The following was presented: TERRE HAUTE, Dec

16,1375.

To the Board of Commissioners of Vigo county, Indiana: I aereoy resign iny ftppointment as phisician for the poor of Harrison town*hip H. H. CALDWEI/L.

The following order WM passed: Whereas, on the 16th day of March, 1875, at our March term, Dr. H. H. Caldwell was by order of the Board of Commissioners of Vigo county, appointed physician of the poor of Harrison -township: and, whereas, at the time of said appointment Dr. John B. Link presented to said Board a proposition in writing to the effect that in case, of dissatisfaction on tho part of the Board with the manner that said Caldwell should discharge his duties, the said

Link would perform the duties of said offices at the same rates, to-wit, for the aum ot |1,000 per. year, which proposition is opte'ed on

Chicago and other suspected points, aud suggested to the Secretary that special agent Brooks, who had been oh duty with me for about five years, would be the very best man for that purpose of whom I had knowledge. Einally the Sec* retary suggested that I had better see tho President, as he had taken great interest iu this matter. I theretore went directly to tho White House saw Gen. Babcock, with whom, at ih .t time, I had ecarcely speaking acquaintance, and told him I wanted to see you that I had been ordered to report for duty at St. Louis oil (he 15:h iiist., and I desired to see you before goiug. lie replied that you were engaged with Senators and members of the Congress, but that if 1 would call in au hour I could have an interview with you. I called at the time named, and General

Babcock took in my card, and I was admitted at once, when I made the same earue statement to you that I had to the Secretary, and made the same suggestion that I had made to him about sending a suitable pereon or persons without knowledge o. either officers or distillers, so that they might be detected in the very act of fr&lul and their manner of stealing,

cord in the commissioner's record, I that the transfer of supervUfrft as volume 9, page 596, and whereas it the ordered would result in a little or DO date last aforesaid it was by thei Board good, and said that you woiiljj 8U3ordered that the Bald proposition of peod (he order on that daV.' A SUPERVISOR WHO KX0n.SALL ABOUT EVERYTHING.

II3 Takes the Load L'pjn Hh Own Shoulders.

Indianapolis, Dec. 1C There was nothing done iu the crooked whisky cases, in the U. N. Court to-day.

Washington, Dec 10.— Supervisor Tuttou has addressed the foUowiiig letter to President Grant:

To His Excellency, U. S. Grairt, President uf the U. S: Sir—I observe that Senator Henderson in the trial case of the U.S., vs. Avery, if his speech be correctly reported, charges General Babcock, your private Secretary, with having some connection with tiie St. TjDUis whisky rings, and in their interest having improperly influenced you to revoko be order of the Secretary of ihe Treasury, transferring sufe.vision, dated January 27t!i, 1875. As I have crtTfoied the credit of having influenced you to revoke that order, I leel it is my duty now to assume tho responsibility, and receive whatever odium, if any, attaches thereto, and with this in view, I beg leave to remind yon of facts as they occur to me. Ou, or about, the last day of January, 1875, I Received a letter from Commissioner Douglas enclosing the secretary ord oi January 27th, transferring me to the St. Louis District, and diiecting me to report there for duty on the 15th of February. I went to Washington on the night of February 3rd, saw Commissioner Douglass oil the morning of the 4th, and asked him how long I was expected to remain at St. Louis, to which he replied a year—six months at least. Mr. Douglass stated that thess transfers originated aud were ordered by the .Secretary, and that I had better see him. I then wont directly to Secretary Bristow and had quite a lengthy interview with him. I. made substantially the same statement to him that if it was proposed to keep me at St. Louis six mouths or a year I would be compelled to tender my resignation, as could not take my family with me, and would not leave them six months for the sake of the office. Besides which, I had some property aud otherjpewonal interests that could not be neglected for that length of time. The honorable Secretary finally agreed that I should go, with the understanding that I was at liberty to return on April 1st, this making my absence about six weeks. To this I assented, but at the same tima stated that I should uot be able to accomplish auy good that if any extensive frauds which he feared, was being perpetated there and at other points by distillers, with the knowledge and (aid of local officeVs, they would cover it so deep that I should uot be able to discover it and that the fact of these transfers of supervisors and revenue agents having been published, giving the parties full notice for two or three weeks that there were to be such changes, would give ample time to the persons so interested, to so completely cover their fraudulent transactions as to render .it almost imposibie to trace them. I respectfully suggested that in my opinionjit would be much better to send some competent, discreet person, who would not be known, aud whose movements would be entirely seoret, to see what was going on, and in this way the parties could b«* caught in the act of defrauding, and sufficient evidence be obtaiued on which to make seizures, and thereby get other proofs of fraud and urged that this plan should be adopted not only at St. Louis, but at

and their

associations and combinations fully discovered, acd that then if the department had not confidence in the local officers, a temporary transfer of the supervisors couid ho made for the purpose of making seizures and vroDerly working up cases. You listened to me attentively and finally said that the move you thought about the subject, the ignore you were convinced

Babcock had an opportunity to speak to you on the subject, as he was not present at the time, and I am now quite certain that you arrived at thia conclusion during our interview, am confident therefore, that G'eu. Babcock could not have influenced you in revoking the order referred to, and what I said to you on the subject was, in my judgment, for the best interests of revenue service, and the results in St, Louis, Chicago and Milwaukee fully justi* fles your actiou in the matter. I have felt it was due, both to you and Gen. Babcock, to make this statement of facts to be used as you deem proper in view of the charges made from time to time in the papers, and this especially in the speech of exSenator Henderson above referred to.

I have the honor to be very respectfully your obedient servant, ALEX.

AMERICAN GENIUS.

bloody aud Sankey.

The great revivalists, Messrs. Moody and Saivkov, who electrified staid old England with their eloquence and enthusiasm, are fair samples of American genius. Springing from anions the common people, their sympathies are alive to thn wants of the whole people, aud herein lies the secret of their success. Those who seek to be popular must study and be familiar with the wants of the masses, and. prove loyaj thereto. To this fact we may trace the grand success in Dusinets, as well as in religions undertkings, wbich many Americans linve achieved. Strikingly illustrative ol these suggestions is that reat establishment located at Buff alo, N. Y., and known as the "World's Dispensary"—a mosrt appropriate name, indeed, for that vast institution, within whose walls are manufactured rem" edies which are in demand in every quarter of the globe, and at which a corps of distinguished physicians and surgeons, under the personal direction of Dr. Pierce, are constantly administering to tho needs of thousands ol sufferers everywhere, and whoso success in tho treatment of all forms of chronic ailments has become so well-known that there is scarcely a hamlet in the land in which his name is not familiar. Its proprietor, savs the Herald and Torchlight, of Detroit, "is a man of the people, writes for them, and to them tenders bis eminent professional services." His advertisements are earnest exhortations. Like the great revival ists, his enthusiasm is multiplied by the unparalleled success ot his enterprise, as well as by the efficacy of his remedies in curing disease. The people believe in bim and bis remedies, because, as the New York Times says, "ho sympathizes with them in all their afflictions, efforts and attainmonts." Hence Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery is to-day more largely employed as a blood and liver medicine, and also as a cough remedy, than any other medical agent in the world. His favorite Prescription, bo does not recommend as a "cure-all" as is often done by compounders of worthless, humbug nostrums, but for all diseases and weaknesses peculiar to women it jhas proved itself so much of a specifio that it now enjoys great popularity and universal confidence. Dr. Pierces PI* asant Purgative Pellets, scarcely larger than mustard seed, have proved so agreeable and reliable as a cathartic that they are rapidly taking the place of the large .nauseuss pills heretofore somuchinuBe while his Compound Extract of Smart-Weed is a favorite remedy for Colic, Cramps, Summercomplaint, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Cholera, and Cholera Morbus, nr.d also

as a

liniment.

Ot Dr Sage's Catarrh Remedy, and Dr. Pierce's Nasal Douche, little need be said, »s they are known everywhere as the greatest specifics for Catarrh and cold in the head, ever given to the public. And besides this large measure of success, Dr. Pierce seems likely to achieve as gieat renown as.an anthor as he lias as a physician. His Common Sense Medical Adviser, a book of about 900 pages, which he sells at the unparalleled low price of fl 50, has alreadv been sold to the extent of exhausting two editions, amounting to forty thousand copies. The secret of Dr. Pierce's success, as well as that of the great revivalists, and scores of other Americans, who by their genius have advanced step by step :V[?'n. scurity to affluence and distinction, consists in treating the people with consideration, sympathy, caudor and honesty. No man who hopes to attain either wealth, or distinction, can auord to deal unfairly with the wor»d, or be indifferent to the wants and bist instincts of humanity.
