REPORTS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND TREASURER Oi1 iHEji BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND
FROM PRES1DEXT JONES.
Failure of the I/gis'ature to Take Advantage of Chaa»cey Rose's Lih(iv.1 OlTer.
The Board of Trustees of the State Norma] .School have the honor to make their ninth annual report, showing the condition, expenditure and educational work of the institution since the last report. The improvements under contract, consisting of steam heating apparatus and fixtures for supplying the building with wat r, have been completed. When onr report was made one year ago, these additions to the building, together with the indebtedness that had accumulated during tbe preceedint? 3'ears, were estimated to cost $26,711.25. To linquidato this an appropriation was made by the last Legislature of $22.1GS, leaving a balance unpaid cf §4,543.25. The payment of this mast wait an appropriation of the Legislature. Of the §10,000 appropriated by tbo General Assembly lor the completion of the building, £600 has been reserved to meet one-half the estimate for a wood and iron fence, and or the ornament ito 1 of the grounds. The School Trustees of Terre Haute have met one-half the expense of building closets and rep'iir of roof. The appropriation has been judiciously and economically expended. We regret that the means at our disposal will not enable us to seat our excellent audience hall, or to finish alcoves, sholvings, casings, etc., for tbe library, apparatus and cabinet. Wo must await, further appropriation to render useful tlie room so long needed. The highest department is

in meeting a demand long felt 111 cur State for a full preparation of teachers for the High School work. Tbe limited alipropriation for the payment of teachers bas made it necessary for us to employ a limited teaching force, and but little institute work can be undertaken by tbe faculty. The failure of the Legislature to respond to tbegenerons offer of Chauncey Rose to grant $100,000 in aid ofdeservingyoung laeies while attending the institutes, has had so discouraging an efiect that he has changed bis purpose and the institute will now probably fail to receiAre the bequest. It is gratifying to know that the history of our Normal School shows a constant advancement in number, in usefulness and iu commanding the confidence of the best educators of our country.
B. C. Hoima,
President of the Board of Trustees.
THE FINANCIAL REPORT OF JOHN T.
SCOTT,
Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Indiana State Normal School, to July 31, 1875:
Of tbe tuition fund there is a balance in the Treasurer's bands of ?30,8i4.69 of incidental fund, balance in Treasurer's hand, §1,405.GG of building fund, a balance of $9,478.80. There is still due from the eitizens of Terre Haute, $455 50, which will swell the assets to $1,093.65. From August 1, to November 2G,lS75,as follows: Balance in tbe Treasurer's hands of tuition fund, $559 69 of incidental fund, $44-3.29 of building fnnd, $2,324.80 due from city of Terre Haute, $1,001.27 making a net balance in the Treasurer's bands of $,268.52.
The following is the sixth annual report since the organization of the Indiana State Normal School for the year 1875:
The total attendance during the year has been 485 aud more than eighty countiss of the State have been represented. In my last report it was stated that 62 per cent, of tbe entire enrollment came from the farm, and 90 per cent, came from tho industrial class. The statistics of tho year affirm the same fact. Tho object of the advanced course is to qualify young men and women to teach in tho more responsible positions of the public school. The first class iu this course will graduate next June. To carry out tho truo spirit and method of iustruciion in the institution, a few hundred dollars worth of apparatus and material are wanted for use in teaching tho elements of the physical sciences. It has been my duty to call tho attention of the Board to this fact in each of m}' reports. Itaspectlu'ly submitted.
Wm. A. Jones,
President ol' the Faculty.

Old.
From the InllanapDlis Journal. Another old negro woman yesterday lost-hor chance for the CentennUl, by succumbing to tho keen sickle of the reaper who is no respecter of age, color or previous condition of servitude. Her naaio was Aunt Silly Williams, and sho died at tho City Hospital, where sho has been cared for during tbe past two yoars. She came originally from North Carolina, where she was tho slave of a Col. Armstrong, who was killed in that :3tate in one of the skirmishes of tbe Revolutionary War, and as "Aunt Sally" remembered seeing him when she was, as she supposed, about ten or twelve yeais old, her age has been estimated at about 106 years. She was very well khown to the members ol the Ladies ReliW Sociecv and oiher charitable persons, and was quite a local celebrity, not only from this fact, but because sho was the inciting cause •or a little book by Harriet Beecher Stowe, who became acquainted with her in some way. Iu lorui she was very porily, notwithstanding her great age, which usually causes a person to shrivel up, and on this account and because of ner feebleness could move about but little, though she always managed to get to the religious services held in the hospital Sunday. For she was exceedingly pious. She was a pure negro, very black, but haviug a well shaped head, and was the mother of a very large iamily, all the membors of which, so far as she could learn, had died of old age, excepting one son still liviDg in Lexington, Ivy. The active cause of her death was pleuritis, or inflauiation of the membrame surrounding the lungs.
Sho will be bueried liursday afternoon by the ladies of the Third Presby tei ian^Church and other charitable persons. Had she lived a little longer she would have been a valuable contribution to the Centennial.
