A "Laitghiug Bill" Does Up a Bahimore Theater. A month or two ago an individual, "whose characteristic was bid cacbinnation, made hid appearance in New York, ^ud after electrifying the Gold Room, the Board of Brokers, the theaters and the newspaper men, was immortalized in the columns of the New York paper? as "Laughing Bill." His genial laugh, so infectious that even the stupidest of mortals caught it, was made the theme of the most extravagant description, and the producer of the outburst was minutely drawn. Whether the description tallies or not, either the Laughing Bill or a Laughing Bill put in an appearance at Holliday Street Theater Friday night.
He sat in an "Orcnestra Seat, Left," •dressed in light pants, dark coat, a moustache, and darkish side whiskers, and at •every pun, double en tender, or contretemps, he started a laugh that ran through the house. Even the stupidest joke or most glaring guy was the cue to him to begin a laugh that rung from pit to dome—not an ordinary laugh, but a professional one. Beginning with a chuckle, it ranged all through the gamut to a regular "ha! ha!" that had both wei riment and lungs to give it force.
The audience, stolid as ordinary audiences are, sat staring at the stage, prepared to laugh at the funny situations, but totally unprepared to be set off at the slightest provocation into roars but in spiteof their individual selves, when the leading laugh led off they chimed in uo-lem-volem, and never was heartier tribute paid to attempts at pleasing in old Holliday street. Of course he was execrated by quiet-minded playgoers, but that made no difference. Laugh he would, and laugh he did, filling the theater with the heartiness of the sound, till almost every one joined in, and the audience of the early part of the evening became the source of enjoyment for the latter part. He was from the first an attentive listener to the plays, and during the interludes, the excursions he made to Lusbington increased his interest and added volume to his laugh. He is a genius, whoever he is.
Correspondence of the New York Tribune. A Fatal Residence. I was walking up the street with General Belknap the other day, and we passed the mansion where Seward resided so long, and where Payne stabbed him. "General," said I, "do you remember a reception you gave one night when these four rooms in the second st®ry were all crowded I call it to your mind because, perhaps, you did not know that a whisper ran suddenly around the room that the old house was mighty shaky, and might fail down with the weight of the guests, and that a good many got out." "Yes," said Belknap, "Idid hear about it, and it was a shaky old place. We were particular after that about bringing so many people into it."
Mr. Belknap then said that a distinguished public man had cautioned him about going into that house to live.
Said this man: "Belknap, no man ever lived in that house who did not meet with a death, assassination, or something. Seward's occupation of the place was a series of misfortunes and deaths. When it was a club-house the Sickles murder and a lot of other events of a dark cast took place in it and about it."
The consequence is that Seward's house is given up as a residence, and it is now one of the military offices. General Belkuap has not escaped some of the evil occurrences of the neighborhood, and, although be has spent four years faithfully and quietly here, be has lost his estimable wife, and bis eldest son is seized with a disorder of the lungs, and has had to go to Santa Fe for recuperation.
