THE Opera House should be crowded on the occasion of Furbish's "Two Orphans," Saturday night. Such organi zttions seldom visit Terre Haute.

THE proprietors of the northern rolling mill have just placed in tkeir establishment a large saw for the purpose of sawing iron. This is ths only article of machinery of tho kind in these parts. ______

THE Furbish party has an excellent plan of advertising. They have a large frame containing the photographs of each of the company in vari oils situations in the play ot the Two Orphans. One of these is in the show window of Button A Hamilton.

FIRE.

A ROT? of iEigM Stafclas Bamed ia the North End. This morning about 10Ja o'clock the alarm of fire waB sounded. It was caused by the burning of a row of stables, belonging to S. S. Earley, and adjomiu&the Earley block on North Third street,. The stables are on one aide of the alley from Eagle to Chestnut and between 21 and 31. They had become ignited from sparks issuing out of the cooper shop connected .with the hominy mill, and which ia located just across the alley from the property burned. The fire department was soon on the ground and by their prompt and elicient action prevented a disastrous conflagration. When ths GAZETTEEB arrived at the scone ef the fire, it appeared as though the cooper shop mentioned, the hominy .mill, and the row of tenement houses on Third street, known as the Eariy block, would fall a prey to ihe devouring element. The stables were eight in number and were all burned. They contained coal and wood principally, belonging to the tenants residing on the premises. Mr. Early estimates his loss at $2,000 insured for $1,000 in the Underwriters, Wbarton & Riddle, agents. Hose Co. No. 1, threw the first water. Great credit is due the fire department for their efforts in extinguishing the flames.

The Hibernian Ball.

The ball of the Hibernian Benevolent Society at Dawllng Hall last night, was a perfect success in every way. A 1 irge and nifcrry crowd attended, and all expressed the opinion that the iiibarnians know how to arrange a social affair successfully.

The mem bets of the order were everywhere visible, and were distinguished l'rom the general audience by badges, loaettes, etc. They were very atteutivij to all, and added a great deal to -make the aflair an enjoyable one.

At 12 o'clock suppar was announced, and for a time every thing in the main ball was quiet, nearly every one partaking of the sumptuous fe«st which had been prepared by Bruning.

The music was good, at it generally is, being furnished by Toute. The incing was k-pt up until the "wee small hours." Tiie aflair will long be remembered with pleasure by all who participated.

An additional hundred was raised through the donation made by all the teachers of one day's silary. It is required that all of theso charts, models, exam ination papers fce., be sent to Philadelphia, some time in February, in order that everything be properly classified, and arranged by the 10th of May, when the show will begin.

Wreck on the I* & St. The pssenger train on the I. & St. L. Railroad, due here at 10:28, A. was two hours late yasterday. The delay was caused by engine No. 34. Jos. Ruth, (Short Line Joe.) engineer, leaving the track near Fern, compelling a track to be laid around it before trains could pass. The engine was badly torn up ,aud was taken to Mattoon this morning.

THE northermrolling mill commenced work on the 7th of Jannary, 1875, since which time.they have lost but *3 days. Closing in July for the purpose of making repairs, occupied 20 days, leaving out a loss of three days during the year from actual labor. We. will venture to assert that no other establishment in this section can say as much.

DOWN III TE*SE8EE. A Bad State of Affairs. Nashville, Deo. 15.—Gov. Porter to-day addressed a letter.to a large holder of Tennessee tjpnds in New York, stating that the Jan. interest on the bonds will not be paid. He aays that the publio revenues, as fast as paid into the Treasury, will be applied to the liquidation oi loans, the account of $255,000, contracted in meeting the Jan. interest last year, and to redeeming the outstanding Treasury warrants, which amount to $245,600. The States inability to pay is attributed to the postponement by the Legislature of the payment of takes, and to the hard times. The Governor further says that he has a reason to believe that most of the large holders of these Tennessee bond') wonld be willing to fund at a lower rate of interest if a guarantee will be given that, the interest shall be promptly met in the future. He expresses the opinion that the present rate of interest is lijgher than the people are able-to payj but he suggests ho basis of coniproiiiise.

Philadelphia, Dec. 15—The depot church was again'crowded to-day, at the prayer m°etiug. The subject of Moody's discourse was, "What shall I do to be save d?" He said the devil was always planting doubts in the minds of men. God wants us to believe, taking him at his word. An uncertainty aud doubt is of the devil.

The hymn "Hallelujah," was sung by Mr. Sankey, the congregation joining in the chorus after which silent prayer followed, Moody requested that it be especially for every one in the he use.

After addresses by several gentlemen, and the reading of quite a number ot: requests, the benediction was pronounced.
