Oakland, Cal., Transcript, Oct. 23d. L&dy journalist.

"Olive Harper" (Mrs. E. L. Gibson), who has long been a resident of Oakland, has been engaged in one of the editorial departments of the Alta California, and tyeot to her place on last Monday. ,Within a feiv mdilt.hs this lady has made xhefeelf an extensive ana valti^ble literary reputation by her descriptive and fanciful letters to the Alta and the St. Louis Olobe.

Her advancement as a public, writer has been rapid, brilliant and unprecedented, and is altogether due to substantial merit. Less than a year ago she began to publish occasional humorous sketches in the Oakland papers, varied with others of a serious and pathetic character these attracted the attention of the general press, were extensively republished both here and at the East, and led to her engagement with the proprietors of tne Alta and St. Lous Olobe as traveling correspondent Her letters from Yo Semite, the. Big Trees, and other points df fashionable and spedtadular attraction, were generally considered the tiaost origihal, piquant and attractive that have ever been published from those places and haVe procured her va-i-idiis oilers of advahtagequs literary engagements, but \Hth admirably good sense she has chosen a' situation with the ublishers who have contributed mbst to

From the San Francisco Chronicle.

Bearing the Judicial Market. About two weeks ago McKee* of the Nineteenth District Court, was in San Diego on judicial business. While there a very aggravated case of trespass was brought to his attention. The aggrieved party was Don Juan Forster, a wealthy ranchero, whose premises had been rudely invaded and a portion of his herds devoured by a grizzly bear. Judge McKee was wrathful at this foul foray on the part of the bear, and at once suggested the propriety of sending out a posse comi

tates, armed with writs of quo warranto and Henry rifles. This course was resolved upon, and the Judge* accompanied the expedition, well heeled with banner, brand and bow, or the more improved modern substitutes therefor. Three miles from the ranch they came upon the mangled body of a fine young steer, with his tongue torn out, and thereupon Judge McKee announced to his companions-in-arms that the corpus delicti having been duly proven, it now onlv remained for them to ferret out the assassin. The pessee comitatus consisted of the Judge,Don Juan Forster, Mr.jPrior and Mr. O'Doherty. About fifteen miles from the ranch they came in sight of the body of another- mute steer, and close beside the corpse the murderous bear was discerned squatting upon his haunches and placidly scratching nis nose with his paw. Mr. O'Doherty looked inquiringly toward Judge McKee, and the Judge remarked that this was a clear case of flagrante delictu, at the same time letting fly a leaden mandate. The'bear acknowledged service of summons by promptly dropping on all-fours and advancing toward his assailant, whereupon the court hastily adjourned, with the bear in pursuit. Such flagrant disrespect for the judicial ermine aroused the ire of Mr. Prior, who sent in a lucky shot, just in time to avenge the outraged majesty of the law and prevent the rapacious bear from topping off his noonday lunch with a raw district Judge.

From the Leavenworth Commercial, An Old Story Revamped. An attempt was made to sell a reporter of this paper yesterday. We are pained to record that fact. But it is true. To the everlasting discredit of this nineteenth century's civilization it must be said that an intelligent citizen desired to have a false story placed before the readers of the Commercial to-morrow morning as the truth. A youthful sprout of the law asserted to us that in the Second Ward "a plucky Irishman who applied for registration, was refused by the inspectors because his failed to bring his certificate of citizenship, which, for safe keeping, he bad pasted upon his bed-room door. But Patrick was not to be so easily denied, and not long after his first application, appeared before the astenished inspectors with his bed-room door on his back, to which was paeteHbe-requlred certificate. Patrick vyas registered,' and departed rejoicing over his success

Now we-desire to- inform our legal

friend that the above is too thin. They tried it on a New York reporter last week and more than that, forty-seven years ago the statement was made in the same city, but a little different. It was the truth then. The voter had pasted the certificate under the roof of bis house to stop a leak. Instead of walking into court with the bed-room door on his back, he went in with the entire dwelling under his arm. The court sent for a hook and ladder company to put him out.

The greatest want in the present age is men and women, healthy in mind and body. The continued headaches, weaknesses, nervousness, aud varying ailments which afflict women are generally the result of imperfect action of the stomach and other vital organs.

It was.through their forecase and friendly assistance that Mark Twain was presented to the country to them Chas. Warren Stoddard and other meritorious writers owe much of their celebrity and now they have on hand another candidate for national fame, whose brilliant imagination and rare felicity of expression will lead invariably and swiftly td a splendid success. As a huhlorous writer, "Olive Harper" has no equal in this part of the country. In more serious composition, her stj^le is original, vigorous, and attractive, and displays.a won derful fertility of invention. Her relatives and friend in Oakland have reason to be proud of the extraordinary success which she has already accomplished, the distinguished position which she now occupies, aud of the rare and priceless faculties which she now has an opportunity to display. 1i
