TUESDAY, JANUARY 28,1873.
^Editorial Notes.
The Express can neither forget nor forgive the Hon. T. A. Hendricks for the silent contempt with which he treated it during the campaign. It sternly endeavors to annihilate him with sarcasm.
Since the visit of Tom Thumb, nothing has "drawn" an Evanaville audience solarge as Robert McWade, in Rip Van Winkle, if we are to believe the Lamasco Journal.
It may not be true that Postmaster General Creswell is conspiring to control the Terre Haute lire alaim telegraph lines, but it is just in his line of business.
Rabbi Browne, of tlie Hebrew Tabernacle, Evansville, resigned, because he couldn't prevail on Mr. Gross, one of the prominent brethern of the Church, to create a sensation by caning him during service. He thought .such neglect Gross iujustice.
A combination of New York and Canadian capitalists will commence the publication tx' an illustrated evening newspaper, in New York, in a fewweeks. It will be called the Graphic,, and it will be printed and illustrated by a new prdeess invented by a Montreal man. The company has immense capital, and experienced aud energetic men at the head oft the enterprise.
The average Indianapolis editor puts in all the time that can be spared from tbe Metropolitan in vigorously 'but vainly searching standard dictionaries for words -of wonderful and frightful dimensions, which are regularlyand recklessly morticed into Sentinel leaders-by the New
York ingraftation of the concern. Stokes, the unfortunate witness"" of Fisk's suicide, became Restless in his little cell at the Tombs, aud they put Foster, the condemned "car hook murderer," in the adjoining chamber to soothe his sensitive nerves to slumber. ii The funny man of the Lamasco

Mt. Vernon p?per asserts tbat it is authorized to deny the reported marriage of Hoberfc Dale Owen. We presume that the spirits started the insane rumor, anyhow maybe it-was the spirit of that little flaxen-haired miss, with whom be flirted in amaranthine boweis while visiting, his aunt during childhood's dreamy period.
A Springfield man had the hardihood ta steal a keg of powder from the coal mine of old Looney Loose. William Orr is his narae, and William ought to plead that he found the powder lying around Xioose, took it in out of the wet to preserve it, and hence didp't steal it, as oharged in the indictment.
George Francis Train wants the Commissioners of Central Park, New York City, to permit him to erect a monument to himself in that favorite fashionable l?88ort of metropolitan modes. Let him have his own way. about it, and be'li want it erected epecifioajiy t° the honop of his modesty. Braesis the proper-ma-teriai for the asonumeot.
Mr, Dooley, the well-known Opera House Book Store man, informs us thai the New York tribune's illustrated snp» plement containing Prof. Tyndall's lecture on "light," has had the widest circulation of any special supplement ever issued from the presses of that mighty Tribune of the people. The publishers claim that they can hardly supply th'e demand, and the constant cry is "more light." This proves two things very conclusively, (1) That the American mind is rapidly becoming more enlightened to an appreciation of science, and (2) that the newspaper is coming to be regarded in its true light as the medium of communication between the teacher and the taught that is to say, newspapers are getting to be appreciated better at three and five cents per copy,'than are lectures at 75 cents and $1 each, and we might add boobs, at from $3.50 to $7.
From Harding's Sunday Herald.
Scene in the State Sentinel Office, Mr. L-fFng-w-1—Mr. Heenan, allow me to introduce Mr. Edwards.
Heenan—Ah! Mr. Ahdwuds, how d'ye do"? Ah! takea s-e-a-t. [The terrible scissors of the Young Hercules continue to industriously "chaw" the exchanges.]
Mr. Edwards—I am glad to meet you, UJsIr. Heenan. I have often heard of you. %-Heenan—Ah y-a-a-s! A great many people o' me. [Furious, activity of thosmskora.]
Mir. Edwards-JjjYes. The improvement in the

Mr. Heenan—Q,tiMe natural, sir. I profess to understand journalism in all its branches, sir.-^jfc,g^adlfeted on the Nooyawk Tribuh& shffllLMr. Campbell, you would relieve mqjfvery much if you would tell some one subordinates in the other room to go' over to the Circle House and bring me a mild sandwich with a very little mus tard. Call again, Mr. ALidwuds. [Resumes the scissors.]
Mr, Edwards—Good evening,Mr. Heenan. [Slams the door palpably in going out.]
Mr. Keenan—Ah, L-fF-ng-well, who is that Ahdwuds? L-ff-ng-weli—A prominent citizen of Terre Haute and Speaker of the House of Represe tati ves.
Heenan—Well, please don't annoy me. I really haven't time to talk to those people. [Exit L-ff-ng-weil, r. e.]

New Way to Collect an Old Bill. Attention was attracted yesterday to an old Italian walking back and forth in front of 439 West Twenty-first street, having two large placards on his person bearing the following inscription: "For sale,George Steversou's, lawyer, 439 West Twenty-first street, carpet bill due since May, 1872 thirty-one dollars and seven-ty-iiw cents, at fifty cents on the dollar. Address H. A. Burn, Station N." Mr. Sieverson caused his arrest. He could not speak a word of English. Henry Adams, who .was present in court, said, he was responsible, -as he thought it was the only method left him to collect a bill due his employers. Justice Ledwith discharged the Italiau and took Mr. Steverson's complaint against Mr. Adams. He was held to bail in tiiree hundred dollars to answer the charge of disorderly conduct, and will also be prosecuted for lihel.
An Underground Battle.
The gage of battle is still the favorite resort of miners. During the Christmas week the men working the Pioche Phenix mine, near Pioche, Nevada, finding that they were breaking into.the Raymoud & Ely mine', immediately contiguous, put up* a barricade'between the mines, at the same time arming themselves with guns. When the men of the "Raymond & Ely mine discovered that the barricade had been erected they*began sending arms down the shafts, and soon afterwards opened fire on the trespassers. For a number of hours the horrid din of war was heard deep in the bowels of the earth, and no mock'fight was it. The skirmish, resulted in the killing outright of one of Phenix men, and wounding several on both side*. An tuiricable adjustment- was then (too late) made of the difficulty, and friend and toe attended the murdered man's body to the grave.
