That Blackmailing Euterpise. THE INFAMOUS ATTEMPT of those notorious women, Woodhul' and Claflin, to destroy the reputation of Henry Ward Beecher, and of the wife of one of his intimate friends, has not only met with signal failure, but seems to have insured the utter extinction of those female nuisances. They were bent upon making a sensation in their black-mail-ing weekly at all hazards, and they made it by declariug the most popular clergyman in America to be not only a seducer and a lecher, but a miserable coward, and a villain of the deepest dye.
Acommunity so curious and excitable as this, could not fail to best irred by so startling an announcement. In less than twenty-four hours after the Weekly had been published it was selling for $1 a copy, and now the rate is reported to be $5. The singularity attendant upon this vile slander is that nobody, not even the coarsest and the most depraved, pretends to believe that it has the least foundation in fact. Sinners and saints agree in denouncing the authors of the atrocious calumny, expressing the wish that they might be sent to the State's prison for a term of years.
WOODHULL AND CLAFLIN
have made a serious blunder, and have, in all probability, put a quietus upon their black-mailing career. They thought naturally enough, that New York and New Yorkers would stand anything but it appears that even we have our limitations of decency. The female brokers were aware that Mr. Beecher would not, and could not descend to notice the attack upon himself, and, therefore thought they were free from prosecution. Their liability to arrest, however, for circulating obscene publications was something they did not count upon, and their commitment to jail shook their faith in metropolitan immunity for villainy. From present indications they will not be allowed to issue any more of the numbers of their paper, at least of the sort that created this sensation, and unless they do, they must again suspend their publication.
THE MOTIVE
for their stupendous slander is plain. Their Weekly had died of inanitiou, and in the first number of its re-issue they had concocted the story from pure diabolism, which must, as they knew, amaze and shock reputable people, and appeal to and delight the vulgar and the prurient. With such an initial number, and with such a revolting prestige, they were confident of re-establishing their infamy, and of reviving their opportunities for black-mail. Moreover, they wished to wreak their vengeance upon a prominent journalist, who, from a mistaken chivalry, had at one time been brave enough to advocate their cause. With this purpose in view, they assailed his sweet and spotless wife as disloyal to him, and as guilty with his nearest and dearest friend. That they have so completely failed in their iniquitous end, should be a cause of congratutlaion among all respectable people.
that none of the papers here—not even of the licentious weeklies—ha ve reproduced any part of the original slander. Mr. Beecher, instead of being soiled, stands fairer and whiter to-day than ever before. The gentle lady at whom such a dastardly stab has been made is the recipient of sympathetic visits .and the kindest attentions from the best women in town, while her gifted husband, who has not had a few political foes, has found them friends since he has been so unjustly aud so brutally assaulted.
From the Council Blufts Bugle.
Chased by an Elk.
As is well known to a majority of our citizens, Thomas Fletcher, of the Merchants', on Broadway, has a large elk which he obtained from one of the numerous eircus combinations that visited Council Bluffs during the past season. For convenience, the animal is tethered to a stake not far from the sidewalk during the day time, aud there he was a few days ago when a stranger passed along the walk, not many feet from him. Through carelessness iu securing the rope to the stake, or from some cause or other, it was not fastened as it should have been, and ottered no resistance whatever when the ruminant mammal made a dash at the unsuspecting pedestrian. Realizing at once that he was "iu for it," aud that a huge antler* elk was a most undesirable opponeut with which to contend, the gentleman gave leg bail forfiimself and his life in good style, and to the infinite amusement of those who fancied themselves sufficiently distant from his elkship to be out of all danger.
Among these latter was Rosecrans, well known to all who patronize the Council Bluffs & Omaha Street Railway line. He was standing on or near the corner of Broadway and Center street at the time, and by some means or other attracted the attention of the elk, which, if we may be allowed to conjecture, was beginning to feel itself trilled with somewhat. Abandoning the chase of the stranger, the animal made "lickity-brin-dle" for Rosey, who at once realized that discretion, iu such a case at least, was the belter part of valor. Accordingly, he took to his heels up Center street, toward his residence, but soon discovering that the now thoroughly infuriated animal wai rapidly gaining upon him, he cleared the fence at one boui and alighted among the sunflowers ou the inside of the inclosure. His feet had barely touched the earth when the huge antlers came crash-
iug against the fence. Fortunately for Rosey they became locked between the boards, and held the elk a prisoner, thus permitting Kosey to secure the end of the rope with which it had formerly been tied. To make him fast to the fence was the work of a moment. Rosey has come to the conclusion that hunting elk Isn his forte nor what it is "cracked up" to be, and 'tis said that whenever the little circumstance detailed above is men tioned, he invariably "smiles." Those who saw him chasing the elk, say that his speed was greatly superior to that ever made by any B'ackfeet Indians, or even by a Comanche on horseback.
Partington, in illustration of the pro verb, A soft answer turneth away wrath," says It r* better to speak parigorically of a person than to be all the time flinging epitaphs at him."
Have You Soen Her?—A young lady who for the last five years has been a leader of fashion in New York, and who may be seen twice a week in her elegant caleche driving a pair of superb ponies in Central Park, has recently stated, in the select circle to which she belongs, that the only article in existence, which imparts beauty and lustre to the complexion without ultimately imparing the texture of the skin, and causing it to collapse and wrinkle, is HAGAN'S MAGNOLIA BALM. The name of the distinguished member of the beau monde who made this exclamation cannot with propriety be given, but it may be mentioned en •passant that she has spent several years of her life in Europe, and is familiar with all the arts and preparations employed by the court beauties of the old world to enhance their charms.
