THE OLD,
Ring In the New.
This is what has been done in tlie fire department at reel house No. 4. At the meeting of the committee yesterday, Messrs Gist and Haley both insisted that George Yost b9 also discharged from the force. A note was accordingly sent to Chief Malmney to that effect. The following men were then appointed:
Joseph McChosuoy, driver and foreman of the house Thomas Matheney, assisted by Dan Dean and Jack Buckley, pipemen. The force is a good one. Joseph McChesney will mako a capital driver, and as for Dan Dean, he is immense.
Declining Pork.
Yesterday there was a sudden and alarming decline in pork at tho Davis hoi.s? not however, exactly in prices. The annual encroachments of the river, and particularly that of last August, seems to havo undermined the walls to a greater extent than was previously thought, so that when the heavy weighet of a large number of murdered porkers bore down on the west wall, lo! it stood not, for it was built npon the sand.—
The loss will be between §300 and ?5C0. The winter term of tho Terre Haute Commercial Collece began last night. Now is the time for parents to make arrangements to have their children go to this school. During the winter months a night school will be found good for persons at work during the day. No better commercial college exists in the State than this one of Messrs Garvin & Heinly here in our midst. A thorough knowledge of book keeping can be acquired in a few months at this excellent institution. Now is the time to take a scholarship and begin the course.
Fire.
An alarm was sounded at eleven o'clock this morning, from bos 13 at tho corner of Locust and Lafayette streets. Tho occasion of the elarm was the breaking out of afire on the corner of Fifth and Elm. The fire was the result of a defective chimney. It was extinguished before the fireman reached tho spot. The damage will amount to nothing.

the work required in taking care of this city, to go very slow in this removal. They may hear some com plaints from citizens of the system, whose complaints are altogether based on a dislike of the Chief Engineer. No man, be he saint or sinner, can set levels and establish lines all over town without incurring the dislike of a great many people. Some men there are, who are small sculed enough to heartily hate the engineer if he put their sidewalk either up or down a foot, or change the line .of their fence 6 inches, when their common sense ought to teach them that the symmetry of the streets, and tho inexorable rules of mathematics is what demands the change, rather than the engineer.
As to Mr. Jos. Strout, he has been employed on several railroads in the country, and has a aeputation among engineers as a carefnl and rapid man in his profession.
The Council should also l-ecoliect that it takes them but a very few minutes to order an estimate made, which may take tho engineer weeks of patient labor to perform, and that during the season now gone a great deal of this kind of work has been ordered.

Condnctcr Pnt. Mickey Has One •f Thim. It will bo remembered that last Friday afternoon as Conductor Pat Hiokey's freight train No. 5, on the 15. fc. One of the party (there were three) was caught and forced to give the name of the large boy who threw the stone. This fellow has been watched. As near as we can gat at it, bis name is Hollier. I
This afternoon Conductor Hickey telegraphed up for Deputy Cleary to meet him at tho depot.
