PROSPECT FOB ANEW COMPANY.
An Enterprise That Should ha Encouraged.
The oppression of an overtaxed commuuity for illuminating gas has long been felt in this city and loud and deep have been the complaints not to say.curses that have rended the air. It is our pleasure now to Btate that the people themselves have something to say in this matter. Responsible parties have proposed to add another to our great manufactory interests in this city by erecting works for the inanafacture of coke and out of which they are enabled to furnish a very superior quality of gas at a greatly reduced rate to the consumers of this city. This opens up a fair and open field for competition which is generally conceded to be the life of trade. In this case the new works have by agreement, offered to flurnish as good gas in all respects, as that now in use at the reduced prico of *2.50 per cubic foot
From this standard they further 'agree to meet all competitors for the patronage of consumers provided that the oombined branches of their business will yield an existance at the low rate of one dollar per cubic foot. Such iB the proposition made by the parties and the citizens gladly accept and freely subscribe to it. All concession heretofore having been obstinately &enied by the Torre Haute
Gas Light Company, it is no wonder that an offer for relief from ex orbitant rates should be eagerly em braced, and true it is that the principle consumers in this city is already pledg ed to sustain an honorable compel! tion. We are fortunately not bound to any exclusive privileges as Has gen 4 erally been supposed, and the option I** is with the people to accept or reject all offers to furnish gas, as well as every other nsccaaity or want, and now that ,i'Jt- this great essential element in com
mon use has been placed within the reach of all, it is truly to be hoped that consumers generally will embrace the offer now extended to forever re lieve themselves from arbitrary rates In future. The

Auditor of State.
The time is drawing near for the meeting of our State convention to nominate candidates for State offices. No more important office is there to be filled, than tbat of Auditor of State. Under his supervision and revision, must all, or nearly all of the financial bills, accounts and exchanges of the State pass, be paid or rejected.
The man selected for it should be one well tried in practical business experience and integrity. .Such a man is found in the person of B. F. Marten, Esq., of Brazil, Clay county, so I see it announced in the Clay County Enterprise, of the 20th inst. I too, believe that Mr. Maston is as woll qualified to discharge the duties of that office as any man in the Slate who has not already had experience in that particular business. lie is known to many of the leading basiness men and bankers of Terre Haute, and it is believed by the writer, that should he be put in nomination he would receive not only their votes, but their hearty recommendation for the suffrages and support of the Republican party throughout the State. CITIZEN.
Obitnaij.
The remains of Mrs. Catherine Parsell, whose death, last week, was noticed at the time, were taken to Liberty, Ind., for interment. She had been a resident at one time of that place, and there at present lives her aged mother aad naanA" friends. She was a native of Ireland, and by her fearly death, for she was only in the 42d year of her life, carries sorrow to the home of her husband and the three children she leaves. She was a great favorite in the circle of her acquaintance, and her loss will be greatly felt.
"HEAL THYSELF."
The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser, a book of about 900 pages, illustrated with over 250 engravings and colored plates, and sold at the exceedingly low price of $1.50, tells you how to cure Catarrh, Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, or Indigestion, Sick, Bilious and other Headaches, Scrofula, Bronchial, Throat and Lung Disease, all diseases peculiar to women, and most other chronic as well as acute disorders. It contains important information for the young and old, male and female, single and married, nowhere else to be lound. Men and women, married and single are tempted to ask their family physician thousands of questions on delicate topi' but are deterred irom doing so modesty. This work answerH Just such questions so fully and plainly as to leave no one in doubt. It is sold by agents or sent by mail (post paid) on receipt of price.^ Address the author, It. V. Pierce, M. *D., World's Dispensary, Buffalo, N. Y.
A VALUABLE BOOH. From the Lafayette Dally Courier. Dr. R. "V. Pierce, of Buffalo, distinguished in surgery, and the general profession he honors, has made a valuacontribution to the medical literature of the day, in a comprehensive woi entitled "The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser." While sientific throughout, it is singularly free from technical and stilted terms. It comes right down to the common sense of every-day life. Dr. Pi§rce is a noble specimen of American manhood. He has sprung from the people and, with many sympathies in common with the masses, has sought to render them a substantial service in this the great work of his life*

MALLORY. Tlift East End Coal King.
Lafayette Mallory, city coal contractor, sells his coal cheap from a number of reasons, all plausible and sensible. First, because he is engaged in other business at which he can make a living, and which furnishes his rent free. Second, because he sells such large quantities of the blaci diamond. Third, because he has been in the business along time, and is fully up to the wishes, and fourth, because he believes in small profits and quick sales. Either address him through the postofiice, or leave orders at the corner of 13th and the Vandalla railroad. Orders may also be left with Rive, near the corner ol Fourth and Ohio streets.

It will be sold in either large or small tracts, suitable for colonies. For further particulars address or call on T. J. Forrest.
I have a large lot of farms to rent in Waller and Washington counties either on shares or for moneyed rent, the landlords furnishing teams, seeds, implements, etc., when rent is payable in shares. Also, 100 farm hands can get employment in either of these counties at from $l$to $18 per month, boarded and lodged. The farmers will meet the parties at the depot.

Attention Parents.
Parents should not forget that the time spent by their children in idleness these long winter evenings might be used in gaining a good commercial education. The Terre Haute Commercial College of Messrs. Garvin & Heinly has no superior as a business college', in the country. A night session ol the school is kept running during the winter months. To it their children might just as well as not now be going, and by so doing they Will secure a business education which will be almost invaluable to them in after life.
