The officer tried to blow his whistle, but tbe old thing wouldn't work, and he began-to whoop and yell like a Comanchee Indian on the war path.
His cries brought out the workmen from the nail works and cooper shops, who all joined in the pursuit.

The fugitives were soon overtaken and marched to tbe station house, where they were at first placed in one cell but it was soon afterward thought best to separate them, and accordingly one of them was removed to another cell.
A GAZETTEER visited the men at the the station house this mornining, and througn the courtesy of Mr. Nott, was granted an interview. But nothing could be learned from them. One of them gave the name of John Kern, the other George Smith, but further than this, depenent saith not. The most persistent jumping failed to elicit a particle of information. They are both shrewd fellows and look and talk as though they werecapable of any crime,

An old gentleman by the name of Andrew Jackson, who lives in Vermillion county, had his pocket picked on the Vandalia train, which reaehes this city at 1:40 A. M., from Indianapolis. The
train
was moving out of the depot at Indianapolis, when a large respectable looking man came through the car and
asked
the old jjeutleman it he wished to go to Terre Haute. Receiving an affirmative answer he instructed his victim to pass into the next car. Mr. Jackson picked up his bundles and started for the rear car, followed by the respectable looking gentleman aforesaid. Arrived at the door of the car he was met by two other respectable-looking gentlemen who seemed to.be coming into the car.

A Precions Pair
A brief item appeared in tbe GAZETTE of yesterday, giving an account of an exciting chase after a pair of burglars in Bagdad. The news was received at tne GAZETTEoffice at so late an hour, that a complete account of the affair was out of the question. Yesterday at about noon, Mrs. Thomas Jonnson, who resides on Swan street, between Center and Seventh, returned home from a brief trip up town, and on opening the front door of her house, she discovered two men endeavoring to open a trunk which stood in the hallway. She, very naturally, b3gan to make a great uproar about the matter. Her visitors becoming disgxisted with such treatment left the house at a very rapid gait, breaking open a back door and jumping over a fence into an alley. Mrs. Johnson continued to cry out and some one blew a police whistle, which brought Officer Otterman to the scene of action. He immediately started in pursuit, followed by a goodly crowd of people. He traced the fugitives to Bagdad, where he discovered them? coming out of a cornfield, near the residence of Mr, Sparks. He accosted them and remarked that they seemed to be on a walk. One of them iniormed the officer that it was none of his business whether they were on a walk or not, and having said this much, picked up his heels and flew, followed by his comrade, the officer and the crowd. The burglars and the officer soon left the crowd far behind. Away they went, over fields and fences. At first the theives gained a lltte, but soon lost their advantage. Finally they came to a hedge through which they were unable to pass, and were compelled to describe a right angle in their course. This gave the officer another advantage, and he possessing superior speed and endurance finally overhauled them. One of them, howeuer, broke away and drew a pistol, which he fired at the officer. Otterman started again in pursuit and returned the fire bnt was armed with a very poor weapon, with which he failed to do any Wsecntion. The fellow fired again, the ball this time passing so near the officer's ear as to cause deafness lor some time.
The three crowded upon him for an instant and then left him. He passed en into the Tear car and took a seat. He soon afterwards discovered that his pocket-book was gone, but it was too late to accomplish anything. The robbers had escaped. The amount lost was
