KNIGHTS TEMPLAR.
GR\M5 BALL AND BANQUET OF TEPEE HAUTE COMMANDSHY NJJMBER 1C.
At DfiTTling'e Hail Last-Night.
The Knights Templars of Terre Haute Oommandery No. 16, gave a grand ball and banquet at Bowling Hall last evening. On previous occasions the' public demonstrations and entertainments of tliio organization have been so admirably nonducted and been such great successes that the bar9 announcement of an intended ball gave to nil an assurance that the event of the season was about to come.
Dowling Hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion with festooning^ flags, crossed Sir Knights' swords on the window sills, and cedar-wreathed emblems of the Terre Haute Lodge and others of sister cities. Toute'a full string band famished the music for the dancers. The entertainment began with grand march and then followed ih swift and delightful succession .dance after dance, in a eucccssicn of qnadril.les, polkas, waltzes, mazurkas ot id onine genus.
Great care was taken in the sale of the tickets, and the company gathered was as select as that which will be. found at a "large party in the most exclusive parlors. It served also to keep the numbers present within bounds, and at no time was there that crash and jam which would have made happy a dancer of Tilly Slowboy's character, whose impression was that jrushing into the thickest of a crowd and jostling everybody was the only correct method of footing it. .Many ladies were exquisitely dressed and the lighj shone down on a merry array oi fair women and brave—but the Gay GAZETTEER must net speak of himself.
Scuuder shone lefulgent in the' banquet hall. He has made in his day and generation many an eloquent appeal to the affections of Terre Hautens. but never one more touching or tender than last night. If he had been Grant, and had ask 6d for a third term, last evening after the supper, he would have gotten it by acclamation frtJpa his enthusiastic worshipers.
A feature of the entertainment was the presence of several visiting Sir Knights, from sister Commandaries in other places. The Sir Knights of Terre Haute were dressed in uniform and presented, so to speak, a scrumptious appearance.
£YLINiER
AND HUMAN HEADS
At I.es8r°r-Beads on the Vandalia Kond, Near Plalnllelo—Insijrataneons Death.
Yesterday msining as the limited mail train was distancing the sun towards the western horizon, a most distressing accident occurred near Plainfield. It seems that a man named Smith, wished to get on the train not knowing that it was the limited mail and never stopped. He stood on the track too long and was violently struck. Strange as it may seem the iron bar on the cow catcher was bent out of shape by the blow, and stranger still the cylinder h0»d of heavy brass where his head struck, was dented in so badly that it has been taken off, and is now in th? shops being straightened. Tho poor man was killed instantly. The horrible .consequences of a collision of that kind with the .cheek of a Terre Haute morning newspaper, gormandizing reportor, is appalling. In such a case, that cylinder head would have been beaten into I pruning hooks, toothpicks or something el3e small the track would have been torn lip for ton miles hack,'and much other damage done, besides pulling up telegraph polos and killing all the grass. There is nothing like cheek.
WHAT Terre Haute wants more than railroads, is some well graded dirt roads, leading lrom the eity. Owing to the efforts of county officials, several ot the main roads are good for from 2 to 4 miles out, but beyond that.' in wet weather the mud is ear deep to an elephant. In Vigo.we have hardly anything to contend with." With a s^il that is principally sandy loam, very few hills to cut down, and w|iat we have, full of gravel, it doss eyince great inactivity that our roads are so bad after the city has been fairly left out of sight. Vigo county is wealthy enough to haye a" number of excellent high graded and graveled roads, and the same ought to bo done at public expense. The Terre Haute merchant who is in all Jbad seasons out off from farmer's trade to the profit of the country dealer, as well as the farmers, themselves, who have these hard roads to travel, are vitally interested, and demand that something be done within the next new years.
THE old people are telling over again that ancient anecdote About Davy Croekett, the pioneer Tennesseean, He was suoh a good shot that finally squirrels dropped dead, off the trees, if he but grinned at them. One day he was out hunting, heavily armed with sardoric smiles. He saw what he thought was a squirrel, perched hlgt) upon an oak tree limb, and at onee fired one of those deadly grins at him. Ij, turned out to be a knot but so powerful was the effect- of that smile, tfeat the bark around that knot began peeling off. The GAZETTE' wishes to suggast that it gras on the occasion of this notable iof tance of casting his pearla before swiaey (sort jo' wasting his fragrance on the desert air) that lie first thought of hii celebrated ma^im: "Be sure you are right, then go ahead." fegg
YKSTEBDY several boys recklessly discharged a pistol on north Sixtn street near, the yandalia Railroad. It missed a gentleman who was passing only a foot, and then struck the watch honse of Mr. Leek.—-[Journal,-'

Amusements. DAVY CHOCK ETT.
The entertainment given last sight by Mr. Frpnk Mayo amply repaid the fair audience which gathered in our thespic temple this backwoods wonder for to see. The. idea septned to prevail that it was on the Captain Jack order the bowie knile and leather belt order of drama, bu,t it yra? wholly dispelled laBt evening. It is a drama full of sentiment. Beneath the garb of the rough hunter shone the integrity and noble spirit of a man such as nature might point out with pride to all the world as part and parcel of her handiwork. Tho scene at the door where Davy with his strong right arm keeps out the hungry, howling W9lves through all the vigils of that dreadful night is intensely realistic. The piece will be repeated to-night and will doubtless receive a crowded house.
BICHINGSBERNARD.
People should remember that the Richings-Bernard Opera Troupe which will bo here on the 15th, is with the exception^of Mrs. Oats, the only company which will visit Terre Haute this season. Both Kellogg and Phil1 ips have.it finally determined not to come. It is our first, last and only chance to see legitimate opera during tho season, and it should be improved.
Personal Paragraphs!
Mr. C. C. Dalton, agent of.the Richings English Opera Company, has very wisely put the price of admission at $1,75. Ho thinks it much more profitable to play to crowded Ijouses at a low prica-of admission, than it would be to play to.empty seats at the exhorbitant prices'which have been the custom to charge for opera. While it re. auires the best musical talent to fender opera in ati acceptable manner, there is no gopti reason why it should cost any more than that employed on the dramatic stage. The GAZETTE predicts that Mrs. Ricliings will reap a rich harvest financially for the wisdom displayed iu making her prices within the reach of the masses. Mrs. R. is a decided favorite in Terre Haute.
Onr esteemed fellow citizen, L. A. Burnett, will address the Republican convention of Bartholomew country,at Columbus, Ind., to-morrow.
Messrs. Philip May, Fred Kickler and others, are organ'zing a German order of Red Men.
Terre Haute Horticultural Society. The GAZETTE has a two column report ol the proceedings of the Horticultural Society yesterday in type, but considering that it may interest more directly our outsido readers who constitute a large part of the GAZETTE'S auditorium to-morrow, it is withheld until then. There was a great deal of business transacted at the society which is of Interest.
THE new Mont Rose Church is being seated and will be dedicated next Sunday week. This church was commenced since Rev. Reed took charge of the Mission. It is located on the corner of College and Sixteenth streets, and was rendered necessary by the fact that thf school house, which they formerly ocoupled.Ayas being too much used by the schools. The property is worth $2,500, and is almost entirely paid for.

THAT MAN CANNOT LIVE
On Bread Alone Is a Scriptural innovation of Remarkable Truth. This being a fact then, Wyatt has the following remarks to make:
During the entire pork season and in fact before any of the slanghter houses commenced to buy he has been a persistant buyer. With all the modern conveniences for rendering lard after the most approved manner, ho is enabled to constantly lay by large stores of the lilly white material which has made him famous with housekeepers.
A bare sight of his meat as it is hangs on the hooks.in his large, well kept shop, presided over by his accommodating sons, is enough to convince an'y epicure oi its extraordinary merit. If you don't believe the statement just look in and be convinced.
