KAUT CAUGHT.

A Novel Novelty Press Procedure.

A. Terre Haute Swindlar aptured

From the Fort Madison (Iowe) Democracy Soiue time before Christmas an advertisement appeared in the "Young America," a paper published in New York, and which has quite a number of subscribers among the youth of this city By this "ad," a fellow signing himself Harry Kaut, of Terre Haute, Indiana offered to sell a" Novelty" press for £5 00 Carl Doerr, the eldest son of Commodore Doerr, thought Jre would like to have the Novelty to practice on, and his parents consented to the purchase, deeming it a proper Christmas present. "Carl" thereupon corresponded with Kaut, the result of which was that the press arrived here on Christmas morning, C. O. D., necessitating, of course, the peyinentof the $5 as well as of the express charges, ($3.35.) before delivery. This was all accomplished by the j'outh, who was in high glee over bis Christmas present, but what a change iu a few minutes on opening the box it contained two or three rough pieces of board nailed together, [pres^,] a piece of hack berry stovewood, [the roller,] a piece of gravestone, [lor composing stone] and a few old type, the whole not worth 5 cents. The boy felt bad, of course, he was out $8.25 and a Christmas present beside.

On consultation between Commodore Doerr and Messrs. Frow fc Fov,our expross agents, it was agreed to hold the money long euough so as to notily the police of Terre Haute, in order that the fellow might be nabbed at the time he would call for the money at the express office in tnat city. The express agent at Terre Haute was notified accordingly, and Mr. Doerr wrote also to Geo. W. Shoemaker, theeffieient Chief of Police of that city the result of the whole being that yesterday morning Mr. Doerr received an express package from Mr. Sbewmaker, containing $8 25, the full amount for which his son was out. What was done with the fellow Kant we have not learned, but hope he will be dealt with as he deserves by receiving a few years emplojnrient at the siyne house in Michigan City.

Meanwhile our young people should learn a lesson Iroru this, and not be led estray ly that class of advertisements.

FOOT/ IGHT FLASHES.

Amusement* Past and to Come. MRS. OATES. Mrs. Oates was not at all satisfied with the manner in which she was received ia Terre Haute. It was not alone theslimness of the.andiences which offended the little lady, but the lack ol appreciation on part of those who did gome to see her. She was so disgusted th^t she at first refused to go on with the secone night's performance Mr Allison finally prevailed upon her to play her part, but she cut the piece down to tnree acts, and cut out most of her own scanes. Now Mrs. Oates is well enough in her way, she supplii a certain phase of public amusement, and daes it very well. She is a good vocalist, and a fair actress, but she is not an artist only a clever pepformer. While she is on the stage she never looses sight of her audience for a single instant but keeps her eyes constantly fir.ed unog tfeenalQ mart the effect ef liSF Saj ingS and doings. She speaks her lines as though she thought them a burden, which it were desirable to get rid of as soon as possible, It is not artistic merit which has made fame and wealth for Mrs. Oates, it is simply cuteness.

RICHIXG3 BERNARD'

To-nignt Mrs. Carilino RichingsBernard and company are to appear at the Opera House in the opera of The Rose of Tyrol. The sale of seats i* "already one of the largest which has been made this season, and Mrs. Bernard will no doubt be greeted with an overflowing house.

The following is from an exchange: Itjis an event in Richmond that we may remember among the many amusements which have visited us this season, a genuine English Opera, and unquestionably one of the best combinations that has been brought togeBher, and this opinion is attested bv the^ever growing popularity of the

Mi

singers Mrs. Richings Bernand is so well known as to need no praise from us. We never have heard her In any part, however, which displayed her exquisite yoice to a better advantage. The pretty little opera is well calculated to'bring out both artistic and poetic Situations. The solo, "It was my dearest friend," which Grittly gang to her broken guitar, was the gem of the evening The drunken song was admirably exe cutedby Mr. Holmes. Some of the duetts 'between Frans and Grittley were very charming and rendered iu an admirable manner. Tho make-up of the entire company was very perfec.,.

ANew Way to Play Old Tricks. Officer Stewart and a companion visited the little station of Sanford, on the I. fc St. L. R. R.,yesterday on business, and while there discovered a very queer sort of conspiracy (if one man can get up a conspiracj') to defraud the revenue and evade the license laws. Sanford is on the State line between Indiana and Illinois. A target at one ond of the switch s'ands exactly upon tue line.

A Sweed by the name of Larson keeps a little grog shop on this side of the lino, and evades the liquor law in the following manner: The customer steps over the line into the sucker State, and by pantominic gesture makes known his wants to the saloonist. The latter takes the cigar and marches across the line into our neighboring province, faces about and deposits the liquor in the soverign State of Indiana. The customer then steps across the line and picks up the glass and drains it to the dr§gs. This may be a very cunning trick but there are seaious doubts as to whether or not it would stand the list in a court of law.
