the ground that former knavery went unpunished. The people have a right to ask their servants for an explanation of conduct which, to say the least, looks bad. The Commissioners owe such explanation to themselves. Their characters have been seriously assailed. Silence will be construed into an admission ot the truthfulness of the charges. If they are not guilty, what easier than to show the fact? The attack has not been made by irresponsible parties beneath their notice. Niuetynine out of every one hundred men in the county, among those most violeut in their opposition to the Commissioners, would vastly prefer seeing them proved innocent than guilty of fraud. They shall have fair play. They shall be heard. The columns of the GAZETTE are thrown wide open and freely to them, as they shall be to every person whose character is assailed. But the Commissioners must speak, and at once, if they would save their characters from imputations which years of fair dealing will not live down.

What the movement will amount to in Indiana can not be definitely determined just now, but of one thing we are certain, that if like societies are formed throughout the State, composed qf the best and most respectable men and women of the Commonwealth, we may expect to see the ideas of the members supported by a large olass of people. Amohg the other newspaper changes announced, is the longlooked for transfer of the Independent from its present elephantic size to a folded sheet, something like the Christiau Uuion. This has been talked of for a year, and I have seen a specimen copy of the paper made up in this way. The only thiug which interferred to delay the alteration was the fear that advertisers would not be satisfied with it, but this objection is only imaginary, and in other respects every one must rejoice at getting rid of such an unhandy sheet as it has hitherto been. Mr. W. H. Ward is still the editor-in-chief, and there will not be .any change in the conduct of the paper, which has improved vastly of late. The editorial staff still consists of the venerable,
