While Mr. Grant Was busily §ii|4ged in waiting upon a swarm of customers, last Saturday evening, shivering, half starved specimen of humanity poked his head through the door and
took
in the situation at*a glance The lunch table was filled with a bountiful portion of pork and beans, cold ham bo"*f, cheese, salads and other delicacies, and presented an inviting appearance to the hungry vagraut. He quietly slipped into tho room and closed the door after him, Glancing again at Grant to mako suro that he was not noticed, he hurried to the lunch table and proceeded to devour all before him. His general appearance and the greediness with which he attacked tbe eatables, attracted the attention of several bystanders, who watched the disappearance of the pork and beans with much amuaement. Finally some one called lirant's attention to tho lunch fiend. Grant watched him for a few moments and came to the conclusion that this fellow was getting much more than his share of the free blow-out. Accordingly ho approached tho stranger and addressed Lim mildly: "Say, do you expcct to eat all that lunch yoarsell?"
No answer. "I say, do you intend to give anybody else a chance at that lunch?"
Still no answer the hungry devil had no time to waste in argumoat, or planation.
Grant waited a moment for a reply and then pounced upon the voracious vagabond, aud bounced him, unceremoniously out of the house. But the tramp had secured a good, square meal.
AMUSEMENTS.
The Selden Irwin Combination. The Selden Irwin Combination gave two performances at tho Opera House on Saturday afternoon and evening. In the afternoon "Two Orphans" was presented to a very good attendance In the evening "The Big Bonanza" was presented for a second time. The attendance was much better than on the previous evening, and the hearty applause and laughter attested the fact that all weie well pleased. It is probable that ihis company will return for one night next week and present "Damon and Pythias," for the benefit of tho Knights of Pythias of this eity.
COUNCIL BLUFFS gave Miss Kellogg a rousing recaption at her recent concert there. Local pride probably had something to do with it, as it is her home, but Terre Haute is scarcely less so. She has hosts of triends here to whom she is ardently attached, and it will be regarded by her as kindness to be met with a crowded house. Let it be packed to over flowing, and put the Bluff's in the back ground.
OWING to the inclemency of the weather, last Friday evening, Prof. H. Wilson's lecture, at St. Agnes Hall, was not very largely attended. The Professor's friends have induced him to lectnre again at the same place on Thursday evening, Dffc. 9, 1875. We hope tho citizens will turn out en masse, as the Professor is a good speaker and handles his subject well.
THAT terrible storm which passed over Terre Haute on Friday night some time ago, and toro down Early's slaughter house, took a narrow pathway, not over two hundred feet wide, and actually moved within 50 feet of Happy Hollow, without removing a single shingle from a score of rotton roofs in that vicinity.
THE statement recently made in a morning cotemporaiy that A. P. L9e had moved out on east Main street to do business, is incorrect. He has simply gone out there to live but will continue to do business on the corner of Sixth and Main. The Terre Haate eating public would be at a terrible loss where to go if the Lee's moved.
