City and Neighborhood.

No COURT to-day.

OLD PROBABILITIES is not so reliable as he ought to be.

THE Bloomfield Democrat will bloom no more. It is dead.

WILL our subscribers report complaints at this office (up stairs.)

THE Prairie City Guards will have a meeting Friday evening for the purpose of reorganizing.

THOSE coal bins being put in on the west side of the Court House are cavernous openings.

NOT a case in the municipal court. Better abolish the tribunal ere it ceases to be self-sustaining.

A SON of W. E. Hendrich died last afternoon. Funeral from family residence to-morrow at 11 A. M.

THE St. Louis Democrat, in its hotel personal column, alludes to the Hon. M. A. Osborne, of Terre Haute.

MR. AND MRS. AARON CONDIT, of Minnesota, are visiting the Rev. Blackford Condit, father and friends, in this city.

THE last paragraph of the notice of Mrs. Parry at the Wigwam, was accideatly misplaced in our issue of yesterday.

THE genial Auditor of Vigo, Royse, is enjoying rural life. His efficient deputies are making out the delinquent lists meanwhile.

THERE was considerable commotion created in the city by a false alarm of fire, caused by the scent of pine emoke last evening.

^WILL our friends furnish us with items of interest By thus doing they will not only confer a favor on ourselves, but also the reading public.

OSCAR SHRYER, brother of the hardware dealers of that name in this city, is editing the Stockton (Cal.) Tribune, and is doing well in the world.

WE were pleased to see Mr. James O'Mara, Deputy City Marshall, on the street without crutches, looking as well as could be expected under the circumstances.

THE many friends of James M. Lyons, will be pleased to learn that he is rapidly recovering from the serious illness with which he has been afflicted for the past fortnight.

THEY are having a lively time in Cincinnati over the question of coal demand and supply. The Cincinnati & Terre Haiite Railroad is receiving another good advertising.

Miss MAUDE FREEMAN, daughter of S. R. Freeman, is trying the virtues of water cure, at Watkins, New York, a beautiful and attractive retreat in Western New York.

'"THE latest simple invention combining usefulness with simplicity, is the Japanese fire kindler, consisting of a prepared torch of combustible material, which when ignited will burn some fifteen minutes, thus kindling block coal into a blaze. The feippches pr torches co&t but ope^ept«

Encouraging.

A few days since an agent of European capitalists came to this city on a secret mission. He was investigating the stand ing of some of our Western railroads in the financial world. He stated to confidential acquaintance whom he casually met, and who is engaged in railroading, that he had facts and figures showing that the Cincinnati & Terre Haute Railroad is an enterprise that will meet with financial support among the great capital ists'he represents. He said, however, that he did not come West especially to examine into the condition of that line but rather to make a critical survey of several others which be would not name said he had paid but little attention to the C. & T. H. R. R., in person, but that facts and figures had been furuished him by others who had been investigating, or words to that effect.

The Pulpit.

Rev. E. F. Howe, at the Congregational Church* Regular Sunday services at Centenary Church.

Services as usual at both Presbyterian Churches. At the United Brethren Church, Rev. Parker Milligan will officiate.

A SAD and probable fatal accident occurred Tuesday afternoon. A Mr. Yough, a tinner, while putting spouting on the roof of the brewery, on Poplar street, between Ninth and Tenth streets, slipped and fell head-foremost, a distance of fourteen feet, to the ground, causing concussion of the brain, breaking the left arm, and severely brusing one of his knees. He is also internally injured, and at this writing is supposed to be dying. He has a wife and family. -v

WE learn from Mr. Miller, that the constructors of the coal sheds for the new gas works experienced sensations something similar to rolling ten pins, yesterday. By some mishap one of the sheds tumbled down, knocking the others like the pins in a bowling alley. We also learned that two or three of the retort houses will be ready for firing up tonight, but the works will not be ready for manufacturing, inside of three weeks.

THE local scientists of the Capital city, are to hear both sides of the Darwinian question, this winter. B. Waterhouse Hawkins will represent the negative, and Prof. E. S. Morse the affirmative of the question. Would it not be to the interest of science for the Terre Haute members of tfie A. A. A. S. to attend the course? 'V")/

THE news boys are instructed to sell copies of the GAZE/TE at the rate of three cents each, and in cases where they don't offer any change when a nickel is given them, it is a hint that they are not strictly honest. In many ca9es, however, liberal-hearted persons refuse .to wait forchange, in which case the urchins make something extra.

THERE is no excitement over the near approach of the Presidential election, though both parties are working with wonderful will and efficient energy to rally their forces for the fray once again. If the horse epizootic should prevail, there would be quite a number of both parties who would never reach the pol's who otherwise will.

THE business room of the Evening GAZETTE, newspaper is up stairs, first door south of the job office of Hudson & Rose, North Fifth street. We shall be delighted to greet all our old friends, as well as new ones, at the before-mentioned place. Remember the place, up stairs, over the office of the job department.

Bev. S. M. Stimson will preach, usual, at the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Parry will lecture at Pence's Hall, at the regular'hours for service.

Preaching at Asbury M. E. Church at 101 A. M., and at 7 P. M-., to-morrow, by Rev. J. M. Crawford, of Indianapolis. The public are respectfully invited.

To Our Subscribers.

In the hurry and flurry incident to the change of proprietorship and management of the Evening GAZETTE we were unable to get our paper of yesterday out on good time in consequence the carriers failed to deliver papers promptly, and, in fact, some of our subscribers did not receive the paper at all last evening. We will shortly have this department of the paper, now new to us, better in hand, when we will obviate cause of complaint on the part of our patrons.

MR. JAMES H., "HARRY" DOUGLASS, (for short) has just returned from a visit of a week's duration in Parke county. He struck a rich lead in the insurance line. He says he thought for awhile last night that Mrs. D. would be drawing the policy on his life. He fell in with the rear guard of a charivari party who were beating a hasty retreat, before the avenging gun of an irate groomsman, who swore that he would have no foolishness around his house on his wedding night.

IT seems that there is a lively rush on the news rooms for copies of the Woodhull &Claflin Weekly, containing particulars of the Beecher-Tiiton scandal. It being a sickening scandal the demand is all the greater. One remarkable fact connected with the demand for this disgusting sheet is that those who call at the news rooms for them are mere boys or little girls, indicating that adults are ashamed to call and purchase in person.

HABJ&Y POUGLASS has joined that vast 'wmy o.f notaries public, who 'are ev^r inarehlpg on to deeds of glory.

No marriage licenses issued, or real estate transfers recorded, during the forenoon. Everything is dull to-day, leaving but little for the chroniclers of city happenings to note.

TO-NIGHT, Gen. Ben. Harrison, of Indianapolis, will speak in this city in favor of the Administration in po^vef. He is a logical speaker, and will make a good speech—ftorta his stand-point.

^PERSONS gaining access to the Recorder's office, go about it after the manner of men who want their Sabbath toddy^ where the Sunday liquor law is enforced —viz.: go in at the back door.

JUD BUTTON returned with his bride last aftefnoon. IPhe twain frill take Up tbeir residence at the Conner Of Bight and Ohio streets, until their new house is constructed on North Fifth street.

THE Hunley mansion having been handsomely reconstructed and elegantly furnished, was "warftieel" by a house full of their specially invited friends last evening. The supper served was superb.

THE Hon. Joseph E. McDonald is announced to deliver a speech in favor of Liberalism—Democratic as well as as Republican—in this city Monday night Mr. McDonald is an argumentive speaker.

BRAZIL has a temperance paper which supplies a need long and sadly felt in that locality. The new publication is appropriately called the tyusader, and is handsome in typographical appearance, and is well edited.

WE tender our thanks, individually and collectively, to those who have showered congratulations upon us so lavishly since the first issue of the Evening GAZETTE, ensmalled—for the small sum of 10 cents per week.

HARRY CASSELL, of the Brazil Crusader, is organizing a society, the fundamental principles of which is the taking of a pledge not to treat to the beer a violation of the pledge obligating the vio« lator to treat the society to the oysters, however.

OUR former townsman, W.D. Griswold his wife and daughter, Mrs. Huntington Smith, are boarding at theT Southern Hotel, in St. Louis. Mr. G. is building, but will not commence housekeeping until spring, at which time their magnificent residence will be completed.
