A good one is told on George Carico. He was, previous to the trial, thoroughly impressed with the idea that Trader would be hanged. Like a great many other men, ho has a mortal aversion lo performing the task of the hangman, believing that the blood of the executed man will be on his own head, aud that he will never afterwards have any luck. For nameless reasons, luck is a most tremendously important thing with some men. lie had arranged with Mr. Bert Kelley, Prosecuting Attorney, that if the sentence should be States prison, Kelley should go down with him to Jeffersonville and thence to Louisville, where they could have a good time spending Sunday. The day before toe trial bo got to bo very un" easy lest he should have to hang Trader. He went Bert and said, "Kelley. what is the ^_se of raising this racket about Trader? Why don't you argue murder in the second degree? You just go to the jurymen and tell them to send that man to the penitentiary, not to hang him." "No can't do it," replied Kelley, "the man's guilty and I must get hanging for him if possible." "Why, Kelley," responded Carico, persuasively, and thoroughly in earnest, "what in the world is the use of doing that? Don't you see you will cut you rself out of your trip to Louisville?"
No REPORTERS need apply, every body that desires to hear Mr. Howe's lecture at the Opera House Monday evening should attend, as upon request the Gazette will not publish in its issue a full stenographic report. He borrowed a coat from Superintendent Haley and went down in high spirits.
