THOSE whisky suits in St. Louis seetn to drag since the President removed Henderson.

Be

prepared to make good resolutions for the coming year. Rjsolve to do good and to be good. Begin the work of reforming yourself by subscribing for the GAZEITK. It will be alight in darkness to your stumbling feet.

BROOKLYNITES are Bible readers and claim familiarity with that little anecdote about Sodom and Gomor* rah, and yet they keep stirring up that Beecher-Tilton business. Some men will fool around a powder house and smoke a pipe. A Brooklynite ia a stranger to fear.

TIIE Pittsburg Post professes a willingness to wagor a million dollars that Hon. Jeremiah Black will be the Democratic candidate for President. This is a mere side bet, a sort of vest pocket affair for the Post. Its proprietors have become able to make such colossal wagers by assiduous attention to fr«e lunch counters.

WITH the lapse of time and the accumulation of more complete evidence upon the subject it appears more plain that the Chicago In ten Ocean committed all but a criminal blunder in its perfidious attack upon Secretary Bristow. Its pretended evidence of his guilty connection with the whisky ring has been discovered to be a flimsy tissue of falsehoods.

A FisiiBACicyearus yet for St.Louis journalism. All the clouds that lowered over the house while in that city seemed to have been in tho deep bosom of the ocean buried. George W., he of tho Democrat, and claimant of the credit for unearthing the whisky frauds, has bought, so it is said, an interest in the Evening Journal of the future Capitol of tho country.

EVANSVILLE, SO to speak, put the big pot in tiie little one in ics enter-tainindut-of^MiialetexF'oster. lie is the only consolation Evansville has since the Courier damaged Wm. Heilman, nnd Secretary Bristow had hislittlo difficulty with the Binghams. It will now be in order for the newspapers of "the pocket" to nominate itssolitary great man for the Presidency.

BOSTON is anxious to have the next National Republican Convention held in its classic precincts. She thinks Faneuil Hall would call up historic recollections. That is undoubtedly true, but whether the Republican party in its preseut shape cares for or can stand recollections of the remote and recent pa9t with the inevitable comparisons, is the question. Comparisons are some times odious.

IF anybody in Terre Haute was in favor of a third term for Grant which, to the credit of our people be it said, no one is, he might lind encouragement in the opinion of the London Times that Grant is ahead for tiie nomination. Tne great trouble with the Loudon Times is that its knowledge of Americaa politics is as limited as its geographical information, and it never was good in geography.

EFFERVESCENT journals of the Republican faith are nctually frothing at the mouth in the excess of their adulation of Grant for the phrase, "Let no guilty man escape," anent the whisky trials in St. Louis. These papers ought to temper their phrases a little. It is one thing to say, "Let no guilty man escape," and very diSerent thing for the same person to shield rascals. When will Bobcock be tried?

IT WILL startle tlie country almost as much as a flash of lightening out of a cloudless sky, to learn of a late declaration of the Indianapolis Journal. It has made open confession of its faith, and given to the same all the publicity its columns can afford. It ha9 openly avowed it9 admiration of our Oliver, and pronounced ill favor of him as a Presidential candinate for the Republicans. Who would have believed that it had eanings that way?

THOSE two bright and peculiar morning stars in the sky of Indiauopolis journalism are slinging mud at each other industriously. If they .were edited both by a set of Heathea Chinesa at deadly war with oach other, it would be impossible for more dirt to be thrown.

Little children, remember the nurture and admonition of the Lord and

jove onenothef: Especially remember that the wetld at large and that little

slice

of It in particular witbih your publications circulate doesent care a continental about your personal understandings.

Ir now appears a9 if the country would get through with the month of December with a much smaller average of business failures thau in previous months. Failures there have been to be sure, but tney have been few in number and for small amounts. Apparently, all the weaker business firms throughout the country have succombed to the pressure of financial embarrassment, and tha houses which are left are 9lrong enough to weather any trouble and come out of the tightest'time3 as sound as the specie dollar, to which the country slowly but surely coming. Prices are being reduced, but the reduction runs through every avenue of trade and in every walk of life, so that it does not hurt any cla3s.

THE Revenue Collection Districts of the country have been consolidated. An estimated annual saving to the Government has been made of $270,000, by a reduction of the disr tricts from 206 to 163. Evansville's importance as a.'whisky center and its proneness to manufacture a convoluted article of that cheerful beverage has been recognized. Evansville retains her personality as the center of a district and keehs her collector. We are glad of this. It would have been a gross blunder on the part of the Government to have removed a collector from Evansville. When we remember the inability of one collector to make more than two out of every five gallons of whisky pay the tax, we marvel much that the Government didn't determine to give Evansville two collectors and a half. It ought to have that number, at the very lowest calculation.

Ktilioatl Matters.

Philadelphia, Dae. 20.—The sale of the Oil Creek and Allegheny Yalloy Railroad, under foreclosure, was made at the Philadelphia Exchange to-day, at noon, for §100,000. It was purchased by a committee for the holder?. The moriV»gas on the road amounted to f2,580,000.

Now York, Dec. 29—Another turbulent meeting of the stockholders of the iViissouri Pacific road was held to-day Mr. George moved the following resolutions: llesolaed, That a 'committee of five stockholders be appointed to investigate the affairs of ahe Missouri Pacific road, and in connoction with a committee of the Board of Directors to arratigs with the Atlantic & Pacific road on tbo arbitration of all differences between said corporations. ltssolved, That said committee consist of- Abrain Bayless, R. L. Cutting, W. H. Mauell, John R. Cecil and Jacob Cromwell. An excited discussion ensued aDd yesterday scenes of disorder were enacted finally Mr, Bowman offered the following as a substitute for Mr. George's resolution:

Resolved. That it is the wisli of the stockholders of the Missouri Pacific Railroad that separate receivers be ap pointed foi*" this'road, and no person soleeted for such receiver who is holder of third mortgage bonds, or who is in anv manner interested in the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, and that at as early day as practicablejthe court be requested to order a new election for a Board of Directors for the Pacific Railroad.

This provoked a great deal of discussion, and disorder became so great that Mayor, Britton, Chairman, said he would be obliged to leave the meeting unless order was preserved A stook vote was finally taken on its substitution, holders voting either per sonally

01*

by proxy, and the result

showed that 29,858 shares were in favor, and 6,351 shares against its adoption. St. Louis county olfered to vote 4.038 shares in its favor through |Mr. Yowman, but they were not accepted. The latter gentleman then moved that the Stockholders Committee b£ requested to confer with the committee from St. Louis in regard to the names of persons to be submitted to Judgo Treat for receivership. This was carried, and the meeting adjournoa. "f-.j Defending America from the Iosolts of the Oerman Press. rr

Louisville, Ky., Dec. 29.—Thomas Walker, recently taken from the State authorities of Gallatin county on a' writ of habeas corpus sued out by the United States Marshal, was tried on said writ before Judge Ballard, this morning, and released from custody. Walker's case is

one among the Owen

county troubles, and shows a very aggravated case ot conflicting authority between State and Government-.insti-tutions. He has been tried and' ac-. qnitted on the charge of shooting Geo. Meffert, in the Federal Courts, arid since indicted for the same offen.Be by the State. What the Froach are Doing. Parts, Deo. 29.—In the assembly the consideration of the press bill, in

__ ~,r -3

detail, was continued. AH clauses relating directly to the press weie adopted Without modification. A long and animated debate followed ou the clauses providing for raising I he State of siege. M. Chellemd La Cous, Radical -Depusy for Bouches du Rhine, urged that the siege be raised throughout the country. The Government, he said, desired fo maintain it in great cities, because they were too strongly Republican. Minister Buffet declared that the Government did hot hope to influence elections, it simply wished to prevent manifestations in great towns, which might disquiet and alarm the whole countiy during elections. The proposal to raise the seige throughout: the country was rejected by a vote of 377 to 829. The Government's proposals to maintain the State of siege in Verseilles and Lyons, were voted

011

sep-

erately for each city aud were carried by large majorities, the continuance of the State seige in Paris being voted by 381 yeas to 273 nays. The Government withdrew a similar proposal in regard to Algiers.

M. Gambetta, on behalf of his friends, declared that although the bill was not desirable, the left would vote for it in order to secure a partial raising of aiege. TJie press bill tisallv passes by nearly a unanimous vote. The assembly then proceeded to discuss the report of the committee on dissolution.
