MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 1873.

CONGRESS meets to-day. Among the various subjects of interest to be discussed and settled, none possess a more absorbing interest to the public at large than the Credit Mobilierscandal. It was broached during the campaign, and met with the rather cavalier if not satisaetory explanation that it was a partisan lie. This lodging, by the majority by which the Radical party swept the country, was an eminently full and complete answer to the charge of speculation and fraud preferred against men high in authority. But the subject has come up again, and this time in Congeess. A committee has been appointed. On it are several men who belonged to the Democratic party, and who are now in opposition to the administration. This committee, before the adjournment, held several meetings and examined a number of witnesses. That examination was unsatisfactory to the country in the one eminent particular, that it was held with closed doors. The Vice President and Vice President elect of the United States, both stand accused of having been guilty of crimes, for smaller ones than which many men occupy cells in our State prisons. The country wants to know about these charges, and to that end, and that there may be no whitewash used in the report, demands that the doors of the committee room be thrown wide open. There is no favored class in this country. Members of Congress are responsible as are others for their actions, and inasmuch as it is a public trust they have violated, to the public and its just indignation must they be amenable.

LAW is a wonderful regulator of society. In his individual capacity as infant, boy, or man, the beneficent arm of the law shelters and protects him. In his collective capacity as citizen of city, State or nation, he rests under the broad tegis of its might. His property it com mences. often ages before his birth, to care for, aud long after his death what with probating aud contesting his will, .if he was rash enough to have or leave any, and manufacturing one for him if he had or did not, it manages to look after everythiug he left. Indeed, property seems t« be a special ward, as it were, of the law, and its proper distribution and management one of the chief sources of solicitude to lawyers. As to his person, however, it has generally been supposed that our statutes and common law, being a human contrivance, commenced £o have power over him only after his birth, aud ceased to retain any jurisdiction over or claim upon him after his death. It has, to be sure, been scrupulous in the exactness with which it has provided for the defrayment of the expenses of the last illness, and for the funeral, but beyoud the mere liquidation of these obligations, has seemed heretofore to care for nothing else. To the courts of Connecticut—that proud little Commonwealth, famous for wooden nutmegs aud blue laws— we are indebted for an enlargement of the powers of the law, stretching far beyond the wildest imaginings of the most sanguine believers in the universality of its application. At New Haven, the other day, a Mr. Brown shuffled off this mortal coil, and departed, it is to be hoped, for a better and brighter land.

The usual manifestations of grief were indulged in by sorrowing relatives.-Tears were shed and sighs heard "which ne'er might be repeated." The sable habiliments of woe were (Jibnned, and such preliminaries for interment as ordering a coffin and advertising death and funeral were promptly and satisfactorily attended to. All went sad as a funeral bell, and within a day it was thought all that was mortal of the late Mr. Brown would sleep with his fathers in the quiet church yard. But the "best laid plans of mice and-men aft gang a glee" as the remains of the lamented Brown, if they "had laid any plans," were destined to discover. Now, Brown, when in t'le flesh, never had, it seems, any well defined religious ponvictions worth speaking of. He had been a politician, and somehow finding the two professions of faith (he was a Radical) inconsistent, had been content to rest his hopes of preferment in the hereafter, by parcelling his relatives around in all the churches. In the hurry and excitement, consequent upon an unexpected and rather hasty departure from this scene of terrestrial wire-pull-ing and eaucussing, he forgot in his last words to utter even a hint as to wh&t disposition should be made of his corpse.

Hereby dependeth a tale. As has been said, Brown's relatives were of divers faiths. Those of his immediate household were, it seems, belieyere in the sanelifying influences of a wake. A wake, ti)»y fletpr{pipe4 to'

pie preparations were made, whereby tiey might become drunk with sorrow. But their sorrowful preparations were hateful to another branch of The tribe of Brown, taught, as they were, to regard a wake as unseemly exhibition of hilaritj'. They determined that there should be no wake. Thus matters stood on the afternoon of the day before the funeral,, and of the very day on the evening of which the invitations had been issued for the wake.

The rival factions were each determined. The "vvakites," if we may so designate those who advocated the having of a wake, were in possession rf the corpse, and had, therefore, those nine points of the law which are supposed always to accompany possession. Uut even this advantage did not deter their opponents from asserting their rights. For a while it seemed as if a pitched battle was likely to occur over the cold car cass of the defunct and lamented ward politician. Bwt wiser councils prevailed. The anti-wakites seeing themselves to be in the minority in point of numbers, and also recognizing the advantage oi position which their antagonists had over them, concluded to withdraw from the field, and assert their rights through that sovereign alleviator, the law.

TKe courts were appealed to, an injunction prayed for and granted, and an officer, with an order from the court, restraining all parties from holding a wake over, or burying the late Brown, until the case was heard and argued before the court, was despatched to the scene of woe. He reached the house while the joy of| the conquerers, at the bloodless and gloiious victory they had gained over their adversaries, was at its height. Not dreaming that the la*w could fiud a precedent for enjoining operations on a corpse, they had felt secure. Now was the "winter of their discontent" come indeed. The Nutmeg Judge had resolved to hear the matter discussed and that was the end of it. The whole Commonwealth of Connecticut stood at his back.

At last accounts, the whole bar of New Haven was discussing at length the theory of injunctions, whether or not they were ancillary proceedings, and if so, what were ancillary proceedings, and if not, why not? The blue laws and history of Connecticut yet remain as topics. And all this time Brown lies in state, "waking" the neighborhood on his own account, bya law of chemistry higher than injunctions, superior to courts and triumphant even over cold weather. Requieseat in pace, Brown. But our point is proved. Law is a wonderful regulator of society.

George Alfred Townsend in Chicago Tribune. THREE CORNERED COMBAT.

Voorhees, Hannegan and Chandler Take a Hand. At great expense I have obtained a complete narrative of the celebrated fight bietween the Hon. Zach. Chandler, of Michigan, and Mr. Hannegan, of Indiana, son of ex-Senator Hannegan, who was Minister to Prussia. It happened in the National Hotel, at mealtime. Zacli. took advantage of the fortuitous concourse of several persons to abuse Voorhees loudly while in his presence. His remarks resounded all over the dining room, such as "Traitor," "Scoundrel," etc., plentifully consorted with oaths. "Dan.," said Hannegau, "I wouldu't stand that foul-mouthed vituperation." "I won't," said Dan, and he waysed over to Chandler aud struck him a backhauded blow which resounded like a whip-crack.

Chandler, who had got up wrong end foremost, immediately struck out at Voorhees, and Mr. Hannegan, interpos frig, remarked: "Gentlemen, this is not the place for personal collision—a diningroom, where you disturb other .people. Think of your positions, and do not disgrace your constituents "Who in h—1 are you?" exclaimed Chandler, and he struck Mr. Hannegan with all his force on the side of his face.

Hannegan was stunned by the blow, which he had not expected, being a peacemaker and not a fighter but he picked up a molasses-pitcher and brought it down on Zach.'s forehead so that he was covered with blood and molasses, which, strange as it may appear, seemed to improve his appearance. He took up the nearest jug he could find to strike Hannegan with it but Hannegon ducked his head, and Zach. struck an entirely harmless person in the abdomen, who forthwith got the cramps and walked out of the dining room on his belly. Hannegau said that he now understood that Zach. meant business so forthwith he took that great patriot by the top-knot, and, pushing his head down towards the floor, dragged him along, planting blows all over his frontispiece, and nearly making an intelligent countenance out of the Senator. Much spent, gasping, and frothing, Zachariah followed his hair across the floor, and several ladies, rushing in, cried: "Oh don't kill that man "No, ladies," said Hannegan "I just want to keep him from injuring me, and, if you will take care of him, I shall let him go immediately."

With this, Hannegan gave Zach. a last shot,'Which effectually finished him, and the Michigan Ajax rolled over on his back, and was wheel-barrowed away by some of the servants.

A Timely Conversion.

On Christmas morning one of the saddest and most appalling incidents occur red at ChristChurch that ha9 been kuown in this city. The morning services had been concluded, and the candidates for confirmation, ten in number, were innumber, were invited to the altar. Of these was Miss Lizzie Spencer, a most estimable young lady, about sixteen years of age, daughter of Captain W. H. Spencer—who was occupying a seat in the middle of the gallery to the right on entering*the church. She came downstairs and moved up the aisle with the others, her young facerevealing the deep f'eriousness which her heart felt. She approached the altar with the others and was confirmed according to the rites of tbe church by Bight Rev. Bishop Eeckwitb* After tbe oQi#rni$t40n Pere*

monies, Miss -Spencer returned to her seat in the irallery, and hid scarcely taken it when her head sank forward on the railing. Those in the vicinity attached no significance to this, imagining that it was merely an act of devotion, wken suddenly the young lady sank from her seat and would have fallen upon the floor, but for the promptness of Dr. W. H. Elliot (next whnse pew she was sitting), who cauuht her. in his arms. Three or four gentlemen immediately approached, and assisted iu carrying her from the church. Considerable interest was occasioned in the congregation, whose attention was aitracted by the commotion iu the gallei*y, but the general inference was that the young lady, overcome by her feelings, had fainted. Alas! such was not the case. The gentlemen who were carrying her almost lifeless form noticed on oing down the stairs that the gas| which now and then shook her frame grew fainter and fainter on reaching the vestibule. "T here life gave way, and the last rosy breath Went in that deep-drawn sigh."

A conveyance was at once procured, and the lifeless form of the young lady was taken to hef father's residence on Liberty street.

The announcement of this sad and

Bishop

But a few months since it was our painful duty to record the death of Mrs. ISpencer, mother of this young lady, who died suddenly at her residence, of heart disease, while playing with her little child. The death ot her daughter wasproduced by the same terrible disease. She has had the care of the little sister since the disease of her mother, and was the mainstay and comfort of her father. He was absent from the city on Wendesday, attending to his duties as p'lot, when the summons of this terrible affliction reached him.

Beckwith alluded to this vis

His remarks touching the uncertainty of life, as illustrated by this sad incident were very impressive, and were deeply felt by the congregation.
