LONG POINT.
SOSiETHISft LIKE AN ATTEMPT TO REPEAT THE TRAGEDY,
Enacted There Before.
Another report from ug Point indicates a recent attempt to rob sn express car there. Some men ai St. Louis who seemed to be looking at the engine purely front curiosity, asked Engineer Cruz3n where he expected to take water beyond Effingham. Without thinking he said at Long Point. As it happened his water gave out at Big Muddy, west of Long Point and he filled up there instead. As the train went rushing past Long Point he noticed one or two fires in the woods, and two or three men standing behind a wagon and was surprised to hear the gong over his head strike once. As two strikes means "stop" on that road, he kept on_ In fire minutes afterward another stroke sounded, and shortly afterward a third, but none in close enough succession to indicate a stop. He then slackened up to learn the cause, bnt all the train men denied^ that they had pulled the rope. He thinks that his interrogators at St. Louis did it when they saw that he did not intend to stop, but ignorance of the signals foiled their designs.
THE night school in '.be north end is getting to be a nuisance. Some of the boys, during ihe past few nights, have spit tobacco juice in the ink-wells, and put tobacco in the pencil boxes in the seats. This is very disagreeable to the scholars who attend the day school.
Tho above item in last evening's paper was ill advised, and should net have appeared. The only two instances yet known of anything wrong being done by the pupils of the night school, was the breaking of one rule sometime ago, and the spitting in one pencil box by one boy a night or two since. The plural number should not be used in speaking of these things as the instances are so few. The school is in charge of Mr. Ward, and although lie has several of the "hardest nuts" in town to contend with, he is having good success with the school.

The following new rules as to stopover tickets to take effect Jan. 1, 1876) have been sent out on the Yandalia line: Tho rules heretofore in effect on this line with reference to issue by conductors ot stop-over tickets, are hereby so modified so as to limit the use of such stop-over tickets to 10 days from date of issue and but one stop-over will be issued. A VAX.UAIir,E BOOK. From the Lafayette Daily Courier. Dr. R. V. Pierce, of Buffalo, distinguished in surgery, and th« general profession he honors, has made a valuacontribution to the medical literature of the day, in a comprehensive woik entitled "The People's Common Sense Medical Adviser." While sientific throughout, it is singularly free from lecfcnical and 3tilted terms. It comes right down to the common sense of every-day lire. Dr. Pierce is a noble specimen of American manhood. He has sprung from the people and, with many sympathies in common with the masses, has sought to render them a substantial service in this the great work of his life.
