The fair and festival held by the ladies of the Second Baptist church last evening was a grand affair. The church was beautifully decorated with pictures and evergreen wreaths. At 9 o'clock the house was filled with an eager and expectant crowd, ail fully determined to contribute his or her mite towards making the thing a success.
The house having been called to order, HON. J. s. niSToy, of Indianapolis, was introduced by Rev, Anderson. He made a short bpt very interesting address, Mr. Hinton has the welfare of his race deeply at heart. Ho declared in his speech last night that the three things essential to the advancement of the colored people are, education, morality and union. The possession of tho two former, and an earnest desire to accomplish and maintain the latteri ho looked on as cardinal virtues iu his people.
Tho tnetnbeis of tho sewing circle having completed a quilt for the occasion the same was put up to bo voted for to the most popular lady. Two female members of the A. M. E. Church, and two of the Second Baptist Church were put in nomination. Miss II. A. Brown receiving the highest number of the ballots cast, tho quilt wrs awarded to her. The total amount netted from this was $27.45. From all sources during the evening, §114 25 weie received. The fair coutinues this evening.

SIT AY'S QUINCUPLEXAIJ.
The N. Y. Sunday Mercury,of March 7th says: Probably the fact is not generally understood that Charley Shay's Troupe,at the Grand Central Theater, 585 and 587 Broadway, affords one of the best entertainments in tho city. This was demonstrated by the monster programme of the past week, which presented a large number of leading stars, and Little Lolly, the great Dog Pianist, who played the tunc of Yankee Doodle correct on a piana the most marvelous exhibition of aniuial sagacity ever seen in the country. The houses are crowdod nightly with our best citizens.
THE WALLACE SISTERS.
These three little actresses, such favorites with all classes of people in Terro Haute, are, as usual, getting splendid press notices wherevor they appear. The St. Paul Pioneer Press says:
A very large audience visited the Opera House last evening, to witness tho first performance of the three charming little geniuses, the Wallace Sisters. Miss Jennie is a most excellent actress, possessing real dramatic ability, and she enacted tho double role of the poor, neglected street girl, and the darling daughter of an aristocratic family, iu the most bewUohing and truthful maniier, completely enlisting the sympathies of her auditors. She is pretty, naive, and original, and capable of portraying characters of much greater difficulty. Minnie was yery tine as the noble hearted, but neglected printers' devil, and she showed that she had closely studied the characteristics of the convenient little devils, who are always good and true, and who always turn out just as she did, th.e possessor of a large but long conceded fortune. Maud, who appears as tho wicked," kindhearted. nondescript nearo wench, la said to be qtilte'Iovely, butshe concealed her beauty under a thick coat of lamp-black, and reeled off a string of exaggerated- Ethiopian eccentricities which kept the house in a state of convulsions.
THE Journal, in an argument for a local lecture bureau, attempts to discharge the ability of audi other lecturers as have come here from a distance. It i3 certainly something new to h:ar the lectures of Theodore Tilton, Anna Dickinson, Mrs. Livermore, and Fred Douglass spoken of as "dry and stupid talkers traveling to make money oii their wits, whose ef .forts aro less attractive as a means of ^pending an evening, than a rich book p?r racy magazine."
Homo lecturers are good enough, and considering that we have a few very fine speakers will do well enough but with these exceptions the balance would not draw large enough houseito pay for fuel and gas, and we again repeat that he who attempts to make ,them pay theso items will rue the day.
THE Express of this morning reports that John Sanderlin, on the charge of rape, was yesterday fined one cent and imprisoned one hour in the county fail by the Criminal Court. We are informed that no such case was disposed of at that time. The case was one where the defendant, Ray,had been indicted for stealing a razor, worth about a dollar, and as he bad already been imprisoned about two weeks, the court assessed the nominal finding mentioned. There have been two cases of attempt to
rape
disposed of within the
past three years one tried by a jury with a verdict of nineyears in the State prison and ono on plea of guilty to the court with a penalty of ten years.
C1..VRK COUNTY has had another little fracas, this time of a bloody nature. It seems that two men, Jordon Creesey and a man named Robinson, stopped at the house of Mr. John Peters, and there got into a difficulty with a hired man named Page. Page was shot but not badly hurt, Creesey knocked down, Peters scared to death, and all the female portion of the family rendered insensible through faint ing. .ff
Tnf: turkey market is a very changeable one. Recently a dealer was caught on a warm day with a large quantity of turkeys which he closed out to get rid of at ten cents per pound. Later in the day they were to eleven cents, and he was compelled to buy but was fortunate ecoagh to sU for 12% cents. Some times the market ualue varies 4 or even 5 cents in one short hour.

THE social to-morrow evening at AsbUry Church will, if at all successful, pay oft, entire the church debt of the establishment. The entertainment will be unique and good.
