sylntii ant". Free lEllrtnary,
From a prominent rnorafcsr of the Catholic church ic this city, the entire plan relative to ths sale of Frovldsnce hospital, the management- of which wers so unfortunate as to be compelled to close sometime ago, to the Bishop of the Vino8nnfcS Diocese, has been learned. The State of Indiana is divided into two grand divisions called the Fort Wayne Diocese and the Vineonncs Diocese. To thia latter, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Jvvansville, VinC3nnes, Now Albany, and in fapt all the southern and part of the central part of the State, belong. Jn this district- there are about 350 Catholic orphans. One hundred and foity of these are girls and have b9en kept at Vincenncs The balance are boys, and are kept at
Highland. The asyium at Vincennes having proven too small lo accommodate the increasing numbers, the entire school will be removed to this place.
In the west end of the buildiug will be established A FREE IN1MR3IARY, which will certainly be the means of alleviating the sufferings of many poor and disabled persons in this vicinity, and wtfl be a monument more perpetual than one of bra3s or bronze, to the church that has established it.
The money required to support this largo number of orphans is raised on Christmas day by subscription in all the Catholic churches. With this fund the Bishop undertakes to run the little unfortunates for another year.
ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH
subscribed last Christmas in the ncighborhoop of one hundred dollars. It is a marval to observe how cheaply the children in care of the bishop are supported. They are clothed warmly, fed, and ^educated for TWENTY-FIVB dollars PER YEAR,
EACH.
Any body, who has oither ever visited one of these asylums or ever seen the children playing in theyard know that they are healthy looking and neatly dressed, and yet all of this including their tutorship costs less than fifty

The flail Combination.
The audionco at the Opera House last uigbt was not a largo one, but those who were present onjoyed themselves hugely. Saratoga is an original American corned3", by Bronson Howard, It was first produced at Tho Fifth Avenuo Theater in New York city, several years since, where it enjoyed a splendid run.
The whole play bubbles and sparkles with fun. There is not a serious character in'the whole cast.
L.
Mr. Louis
j»u»ee, who appear
ed as Bob Sickett, mad* a hit in his first scene and was on excellent terms with his audience during the whole evening.. Mr: James is a very graceful and easy actor, although he saws the air a little too much with his hands. In tho scene with Effie Remington in "parlor 73,'' be los^s an opportunity for a very effective bit of acting. When Lawrence Barrett played the same part, he was, in general, the same rolicking, devil-may-care, lady-killing sort of a fellow as the young man whom Mr. James present, ed to our gaza last evening, but he gave out Iho impression that under tho glittering butterfly exterior there dwelt a soul which was capable of real sentiment. In tho sceno with Effio, when he discovers that it is for him she is concerned, and not for any his rivals, Mr. Barrett drops lor a moment his jocular manner and is a real lover but Mr. James doea nothing of the sort. His manner and action when he embraces Efflo in this scene aro just as funny as his meeting with that young lady in Central Park. The programme before us conveys the information that Jack Benedict was represented by Mr, Thomas WhifBn If we mistake not, this same gentlemen appeared inthis city a few weeks since, as Billy Bokus in Lotta's drama of Musette. His name then was C. Winfried Butler. However^ bo his imo, Butler or Whiffin he is a very pleasing actor. He also lost an opportunity to make a big hit, which migh' have been done by introducing the line "that's bully" after his reconciliation with the widow. Most of those present would have recoguized the words and the actor.
Mr. Chippendale was a very con'.ica* Papa Vanderpool, Miss Ada Qillman captivated every person in the house. She' i3 petite and pretty, and a most excellent actress. She is to appeer as Qilberte (FrOn Pron) in]F:OU Frou tt-n ght. The part and the actress, we should say, are well suited to eachother. Our iheater goers will see such a rendition of Fron Frou to-night as they have never seen .before.
If we could think of any thing to criticize we might draw this article out to an indefinito length. But the acting was so uniformly excellent that we cannot speak of it except in terms of highest praise, and praise becomes monotonous, after one has read a -column or two of it. The company Will appear at the matinee this afternoon in "Lod Astray," one of the very
best of French society plays. -night,"Frou Frou,»'a drama which To was the rage for an entire London.

Jfc. Ca!. Thomas, Jewqler, on Fourth Street, ha3 lately made a very pretty trinket for a lady who had been presented with a small gold nugget by a friend, He rolled out the golcl and manufactured it into a beautiful breast pin and placed In it a neat little coral sot. The workmanship on the entire pin is very fine and would do credit to a manufacturing jeweler in a much larger place than Terre Haute. Mr. Thomas is prepared to do all such work now.
Mr. Tyler, the genial and fac-etions foreman at the Davis pork house, is put iii a quandary every Saturday. On d»y but 400 hogs are killed and he saj^ that it strains to the utmost all tho arthemtic he ever learned to supply tho 1,900 boj's who come for bladders.

THE following report of a most ro cherche affair at tho residence of Doctor and Mrs. Pence was crowded out of yesterday's issue:
On Sunday evening Dr. Allen Pence and his estimable lady celebrated the 25th anniversary of their wedding. Tee house had been made very attractive within, both with such artificial additions as come under the skill of the paper hanger and with the unsnrpissed adornment that is only made by fresh, fragrant and beautiful flowers. Mrs. Matilda Fletcher read a very pretty poem written especially tor the occasion. After supper the entire family repaired to the music hall and most of them, particularly Mrs. Pence's sister and brother, Mr. and Mrs. Kissner, beiog musical, a most delightful time was passed. Several valuable presents were made.
On Friday evening, (New Years Eve) the Centenary people will give a social and concert which will be entirely free. There will bo no admission fee chargcd, and no refreshments on which to spend money. The object is fan only. The basement where tho Sunday school holds its _sestloas, has b9en improved in many particulars. There has been a neat new wopl carpet placed upon the floor and, beside, all the old benches have been rnmoved, and pretty caneseited chairs substituted in their stead. The smaller children will be taught in a room by themselves. In tLii entertainment on Friday evening there will be tableaux, music, and many other pleasant things.
THE virus received by all of our Terre Haute physicians, was obtained through Buntin & Armstrong from Fon du Lac, Wisconsin. One of these P'tysiciaus, who is given to perpetratlittle jokes in Latiu on people, has now gotten up another which is bringing in numerous shekels to his pocket. He is miking people happy at $2 a head, now b? vaccinating them with virus which h^ claims to have been the same as that used in vaccinating tht Lord Mayor of London and the Queen of England. The ignorant willingly pay extra for the privilege of being inoculatad with such distinguished virus.

AFTER all thathas baen said and done, Dowling Hall ia the nicest one in town for dances. It is the largest, although it may not look so, and it has many conveniences which are possessed by no other hall in town. The large dining rooms especially set apart for that purpose, and better than all the largo range, always ready, makes tho getting np of supper for such an occasion an easy task. a rA

Newspapers pay sixty cents per thousand in Texas, which certyiuly ought to satisfy anybody.

IIio VaiitlalJnMnelilna Shop* Barely Esenpa Conflagration. Last evening about 7 o'clock a flre brke out in the machine shop of the Vandalia Railroad, which for a time threatened to do great damage, but was finally subdusc} without gfSiit loss. In the southeast corner of the machine shop stood a forgo which was used in making bolts for fasui.ing frogs together. Jt was in the vii-Jnity of this forge that the fire originated. In the center of the building there is a cupalo which has an opening at its top, this formed quite a draft, and tho flames crept up the stairway into the second story, which was used as a store room for patterns and other articles. It was in this room that most of the damage was done. Just how large the loss of the company will be can not yet be determined. A g^eat many of the patterns will be ruined through the action of the water. The fire departmedt was promptly on hand and did effective service, extinguishing the fire in a very short time after their arrival.
