BISHOP HAVENS
THE
is evidently in
tending to take the lecture field, and Is trying to advertise himself after the heroic method of Theodore Tilton. It is a pity that a hopeful lec* turer has to make an adjective fool of himself before he can draw a crowd in this country. Come on, Bishop, put the price of the tickets low, and everybody will want to see if you are really as big a fool as .you try to prove yourself.
New York Herald sheds hit
ter tears over the reflection that there was no Daily Herald in Rome or Evening Telegram in Jerusalem at the time of Christ's birch, to record this interesting event. A nice mess of it some young Bohemian would have made iu one of the Herald's sensational report.
The world will not weep with the Herald. It will rest content with the apostolic record of the event.
IF Bishop Havens would epeud less time in praying for a third term for Grant, and more that he might keep his hands from picking and stealing and his family if not himself oat of whisky rings, there would be some hope that he might accomplish something for his iriend. A first term in a place—uot Washington— where Bishop Havens by uo great stretch of the imagination might be supposed to be a doorkeeper, ought to exercise him more than a third term iu the Presidency. There is no small danger that our worthy—by 1 which we mean unworthy—President will lose all chance for the former in an unrighteous and fraudulent race after the latter. Is it possible that
Bishop Havens thinks things temporal, are more important than matters eternal.
Secrotar/ Iiristotr aad Crooked Whisky, Of all the absurd canards ever foisted on the American people the most ridiculous is the late attempt of the Chicago Inter-Oceau to im plicate Secretary Bristow iu the whisky frauds and convict him of defrauding the revenue. All over aud through its voluminous mass of pretended testimony on the subject are evidences of crooked truth, of wild assertions which never paid tribute to truth, and of a general rer klessness which ought to get tlie I.*0. into deep water.
It does not take much research to discover the animating cause of the I.-O's animosity to Secretary Bristow. A few brief months ago a leading editorial writer for the InterOcean, and most likely a proprietor in that establishment, was the holder of a Government office in the Revenue Department and under Secretary Bristow. Our redoubtable Secretary, who has done yeoman's service in his brief season of office, to clean out the Augean stables of our Treasury Department, befouled by his predecessors, found the In!erOcean man grossly incompetent, and either conniving at or premittiug frauds to be perpetrated on the revenue in hiB district. He did just what he .ought to have done, aud decapitated the guilty party. At once the Inter«Ocean was wroth. It has been sedulously since nursiug its wrath to keep it warm, and now comes out with this "cock and bull story" about Secretary Bristow be-Ing'a-member of the whisky ring, Whqp% the Lord will destroy, it is said, he first makes mad. What especial connection the Lord has with the Int\eV»0?eMi It is difficult to say,
but it is very evident that the man" agtment of that paper has entirely lost its reason. If Secretary Bristow Is or was r. member of the vrhisky rin?, it is sincerely to be hoped that lie will make ail haste to join the next one, and the next one after that and each successive ring r.a quickly it is formed, and thou proceed to smash them in suxjacftMon uod effectually as he has thh huit owe, the member:-of whicharo cither fugitives upon th frtoo of tho earth, or look out upou the aunit, though the grates of a prison.

Resolved, That tho said commtitteo aro hereby fully authorized and directed to select the churcix-s and ministers to bo convened in mutual council, to tho number heretofore specified by Moulton, and to issuo tho letters missive to a number of churches and ministers to bo named by Mrs. Moultoin, and they aro further directed to appoint tbo in oting of tho said council for the earliest practicable day.
Resolved, That the clerk of this church is hereby instructed to forward a copy of these resolutions immediately, to Mr. and Mrs. Moulton. This was adopted, and tho Rev. Henry Ward Beechtr cll'ercd tho following resolution:
Rosolved, That tho committee of seven appointed to call an advisory council in tho name of this church, are hereby instructed to fix the day for the assembling of that council at one week after tho assembling of the mutual council, in which this church has agreed to unite.
Some discussion was had on the resolution, following whit Mr. Beecber arose and with evident feeling and reluctance at addressing so small a number, said it might seem strange the church should spend so much time in writing letteis to a l*dy. He wished to say in regard to tho matter, that it was done for the purpose of removing from tho church the imputations which have been cast upon it by enemits. People said that they carried on a course which was oppressive to the members. The church has always attempted to act as a household, and even in disciplining the members this had been done. It had uot actorl as. a legislative or executive body. When affection can do no more, the church must do what it can towards properlv disciplining its members, and for this reason Emma C. Moulton had been dropped fiotn the rolls, her rights having been looked upon as just as sacred ua'lhosa of any otjjer person. They knew that the power by which she was being impelled was concealed behind her. They were aware that this was an unscrupulous power and on that had wtitched every opportunity to injure the church. These were the reasons that so much care and attention had been given to the matter.
In re«ard to the advisory council ho desimfto state that the church called it because the time had come when it intended to take matters iu its own hands. The speaker referred at somo length to former councils, and said tbat they had been taught by experience that every opportunity to injure the church would be taken, and that jealously followed up, and they had decided to cl?ar it of the many imputations heaped upon it. They would turn thoir book inside out, and would answer any and all questions that might be put to them by mortal man. Ho declared it a shame tbat the community should have been so annoyed and families injure^ for no justifiable reasons whatever, but because of the ill-felling of these persons. AH tie church wanted was the liberty to pursue its own business, and nothing more. He wanted a Mutual Council on these questions of Mrs. Moulton's, that was not afrnid to meet her iu hor relation to them. This advisory council called by Plymouth church wa3 not intended to be a mere handful. They were going to have one that would make an impression on the minds of the publicbut it could not conirole "the Mutual Council.
During hi3 address, which was very spirited, Beecber was frequently appended."
Tho resolution was adopted unanimously,as was the following offered by Shearman:
Resolved, That the special committee ot seven, heretofore authorized to cill an advisory council, be empowered to amend the letter or missive, by makidg whatever changes they may deem necessary, and by limiting, if they see fit, the scope of questions to the affairs of this church.
A committee of five, composed of tho following was then appointed to call a mutual council: Rev. Edward Beecher, D. D. Rossiter, W. Raymond and T. .7. Tilney.
The meeting then adjourned until next Tuesday evening.

Trenton, N. J-, Dec. 27.—The an* niversary of the battle of Trenton was attended with a good deal of enthusiasm. Notwithstanding it was confined to citizens of Trenton, about 1.000 persons were engaged One military company, and all the others iu companies, were made up from citizens without uniforms, but sup* plied with arms from the State arsenal. nerals Washington, Sullivan, Green and Mercer were all presented also Colonel R*bl and others of the Hessians, or British srmy. The movement. of troops began at eight o'clock, and lighting through the streets between contending armies, reached its height about ten o'clock. The surrender took plaee at Assunpink creek, and was received with cheers.
