The great pholosopher "J. It is for this he has been laboring and, though the pressure has at times' been too great for any ordinary human being to bear, he haB been upheld by tho con. sciousoess that the whirligig of time which at last sets all 'things right, would in due season vindieato the soundness of his doctrines. For twen-to-two years be has borne upon his brawny shoulders the burden of this great pressure, but now it is all on the people and he walks erect—a giant among the pigmies that he has brought to earth by the mere force of his intellectual power. But there are still some onvious mortals hero and there throughout the land who refuse, with a stubborness that is born of malice and ignorance, to admit the truth and power of his beautiful philosophy.
Misguided mortals! They little dream that they are standing on the brink of a moral Niagara, whose overpowering floods they are defyiug with a madness worse than insanity. If they persist in their opposition they endauger the perpetuity of every inter est the man holds dear, and the philos opher will be compelled to throw the pressure back upon the people and de mand a full recognition of the powers that should have been acknowledged
twenty-two years ago. This "J: N."— modest and unassuming as he is—does not wish to do, but desires to move along bis follow men as though he did not hold a mortgage upon the world, the forecloseure of which would entail upon humanity a chaotic condition

llscantlya company of beef-eaters to Charlston and accidentally struck coal at the depth ol" 500 feet. In noticing the fact the Charleston Plaindealer has little over half column of head lines set up out of every, display and job case in the office. There are just 28 separate head lines, each as large and flaring as the type, wood, and metal in the office would admit of. Thojoke of the matter is th3t all those head lines are placed over a couple of sticks full of treble leaded matter and that Dunbar, editor of the paper is a stockholder in the mine. Wo give the headlines below condensed: Coal! Coal !—Brilliant Success of the
Coal Company—A Six l\ot Vein— Of Bituminous Coal—Unearthed near this City—At a Depth of £00 Feet The People are lipjoicing !—Charleston is the Place—For Manufactories —Coal!—Water Works !—Railroads —Fine Timber !—A Wealthy Agricultural District—Delightful Climate— And Every Possible Advantage— Now is the Time to Invest 1—Hurrah lor Charleston! Within the past few weeks we have mentioned the fact that a coal company had been formed in this city, and that the boring was rapidly progressing, with every indication of success. About noon last Friday a vein of excellent coal was struck, supposed to bo between three and four feet thick. In order to make a thorough test, the hole was reamed and the veiu found to be FULL six FEET THICK, of excellent quality aud of rare brilliancy. As soon as possible additional stock -will bo added and a shaft put in the ground. The mine is on Mat Glassco's land, on the railroad, one mile west of the city. The coal was found in the bottom close to the Cossel Creek, but wa understand the shaft will be sunk on the top of the hill, where it is possible another hola may first be bored. Of all possible things that could have happened for the benefit of our already beautiful and prosperous city, this is the best. Now you will see Charleston come up.
CHRISTIAN COXTRI3UTI0N8.
Extensive Improvements. Some time ago an item appeared in these columns partly descriptive of the neat new seats which have been purchased for tho upper room of the Mulberry stree Christion Church. These seats were made at Richmond, Ind., and aroespecially adapted to lend comfort to the person occupying them* The bottoms are of alternate pieces of walnut and ash and the sides are niceinlaid with panel work. The backs aro elegantly adapted to tho shape of the*avorage spinal column. Owiug to the lateuess of tho season, no decoration ot the walls will be attempted until spiing, but in about two weeks alter the carpets are down tho church will be opened leaving the walla as spotless as tho plasterer left them.
The expense attached to the entire improvements, including dc-corations and stained glass windows, v. ill be i.u tho neighborhood of §5,000. Strange as it may seem, the church is not going in debt for this amount. As soon as the proposition was mado the entire amount wm subscribed, some of tho members, as Mr. Hudnut aud Dr. Jamee Armstrong subscribing $1,000 .ch.
This church is perhaps the only one in town entirely free from debt.

Prospect? for 1 lie Judgeship. From the Brazil Echo. We are glad to see the name of Judge A. B. Carlton, ot Terre Haute, meeting with such universal favor by the Democratic press in connection with the race for Supreme Jndge. WThile it is true Mr. C., is not in our Supreme Judicial District, yet, from long acquaintance, and a knowledge of the sterling ability and spotless character of tho Judge, and knowing the necessity of such men on the Supreme bench, we take especial interest in Mr. C. We republish below a lew comments from some of tho leading Democratic papers in the State, which goes to show how the name of Judge Carltou is proposed for the position.
Here follows tho article in last Saturday's GAZETTE in reference to Judge Carlton and the Judgship and the following notice from the Rockvilie Patriot:
We hear it said that jjjadge A. B. Carlton wiil he a candidate before tho Democratic Slate Convention for Supreme Judge. It is quito generally conceded that there will be some change made in the Supreme Court, and we hope Carlton will get the nomination and bo elected. He is a mau ol spotless integrity, a good lawyer, and should he reach the Supreme bench, would be an honor to it.
General Tom Thumb's Levers. From the Herald, Melbonrne, Australia. Feb 22, 1870.
The hall of the Polytechnic was filled to overflowing yesterday afternoon and evening by enthusiasticaudienceH, and from them the General and his wife recKived a hearty welcome. The Generals lady, from her first appear ance, established herself as a favorite with the audience, who were particularly struck with her ladvlike and fascinating appearance, while Mies Minnie Warren did fearful execution with the hearts of several juveniles, who were courteously allowed the accustomsd kisp, which before time was lib erally lavished on the lair sex by the General himself, who seems tc have handed that portion of the entertain taent to Miss Warren. This show by far the most unique we have eve!-
had in Melbourne, and no doubt cm be entertained of its success from rirst to last.

Tlinl oI'iH«(riSTnt IndlauaiialisTcs •terrtay.
Indianpolis, Jau. 13. John W. Bingham was the principal witness, oxamiued in the McGriff case to-day, He testified to having made arrangements with McGriff for ^shipping crooked whisky similar to that of oilier grades, aud the employers pay ing him twenty dollars per month for his services. The witness was c^uaiuted with Partridge, a storekeeper at Patoba, but had no knowledge as to whether he was in the clique had no particular arrangement with my brother as to corrupting any Government officials, the names of whom were B. P. Brashear, John T. Hogaus, J. K. Hill, Col. Simouson, Msj. Phillips, Lewis Monford, McGriff, Soyc'e •, Ebermein and Miller. These officials wera paid liberally for their services, and iu addition to which, Messrs. Marsh and Pringle, railroad agents, were included iu our ring. Tbe witnesididnot remember ever having conversed with Ebermein in which he (the witness) had said he could steal enough away from McGriff without taking him into the conspiracy. The Government here announced that they would rest the case with this witness, after which the defence called several witnesses who testified to the general good character of the defendaat. The evidence was then closed and argument commenced by Col. Trussler for the Government.

The People's Common Sonse Medical Adviser, a book of about 900 pages, illustrated with over 250 engravings and colored plates, and sold at the .exceedingly low price of ?1.50, tells you how to cure Catarrh, Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, or Indigestion, Sick, Bilious and other Headaches,. Scrofula, Bronchial, Throat and Lung Disease, all diseases peculiar to women, and most other chronic as well as acute disorders. It contains important information for the young and old, male and female, single and married, nowhere else to be found. Men and women, married and single are tempted to ask their famil}' physician thousands of questions on delicate topics, but are deterred from doing so by their modesty. This work answers just such questions so fully and plainly as to leave no one in doubt. It is sold by agents or sent by mail (post paid) on receipt of price. Address the author, R. v. Pierce, M. D., World's Dispensary, Buffalo, N. Y.
A VALUABLE BOOK. From the Latayett3 Daily Courier. Dr. R. Y. Pierce, of Buffalo, distinguished in surgery, and the general profession he honors, has made a valuacontribution to the medical literature of the day, in a comprehensive woik entitled "The People's Common" Sense Medical Adviser." While sientific throughout, it is singularly froe from technical and stilted terms. It comes right down to tbo common sense of every-day life. Dr. Pierce is a noble specimen of American manhood. He has sprung from the people and, with many sympathies in common with the masses,"has sought to render them a substantial service in thi3 the great work of his life*
MALLORY,
Tlifi East End Oeal King. Lafayette Mallory, city coal contractor, sells his coal cheap from a number of reasons, all plausible and sensible. First, because he is enga ged iu other business at which he can make a living, aud which furnishes his rent free. Secotid, because he sells such large quantities of the blacjc diamond. Third, because he has been in the business along time, aud is fully up to the wishes, and fourth, because he believes in small profits and quick sales. Either address him through the postoffice, or leave orders at the corner of 13th and the Vandalia railroad. Orders may also be left with Kive, uear the ner ol Fourth and Ohio streets.
