Bagdad and Montrose.
To the Editors of the Gazette. Thinking it would be of interest to many of youi patrons to hear from the above suburbs of our vast metropolis, I concluded that I would pen a few items for their edification. I desire to have all your readers know the exact bounds of the two environs. Bagdad is all that part of the city south of the Bloomington road, west of the E. & C. Railroad, and. east of Tenth street. Montrose is all that part of the city south ot Oak stroet, east ol the E. fe C. Railroad and west of the city limits. I make this distinction for the reason that the inhabitants of Bagdad become very much incensed if they happen to be placed in Montrose. I shall now proceed to itemize.
Montrose school house has four large rooms and has accommodations for 200 pupils. There are but forty now in attendance, hence you see that no man but a lunatic would say that it is uecessary to build two wings to the house^
The M. E. Church is under roof, and will be ready for plastering this week. The Trustees are in need of all the "material aid" they can get.
The blast furnace has not blown out yet. Some of the workmen consider it very dangerous. It has been in operation beyond the usual time.
The nail mills are not in operation yet. It seems strange to out-siders that so much time should be spent in making repairs from time to titue. Do the nail companies of Wheoling keep their men idle so long
The trains of the E. it C. Railroad still pass through the sacred precincts of Montrose and Bagdad at the rate of lrom 15 to 25 miles an hour. Why does not John Heinl attend to the company?
The railroad crossing on College street. iQ in a yiilainoss condition. let J. O. Glover attend to that

We, the undersigned, attending Mrs. Anna Stewart's seances in Dr. Pence's Hall, After careful and thorough examination of room and cabinet, took our seats directly in front of said cabinet. After witnessing the materialization of seven spirit forms of different sizes and drees, coming out on the platform and manifesting themselves to us, two of us (ladies) whose signatures are herewith attached—one taking Mrs. Stewart by the hand, the other following—led her into an adjoining room, and after a careful examination, found but five artic.es of clothing upon her person, none of which in color or style, wore such as we saw worn by the materialized spirits appearing upon the platform.
Calvin Qobin has laid aside the im- of the materialized spirits, and I have plements of uis trade for the winter, witnessed recognitions between
and is now prepared to waae a war of tals and immortals which were beyond extermination against the kingdom of controversy. One night the spirit daughter of a lady present camp out of the c.ibinot and walked to the side of ths» rostr mas though she was about to step "ff.

Tlie Terre Haute Manifestations.
To the Editor of the Chicago Tribune. Terre Haute, Ind., Noy. 23.—A certain Mr. Allen, who dates himself from remot9 Milwaukee, rises to explain concerning the Terre Haute Spiritual phenomena, and puts in his demurrer as to the genuine character of the manifestations.
He investigated this phenomena for the lengthy period of one evening, and of course he knows all about it.
He therefore announces to the world that the matirealizations are fraudulent, and are produced by Mrs. Stewart herself, who, ne asserts, arrays herself in the different costumes of the sup posed spirits, and enacts the role of each—from the tiny infant to,the burl?, bewhiskerad man, in full male attire.
This wonderful detective makes the additional false statement that the medium is never examined before entering the cabinet. From what obscure sources he derives his information it is difficult to surmise, but in opposition to his Times article of the 19ih ult., I wish to state a few well grounded facts, which I challenge Mr. Allen or any body else to successfully controvert.
For a period of seven months, dur ing the first years of her mediumship in Terre Haute, Mrs. Stewart was nightly subjected to the ordeal of an examination before entering the cabi-" net and after leaving it by a committee of several ladies (sceptics) chosen by the company. She was also, at that time, required to wear a seance costume, composed entirely of colored material—wen to brown calico underwear—so as to make it impossible to suppose that the white dresses worn by some of the spiriis could be found on the medium's person. The examining committee have even brought the clothes ii. which to dress bor from their own wardrobes, so suspicious have they been of the slightest chance for trickery. After this seven months' rial the committee thought it unnecessary to longer subject the medium to such ordeals, but from time to time since then she has allowed herself to be examined by various committees of ladies from the audience, for their more complete satisfaction. Ouco since I have been here, such an investigation took place, by parties (strangers) who voluntarily gavo the following written statement:
J. T. SMITH, H. ALFORB, M. D., MRS. S. B. ALFORD, MRS. S. A. SMITH.
Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 13,1875. Another test condition to which the medium has been subjected is that of being bound by ropes, which are drawn through two holes in the cabinet and fastened on the outside. In order to be sure that the knots could not be slipped they were wound about with twine. But notwithstanding the fact that the medium was tied about ber neck and waist, and secured outside the cabinet, but also that she was habited in brown calico underwear, the materialized company of spirits have walked out on the rostrum in robes of spotless white, and in all the variety of costuming which we sec in this life. During these seven months' examinations a standing offer of five hundred dollars was made by Dr. Pence—one of the committee—for any detection of fraud on the part of the medium, and every facility for investigation was promised to the parties accepting the offer.
It is not true that strangers were excluded from the circle nearest the platform. I, a stranger, occupied a front seat on the first night of my attend a#ce at these seances, and nearly every night during my stay here (which has been over three weeks) the front circle has been occupied by strangers from a distance. I have given up my chair for the accommodation of parties who had only a night or two to stay. The reason why this gentleman was asked to change his position was doubtless on aco unt of other st angers who had a previous claim to the front seats.
Mr. Allfn admits that there is no fraud about the cabinet or seance room. That, being trnf, will be tell us how the medium, under the test conditions specified, could possibly secrete the different costumes required by eight or ton spirits ot all si ins and both sex' s? Whero could she hide away the bonnets, caps, shawls, scarfs, whiteshirts, hats, white dresses.

The mother, in her eagerness, went forward to meet her daughter with open arms. "My rlinti! my darling!" sbo exclaimnd, as the materialized form clasped her about the neck with kisses. Te-rs were streaming down the mother's lace. A son of the lady, who had accompanied her to the hali, now came forward, and thespiritouce more threw her arms about the neck of both mother and broiher, with a'lof the naturalness oflif*. The mother, as it to make assurance doubly sure, turned to the son appealingly. '•Ob!" she said "did you see her? It was Phoebe, wasn't it?" "Yes," he replied, "it was Phoebe, as plain as could be."
On another evening the materialized form of a man stepped out of the cabinet door, and advanced to the front ol the platform. He was taller than the medium, altogether unlike her in features, and wore a long, brown beard, which he stroked several times before coming out. On that night, an old centleman and his daughter were sitting directly in front of the cabinet doors, in the first circle. As the spirit came forward he reached out his hand toward the old gentleman, and said, quite distinctly, and with apparent eagerness: "Do you know me, father?" "My son!" exclaimed the old man, almost simultaneously, as the two clasped bands in greeting.
Several times during my stay here, the spirit, Belle, has brought the medium out on the platform, and two distinct forms have thus been seen at the same time, standing side by side.
Several times, too, they have stood in the open cabinet, each one swinging a door, to prove to the audience that it look three hands to do that Belle, the spirit previously io."eir :d to, has stood on the scales with the medium, and varied their mi ted weight trom one pound to two hundred pounds.
It is all very well for Mr. Allen to say he could easily expose the fraud Talk is cheap, but I challenge him, in the name of the committee, to come forward and make his words good. Otherwise I admonish him to hold his peace.
Let us have the truth, though the heavens fall! M. L. B.
