Monday Evening, Not* 22,1875.

THE by-word—"out of line"—which has been so long in use, is supposed to h&vo reference to crooked whisky.

THE

salutation of one railroad man

to another when trains pass on the E. A C, is, "Have you got any crooked whisky on that train?"

IT is now known why the Reynolds, Shewmaker, Scott bunting party, did not bag any more gatne than they did. It was mixed drinks that hurt lhem— a mixture of creek and river w^ter,

Theodore Tilton.

The New York Times of Oct. lst,lS75, has the following concerning Theodore Tilton's lecture:

Mr. Theodore Tilton delivered a lecture in Brooklyn, last evening, in tho Academy of Music, before an immense audience. As early as one o'clock in the afternoon all the seats had been sold at the box ©flice, and hundreds of persons who applied after that time were disappointed in getting tickets. When the hour for opening the doors had arrived, a large crowd had already gathered in front of tho building, completely blocking up the street. Mr. Tilton was very warmly received, much enthusiasm being manifested, and his lecture was applauded throughout

CATHOLIC PAIR,

LIST EVENING AT HALL.

DO LING'S

Clos'n? Exercises.

A much larger crowd than on either of the other nights of the Catholic ladies' festival, gathered at Dowling Hall, last Saturday everting. Everybody seemed to havo plenty of money, and were disposed to spend freely. Tho voting for the most popular young lady, the prize being a beautiful hat^ donated by Mrs. L. M. Yolger, created much excitement. The votes for the above stood Miss Joe Maloney, 903 Miss Maggie Hogan, 739 Miss Bessie Alexander, 648. The proceeds from this source amounted to $229.

The amount realized on the silver pitcher for the most popular married lady, was §71.30. The following is the vote: Mrs. Barrett, 423 Mrs. Bindley, 282 Mrs. Cronin, S.

The following is a list of the articles raffled, and tbo lucky ticket holders: Pair blankets, Mrs. Ward tin chamber set, James Kelley box of handkerchiefs,C T. Mrs. W. P. O'Connell, bust of Pius

Mrs. Cronin presented Father McEvoy with a photograph of tho late Rev. P. Bede O'Connor.

The following amounts were taken in at the various tables, with several yet to hear from: Fancy table, $560 ice cream table, $75 toy table, $25 Jacob's well, f35 -Supper table, $75. The whole affair was well managed, and the ladies are very jubilant over their success, financially.

IN the card which appears below there were several material errors in figures, and appeared in in our issue on Saturday. It is correct to-day To the Editor of the Gaz&tto:

A communication appeared in your issue with "A" tacked on the end, which contained some gross misstatements that should be corrected. "A" says: "The debt of the city is large enough. It cannot be ascertained how large it is, but it is not less than #400,000: perhaps $500,000." In his assertion that "the city debt is large enough," no doubt all will agree with "A." But this gives him no right to make such glaringly incorrect statements as appear in the above quotation.

He says, "it cannnot be ascertained how large it (the city debt) is. Has he ever gone to the City Clerk's or Treas urer's office to try to ascertain? Their books are always opsn for inspection from which he can ascertain the debt of the city, to a cent in fifteen minutes. Below is a correct statement of the debt, as it stands to-day. Bonds issued to the E. T. H. & C. R. ?100,000 00 Bonds issued to the C. &T. H.

R. 77,000.00 Bonds issued to the Water Works Co 40,000.00 Bonds issued lor Sewer purposes 55,500.00 Loans for general purposes 59,193.73

Total debt $331,693,73 Less cash (belonging to special funds) at intereet in bank 40,231.97 Leaves actual debt after deducting resources. $291,461.76

So much for the correctness ot "A's" statements. J.

A Pair of Loafers.

Last Thursday evening two girls who livo in the family of Mr. Wilson, ou Mulberry street, between Sixth and Seventh, came up town on some errand, and on their return home they were annoyed by a couple of loafers who approached them, and insisted upon forming their acquaintance. One of these iellows, placed his hand on the arm of one of the girls, and inquired where they were going. The young ladies became frightened and ran across Main street, where they saw Officer Downey, to whom they appealed for protection. The ruffians seeing the officer, turned and made all haste in the opposite direction, and before the girls were able to make the facts known, the fellows were out of sight. Seeing that the girls were very much frightened, Officer Downey gallantly cscorted them to their home. It is to be hoped that some of these loafers who spend their time in insulting helpless females, will soon be captured and introduced into Mr. Nott's stone yard.
