subject was "Second-hand Truths.". It was attentively-listened to by a hne audience, and spoken of in the highest terms. Judge Scott is in many respects a most extraordinary man. A "mud sill" by birth', a harness maker by trade, a lawyer by profession, judge by popular choice, a student by taste and inclinations, ,ho will yet, by strength of intellect and force of wUI. make his name familiar in the scientific world as that of a man who can comprehend and'explain and teach, if not as a profound scholar and discoverer. ft will not be creditable to Terre Haute if she shall be the last to appreciate his talents.

DENIZENS OF OUR STATE CAPITAL KEJOICE ON THE MORN OF OUR HUN

DREDTH YEAR.

The Royal Family at Washington Receive I he Conrilers and the Common Herd.

Indianapolis, Jan. 1.—The Centennial year was ushered in at twelve o'clock, midnight, by the noisest demonstration possible to make. At a given signal one hundred strokes were sounded from the fire department, followed by a peal, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," from the chimes of Christ's Church. This was followed by the firing of one hundred guns, screecbiug of steam whistles, shooting of pistols and fire-crackers, and other demonstrations of joy. At 10 o'clock a meeting was held at the Academy of Music, at which Mayor Caven presioed. After prayer by Il^v. E. Bradley, rector of Christ's Church, Governor Hendricks was introduced, and be addressed the assembly, briefly referrieg to the progress which the country had made during the last century, the population of which had grown from 3,000,000 to 40,000,000. He characterized the emigrant, who had contributed so largely to these shores, as one of enterprise, couragei and intelligence which had given prominence to character, and swept from colonial lines until it had made ocross to the Pacific shore, and now American judgment governs from coast to coast, and American ideas and American sentiment predominate in every section. Two ideas were prominently advanced by the Governor, of special importance.

First—That while he would not say the American schools surpassed those of other countries, still the foundation was laid for a system of free schools which, within a quarter of a ceutury, would surpass them. The free schools must be regarded as the foundation of American stability, and the people must consider and treat as a foe, any one who will bring the system into cotroveray, with a view to injuring its efficacy.

Since its birth the country has borne itself proudly and successfully against its enemies, first in the seven years wai with. Washington and its head when it laid the foundation for fnture permanent Government, then in the Fereign War, which is the hardest for any Goverument to sustain, and in .all of these it came out with its constitutions preserved and integrity sustained.

In conclusion he drew an elegant picture of the manner in which American sentiment .was recognized by other Governments, and that this sentiment embodied in the one idea that the Government rests upon the consent ot the governed, would eventually end in every man being free.

This was followed by an address by R. Li. J. Mathews, editor of tae Sentinel: "The centennial is our age," in which he traced its success from the time when :flrst flung in "the breeze, one hundred years, ago, by General Washington, to the present era, whereas, the ensign of mighty nation, it commanded the respect and admiration of a mighty nation.

John Coburn spoke of Indianapolis as it was, it is and as it will be, tracing its progress for fifty-five years, from a wilderness to acity, with a present population of over 100,000.

The exercises were concluded with an address by W. C. Greene, the official centennial agent.

Success is never achieved without merit. A man may mase a poor article and sell it once, and there being 40,000,000 people in the United States, the sale to each one would be enough to make a decent fortune. But an article that holds the field year aiftor year, ana the saleB of which increase regularly and rapidly must have absolute merit.

GOLDEN MEDICAL DISCOVERY. Dr. R. V. Pierce: DEAR SIR: -Twenty years ago I was shipwhecked on the Atlantic Ocean, and the cold and exposure caused a large abscess to form on each leg, which kept continually discharging. I was attended by doctors in Liverpool, Havre, New Orleans, New York, and at the hospital onStaten Island (where the doctors went to take one leg off.) Finally, after spending hundreds of dollars, I -was persuaded to try your "Golden Medical Discovery,"and now, in less than three months after taking the first bottle, I am thankful to say, I am completely cured, and for the first time iu ten years can put my left heel to the ground. I am at home nearly every evening and shall be glad to satisfy any person of the truth of this information. I am sir,
