From the New York Commercial Advertiser. Elegant Furniture—Its Style and Cost. There is evinced a real artistic excellence in the manipulation of modern furniture. All lines are avoided, and curves of beauty and other elegant, easy forms are carefully studied. We see tbis great improvement from the heavy to tbe graceful and light particularly illustrated in the style of beds and other furniture necessary for bedrooms. All those somber, dingy-looking bedrooms are, thank fortune, obsolete certainly in this country, if they are still tolerated in some old castles of Europe. The modern bed is found rather low, with handsomely-coh-ered backboard the footboard is quite low, and generally presenting a plainer appearance than the headboard. A black walnut set of the first style and make can not be purchased for les3 than $1,000 this would be inlaid with marquetrie. French walnut and ebony are used as garnitures.
A rosewood set for a bedroom, handsomely inlaid with marquetrie, can be had for $1,700. The dressing mirror and bureau is a perfect wonderment of artistic richness. The mirror, of heavy French plated glass, extends to the floor, giving a splendid view to the entire figure. Center tables are still very fashionable, and the finishing of these very pretty ornaments are very elegant and certainly picturesque in effect. The oval and ovalparallelogram forms are mounted on four richly carved branches, extending from a solid pedestal. Some of these tables are marked as high as $800.. We were shown one that was composed of 200 kinds of wood. Tables with Formosa, Bismarck and Lisbon marble tops are recherche. The styles are various, and there is a sort of uniformity in the general appearance of the tables.
Parlor suits of the Maria Antoinette pattern are very elegant. The covering is of a delicate sea-green satin, the woodwork rose and inlaid with gold. The designs are serpentine curves, bronze medallions and skillfully-wrought scrollwork. Some of the chairs are adorned with puffings extending around the seat and up the center of the back. Tassels are pretty ornaments, and just this season very popular. A cabinet de musique is a recherche piece of fujniture it is made of rosewood and elaborately inlaid with artistic and unique designs in marquetrie, and by paying $2,000 you can place in your porlor a cabinet de musique, etageres, inlaid with marquetrie, with mouldings, of ebouy. French cylinder secretarie, inlaid with ebony, ivory and gold jardines, pedestals, beautifully ornamented.
The mode parlor is not crowded with an endless number of pretty ornaments of course there ftre costly works of vertu, but not a reckless profusion, as was seen some seasons ago.
Hall-stands are still in use some prefer the cabinet style, while others are pleased with the sBaaller and less pretentious hat-stand.
French walnut furniture for the diningroom, of the Louis Frieze style. There must be perfect harmony in all this elegance of furniture. For example, the carpets, curtains and upholstery must have the same colors, same designs, and the parlor carpet corresponding in pattern with that on the hall and stairs. And who can possibly object to all this refinement
How They Sliave in China.
A fellow who has been shaved in China says that his barber first strapped his razor on his leg, and thell did the shaving without any lather. The customer remonstrated, but was told that the lather was entirely useless, and had a tendency to make the hair stiff and tough and was, therefore, never used by persons who had any knowledge of the face and its appendages.
After the beard had been taken off— and it was done iu a very short time—the barber took a long, sharp needle shaped spoon, and begau to explore his customer's ears. He brought up from numerous little crevices, bits of wax and dirt that had been accumulating since his childhood. The barber suddenly twisted his subject's neck to one side iu such a manner that it cracked as if the vertebrae had been dislocated. "Hold on!" shouted the party, alarmed for the safety of his neck. "All right," replied the tonsor, "me no hurt you," and he continued to jerk and twist the neck, until it was as limber7 as an old lady's dish-rag. He then fell to beating the back, breast, arms and sides with his fists, then he pummeled the muscles until they fairly glowed with the beating they received. He then dashed a bucket of cold water over his man, dried his skin with a towel, and declared that his work was done. Price, two ceuts.
From the Louisville Courier-Journal. About Adam. We have always believed in Adam. We have looked upon him as one to whom mankind has been under peculiar obligations. Standing by the side of Eve as the fir&t married man, dressed in a sumptuous bear-skin, he appears to us, as we look backward through the dim vista of the centuries upon him, as a persou indispensable to the future of his race. Certain philosophers would try to make us believe that that majesty figure is a monkey and sometimes the results of human events, elections for instance, seem unaccountable, except upon the Darwinian hypothesis. But we hold that the man who would reflect upon the dear departed in such an ungrateful way does, not deserve the sympathies of his kind as for ourselves, we intend to
nail our fig-leaf to the mast and cling to the old Adam. What he knew about farming served him in good stead|in the hour of his disappointment, and, though overmuch given to lying in the shade and munching apples, we know that when he found himself one morning on the wrong side of a certain garden gate he indulged iu on unmanly repinings— he neither whimpered over his fate, nor made faces and shook his fist at the guardian of the forfeited premises, but diligently set himself to work to develop the ordinary crab into the New York pippin.
Have You Seen Her?—A young lady who for the last five years has been a leader of fashion in New York, and who may be seen twice a week in her elegant caleche driving a pair of superb ponies iu Central Park, has recently stated, in the select circle to which she belongs, that the only article in existence, which imparts beauty and lustre to the complexion without ultimately imparing the texture of the skin, and causing it to collapse and wrinkle, is

The name of the distin

One bottle in such cases will convince the most incredulous of the curative effect
Cleanse the Vitiated blood, whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions or Sores, cleanse it when you find ft oostructed and sluggish in the veins: cleanse it when it is foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure and the health of the system will follow.

HAIR YICrOR,
For the Renovation of the Hair! The Great Desideratum of the Age! A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair is soon restored to its original color and the gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are destroyed, or the glands ftrophied or decayed. But such as remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sediment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from falling oft and consequently prevent baldness.
