A Woman Has Her Say.
To the Editor of the N. Y. Tribune: 8IR: la a recent issue of your paper, we poor women have been, once again, most severely handled (in fact, without any gloves whatever,) on the score of fashionable adornments. This time the count in the indictment is—and, by the way, 'tis no new one—a lady's headgear. It seems that one Mr. Demetrius Zezenia, a London merchant of Greek extraction, smarting under heavy losses in the cotton line, brought on, doubtless, by his own stupidity, and, frantic lest his cigars and brandysmashes might thereby be curtailed, decliues to pay his wife's little bill with her hairdresser. The redoubtable man, who, in the article just alluded to, "pitches into" feminine folly in the matter of dress, revels with evident delight among the items of the aforesaid bill. He positively grins on paper as he recounts, with their prices appended, such articles as"Restorative balm, plaits, rouge, curls, bouflons or combs, washes, brushes, pompadours, nets, salts, powders, and floraline." As for that gibe about the garters, we shall not notice that. The low wretch! Women are
roverbially long-suffering at least they been—I shouldn't wonder, though, if this long-suffering was among things that are passing away—but, in any event, we have borne in silence quite long enough, the lashing of masculine tongues and masculine pens on the subject of dress, and it is time we should have our say. "Fair play is a jewel," and, good sir, we want fair play. Railing is not argument, and ridicule is pointless when men either practice in themselves or abet in others the very usages which they deride. In all nations and all ages men, as well as women, have followed the fashions, and for aught we can see, are likely so to do, while time and fashion nhall endure. When, as not unfrequently happens, fashion burlesques humanity, pity the votary or victim (yourself most likely), but don't fancy you will scare anybody from his or her allegiance by your witticisms. Women, forsooth! Pray, Mr. Paragraph-writer, did you ever kuow a man who did not follow the fashion in his dress And if you are acquainted with such a man, would you like to walk arm-in-arm with him up Broadway, at the hour when "people most do congregate," or even to stop and shake hands with him, unless he be well known as a millionaire and an oddity. Again, since we are on personal ground, what manner of lady is it to whom you make your profoundest bow, as you pass her on the street, whom you turn to look^ after, or, catching a glimpse of her ahead, hurry on to join? Ah, sir, you know very well it is the lady who looks "so stylish." Yet, her style is made up of those or such like accessories as were furnished by the Boston dressmaker and the London hairdresser and she knows—and so do you—that it, like the good, wise woman, you are always piping about, she were to lay aside her furbelows and flummeries, her braids and pampadours and curls, the washes and powders too, for that matter, you would— well, you would not hurry after her so her motto is, "Rail on, but follow." Of course it was very naughty in Mrs. Zezenia to get herself up in such a killing manner, only to make herself "respleudently delightful in the eyes of others," that is without reference to her husband but who shall say that she, or rather women of that stamp, have no wish to please their husbands? Most men like to see their wives stylish, that is, if they like their wives, and if men are so unfortunate or such blind admirers of style as to marry women all of whose charms may be summed up in that one word, "style," why, these meii must expect to see these charms laid aside on retiring. St. Joseph Correspondence of St. Louis Globe. Croton Oil for Lemon Sauce.
On Wednesday last a ludicrous accideut happened at one of the hotels here, which, for a number of hours, created a lively sensation among a goodly number of t!he guests and boarders. For dessert, among other things mentioned on the bill of fare, was cabinet pudding, with lemon sauce." Those who partook of the article claim that they were in a few moments thereafter taken suddenly ill with symptoms of having swallowed something that was an enemy to the hitman system. Violent vomiting, and so forth, ensued, and for a few hours those affected were not a little alarmed. A trip across the stormy Atlantic could not have produced a more horrible sickness.
The accident happened by using croton oil iu place of lemon extract, and was brought about in this way, as your correspondent is informed At the hotel in question there was employed a wicked negro, who, uot having the fear of the Lord before his eyeys, was in the practice of helping himself to the lemon extract whenever he felt inclined to flavor himself with that article. The chief cook of the Hotel cunningly devised a plan whereby he hoped to break this wicked negro from the ungodly practice of drinking lemon extract. Emptying out .the extract, he filled the bottle with croson oil and left it in place of the lemon extract. Alas! however, "The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley." About the same time this chief cook himself got on & drunken spree, and the proprietor of the hotel, Ming indignant thereat, at once discharged the inebriate and placed anew cook
to preside over the mysteries of the kitchen. This individual, in his like simplicity and innocence, proceeded to make his cabinet pudding and to flavor it with what he supposed was lemon extract,but what in reality was afterward ascertained by some flifteen or twenty individuals to be croton oil! The demand for scalded milk, dry toast, etc. has been unprecedented ever since. No one attaches any blame for this accident to the proprietor of the hotel, who is, in every sense, several degrees above the average of landlords. The accident, in fact, is not without its blessings. It was worth a dozen sermons uoon the text, "In the midst of life we are in death." I doubt not but that all who were afflicted gave more real, earnest thought for the time being upon the things of eternity, than they had before given in all their lives. 9
A THOUGHTFUL writer suggests that every firm of architects should contain at least one lady partner, to plan pantries, closets, shelves, hooks and places to tuck away things in Jdwelling houses, an evident necessity which architects of the male persuasion have hitherto failed to comprehend or provide for.
THE old penitential monks, used to bang skulls in their cells to remind them of thefr latter end. An Indianapolis man has a boil which answers the same purpose with him, aud causes him to use a stove pip for a chair.
