Saturday Evening, DPC- 11,1875.

The Kink Benefit.

Mr. Haley wishes lis to answer the carrl in this morning's paper, from T. E, L. relative to the ball which is proposed to give to Mr. Rink's widow. Mr. H. now recollects that ho was spoken to about the Market House Hall, to be used for this purpose, and that he willingly consented to it. No time was set lor the ball. He could not in any event have rented the hall for this purpose, when he had already let it to the Red Men, but two days later, as it would seemingly interfere with the success of both. The entire matter is now set aside because Mr. Hook states that the hall will not be finished until later than the 22(1. The petition which was granted by the Council, gives no dates. The Committee were instructte fill them in.

The Library.

On next Tuesday evening, at 7 o'clock, sharp, there will be a~meeting of the.stockholders of the Library Association, at Paige's store. Since the law'provides that two-thirds of all the stockholders are neceseary to affect an organization, it is extremely important that all the members be present on that occasion, either in person or through written proxy. Should a sufficient number fail to be present, the entire affair may fall flat. Such a consummation, considering Terre Haute's history in such matters, is greatly to be dreaded. .Let every member think that his person may be the one requirpd to make up the twothirds. One vote has elected a President, and may savs this organization.

ONE more source of locals is gone. Newspapers can't say, any more, as formerly, in a mysterious manner, that Mr. Samuel Royse has gone to Kankakee, with a little hit about two, and tickets returning. Mr. Royse has gone, and he has returned, bringing with him his bride, nee Miss Hattie E. Dnrbam. A reception was held yesterday, at the house of Mr. John Royse, south of town. Mr. Royce is one of the most popular gentlemen, as evinced by his overwhelming majorities at the polls, without any wire working on his part, in the county. Thousands of people in the connty will unite with us in wishing for him and his bride the famous toast of Rip Tan Winkle. "May they live long and be 'appy."

Burned to Death.

A little boy, the son of a woman named Stuart, who lives on East Main street, near Thirteenth, was horribly burned yesterday, and died at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Its clothing caught on fire from tlie stove.

THE gentlemen getting up the Rink benefit deserve all credit for disinterested efforts in behalf of a most worthy cause. The benefit should, however, come at a time when there are no other balls immediately following or preceeding. On the evening of the

22d,

the O. U.

A. M. people give their ball, aui two days later occurs the ball of the Red Men. Both of these would interfere seriously with the success of the Rink benefit, and as both had selected their nights previous to the announcement that the Rink benefit wanted that evening, they should not be interfered with. The week between Christmas and New Year's is just the time of all times in the year for the event. Then all will be able to co" operate for its success. Elsewhere will be seen a statement fiomMr. Haley, stating that no night was mentioned in either the petition or the private request to him.

THE Athenaeum is the name of a new social and literary club which is having a nafost flourishing existauoe thus far. Besides reading, (and the society is fortunate in having as a member the best lady reader in town) the club discusses each week some character known to fame and letters. On next Tuesday evening Byron,' eccentric, gifted Byron, will be discussed. It is hoped that the trauscendant luster of his genius will, in the minds of thmembers, cast a mantle over his exo cesses, crimes, follies and obscenity.

ELSEWHERE will be seen the advertisement of the Bickford Automatic Knitter, manufactured, at Brattleboro, Vt. Those who attended the State exposition at Indianapolis last fall will recollect this wonderful little machine. Its celerity, neatness and perfection in workmanship are marvelous. In speed it distances expedition. How many lives spent in wearisome toiling over old-fashioned knittiDg needles will be gladdened by it.

False.

Messrs. McMahan & McDougall, of the east end, wish us to state that the charge in the Journal this morning against Dr. Caldwell, alleging that he was drunk wb€fh he attended that poor boy, Stewart, is untrue. The doctor went to their store and inquired the way to the house, and was at that time perfectly sober.

A CITY newspaper has spoken of the return of Mr. Thiel, the detective, from the penitenttarv. This does very great injustice (wedoubt not unintentional) to a worthy gentleman. Mr. Thiel has never been in the penitentiary.—[Express.

The GAZETTE representative picked up the piece of information referred to whilein conversation with a number of ity officers. If incorrect, we be Mr. Thiel's pardon for the injury we bave done him.

THE Mattoon Amateurs, 60 iu number, who will render the charming Cantata, Ester, next week, comprise some of tho best musicians of Illinois. Of W. H. Stanley, the leader, the Chicago Daily Tribune, of June 13th, 1875, says:

The musical event of this week was Mr. G. Pratt's farewell concert. The programme was mainly composed of selections from his opera of Lucy and Antonio. Mr. Stanley's appearance was virtually the first be has mude in a public concert in this city, and although, as we have said, his number was a most ungratel'ui one, still he devoloped in its execution a quality and compass of voice, and a method ofsiuginp. which were admirable, and which will increase the pleasure of the public, knowing that he intends to make Chicago his future home.
