An Immense Crush at the Grand Ho lelLiat EveniiiK. Indianapolis Journal.
The social reunion and banquet of th« State Teachers' Association last evening at tho Grand Hotel was an Immense success, especially in point of numbers. The parlors, hulls corridors fairly overflowed with teachers and their friends, and a very social time was enjoyed by all present, At 10 o'clock the doors of the diningroom were thrown open and three hundred eat down at the banquet. The three febles were handsomely decqrated with flowers and plants If) the center ofeaph stood a large basket of out flowers, the one on the middle table being of a rustic pattern exquisitely arranged. At short distances stood plants which spread their fragrance through the room to the delight of the senses. The menu embraced oysters in all Styles, cold meats, salads, relishes, oake,* small pastery, creams fruits and nuts, and tea, coffee* and milk. The tables were presided over by Mr. J. M. 01 oott, Chairman of the Committee of
Arrangements, who announoed that the Rev. Lemuel Moas, D. D., Presi dent of the State University, would invoke the divine blessing, after which the"' Chairman rapped the fables to1 order and offered the fol* lowing sentiment: •"$ke Indiana State Teachers'Asso-ciation—twenty-one years old to, night," to which Professor George W. Hqjm, of the State University, re. sponded. He said that the history of the association for the past twen-ty-one pears was. a glorious one.

After the tables had been cleared, Mr. Olcott announced the following sentiments "The Hoosier Slate tweuty-flve years ago." Responded to by Dr. George A. Cinisd, uiaville, Kentucky. "The second State Superintendent of Public Instruction still lives. The days of his usefulness are not yet numbered, nor can the abundance of the fruit of his labors bo estimated." Responded |to by the venerable Caleb B. Mill*, of Crawfordsville.
At this point the hungry hundreds outside of the door clamoring for admission, admonished those at the tables that they would like to enjoy same of the good things provided by mine host Baker, and a hasty adjournment was bad to the parlors. The tables were reset, and at a few minutes before 12, the dining-room was filled the second time. The first relief, in the meantime, was enjoying themselves up stairs, Prof. Bales, of Shelbyville, reading to them a selection from the "Hoosier Schoolmaster." When the second tables were cleared the hour was so late that the programme for the after entertainment could not be carried out.
The occasion was graced by the presence of a large number of prominent citizens, and was a great success in every respect, save in the crush produced by the large number in attendance.
THE Journal pajB the following fitting tribute to Superintendent Haley: In not two towns out of a dozen will be found a street railway track in finer condition than is now that of the Terre Haute ompany. From end to end it is carefully ballasted, straight and smooth. In most cities -the tracks are crooked and irregular. Mr. Haley, the Superintendent, deserves much praise, especially since he caused the improyeinent without extra funds from the capital ?f the company.
DR. RHOADS is a belligerent man when he "gets started." Yesterday afternoon he got into an altercation with Henry Schrader, a cripple, whom he struck severel times, and then because be jerked away from him, he knocked him down. Schrader's only offense was bis assertion that certain baths which Rhoads had recommended to him bad done no good. Rhoads was stationed bv (officers Johnson and Robi nson.—[Express.

its members, more than to any other influence, is due the present magnificent system of the public schools of Indiana. This being the history jof the past, what shall it be of the rus ture, that which will be more pleasant to contemplate? For the teachers I think 1 may say that at the eOd of the next twenty-one years of our existence, we shall expect to see a competent teacher in every schuol district of the Btaie, holding, schotol for six monthain the year. We shall expect at least eleven thousand of the twenty»one thousand teachers shall have experienced the benefits of a normal school training that no child born to-night shall not then be able to read and write that the thirty-six thousand adults in this
