Occasional Corietpoiidenct of the Szui.nel Terre Haute, Dec. 26.—Terro Huuto is a oity ot extremes. It contains the most radical temperance element in the State, and jet is under control of tho bitterest anti-!temperauoe men. Its churchmen are the most enthusiasiicaljy religious people in the world, and there is here a larger proportion of infidels, liberals, free thinkers aud spiritualists than any town in Indiana. Its foreign born voters are iu the majority and have matters pretty much their own way, and its native American voters are beginning to assert their right to a voice in tho control of the city There is more hostility and more devotion to general amusements than in any other town in tho West, All these thoughts are drawn out by the events that have aud aru transpiring. It has been but a short time since a tidal wave of temperance swept over oar city, creating tho most intense excite uient, without closing a saloon or con verting a drunkard. To-day the temperance men, as earnest in feeling as ever, content themselves Willi the hope of what they wiil do, while the aLti's run the town.

MUNHALL'S MEET1NG3.

For weeks past Dr. Munluiil of your olty, has been conducting a series ot religious meetiugs, which have waken ed up the church going people to an interest in the cause of Christ never before felt here, and large numbers are joiuiug the diilorent orthodox churches, but open infidelity, Sabbath breaking and ai: the other sins in the decalogue do not decrease. Tho hostility to general umusemeut shows itself iu an occasional sermon, and the anathemas, not to say maledictions, ol the elect, in Bpite of whicti a company of negro minstrels will draw a house too large for any ball in the city, and balls are more numerous than tbe days, or rasher nights. Among these latter, the largest and flno9t one, given by

TITK BROTHERHOOD OP T,1:C0M0T1YR FIREMEN last night, shows tho attention which .this young order is beginuiug to attract. Dowling Hall w»s crowdedjammed is a better word—with as se•lect an assemblage as ever gathered at a public dance. Nothing occtSnrecl dor

ing tbe entire evening to mar the harmony and eojoyableneas of tho occasion, and tbe presence of a goodly number of railroad musistra'.cs testified their interest in their empjoyps' wel fare. This is the second ball given by this order, both of which were successrul, financially and socially, and its future entertainments are sore to attract large and respectable crowds.

Tbe new market bouse and city hall, jlist finished, was dedicated last nitrbt by a ball, under tbe auspices ot the Improved Order of Red Men.

Out of the conflict or feeling between the foreign end native born citizens, there ha3 sprung a determination to orgn.niz2 something excxusirely Amer* lean, Tbis gives rist to tte

To tho Editor of tha Chicago Times: Milwaukee* Wis., Nov. 2G. I see injyour issue to-day that "MaOd" comes boldly to the front and chains pious her medium, or at least, at» empts to do so but in her attempt," -he launches off and b' comes the champion of other wellknown media urns, aud forgets the subject-matter under consideration, as I certainly said nothing iu my former commu* uication against any other medium I only spoke of the pretended maui» iesiatiotis of the Terre Haute materi* alizer She launches off into the he* roies about what old Spiritualists do, aud do not do. If she (as the signals ure would indicate) is so youug in thi3 spiritual philosophy, would really like to kuow how the became possessed of so much Knowledge in regard to old spiritualists. I would realty like to see and talk with this wonder ot the nineteenth ceutury who after an investigation twenty days withjoue soskcalled medium shespeaks s.O positively of there being no fraud connected with these Terre Haute manifestations. I notice she does uot sav a word in refutation of my charge that the lights were so low that it was impossible to recognize you.- neighbor, and as far as light was concerned to see, It might as well have beeu a rag baby sitting in the cabinet. If Maud will keep on in her investigations, she will find that lik" everything eise, there, i* genuine aud humbug in Spiritualism. It certainly was not, and is not, nay desire to disparage any medium, especially a lady but I saw so many communications in different payers about these Terre Haute spir its, and the very wonderful things they were doing, that I embraced the opportunity, when I had it, of visiting them myself, and after doing so, I found such gross fraud practiseb that I conld not help but speak out. In my conversation with Dr.

Pence during the day, he distinctly stated to me in his loud and positive manner of speaking, that it was positively so, and that the medium never submitted to any more examinations or tomfoolery, but she Was in the hands of a committee that made their own conditions for her, and those that did uot like their way of doing, would have.to stay away, aud I found this arangement fully cairied out when I visited the seance room and I still repeat that the music-box kept up such an intolerable noise that it was in possible for any person to hear what was going on in the cabinet when the doors, were closed. I would inform Maud that I am one of those old Spiritualist that always pay their way, even if I do get a front seat. If Maud would onlv make a few inquiries of any of the

Spiritualists of Chicago, she would tind oil' that this same wonderful materializer of Terre Haute was plainly and fully exposed, some two or threq years since, at Grow's Opera Houee, ou W«st Madison street, aud detected so plainly in the fraud of materializing her own spirits that she did not have a word to say in defense of herself. Again, Miss Maud, vou seem to get so augry at the wri ter that he^ j9 almost prone to s*y mat, instead of ^..ur being young at the bellows, you might be classed among the old Spiritualists, perhaps not ia materalisatlons, but as regards the phenomena.

Then in that case, the writer of this

A yij-

article is led on to the conclusion t'nat you are one of the no*pay kind. You speak of the fine seances given by Bastian. I can only s^y that I hav® known Harry Bastian for years, and always found him to baa good, reliable, and truthful medium, but let any person ask to enter Bastian's cabinet, he will at one answer you, "Certainly if you wish to," and then no in there (as I have done and place your hands »»u his, so you know he does not movetand you will then know for a certainty that these manifestations take place without any assistance from him. The same with the Davenport boys. Maud Lord, Mrs. Andrews, tne Eddies, and and many others whom I could name. But you just try it on with the Terre Haute medium, aud see how soon you will be refused. In conclusion, I can only say that it Maud believes these manifestations to be genuine, she has a perfect rial to her opinions, and I assure her that an old Spiritualist will not find any fault with her, but hope she may be happy in the belief, and advise her to keep on seeking after the truths of Spiritualism, and those that appeal good to her to hold on to them, aud those that are not, cast them aside.
