery and Pellets, and commenced their vieorous use according to directions. To my surprise I aoon began to improve. The Discov-

ery and Pellets, in a short time, brought out a severe eruption, which continued several weeks. I felt much better, my appetite improved, ana I gained in strength and flesh. In threo months every vestige of the Catarrh was gone, the Bronchitis had nearly disappeared, had no Cough whatever, and I had entrely ceased to raise blood and, contrary to tho expectation of some of my frionds, tho cure has romainod permanent.

I

have had no

more .Hemorrhages from the Lungs, and am entirely free from Catarrh, from which I had suffered so much, and so long. The debt of gratitude I owe for the blessing I have received at your hands, know no bounds.

I

am

thoroughly sutistided, from my experience. that your medicines will master tho worst forms of that odious disease Catarrh, as well as Throat aud Lung Diseases. I have recommended them to very many, and shall ever speak in their praise.

Gratefully yours, Wjr. H. SPENCER.
