it is often amnaing, tbougbofusn-

pr peinfai. to see tbe perseverance and ailrofrnesS manifested by eastern journals in holding op before tbe world some huge ill-looking, fungns growth item of n*ws. Now a wholesale mtirder ofa family by an inebriated ton occupies tbeir caiod and attention, and, after tbe first formal annonncetnent, the public and private life of eacsh member oftbe ill-fated family!* heralded to the world. Highly wrought descriptions of the circtiinstance ia allits particular*,- and actual representations of the mansion or residence, from garret to cellar, showing tbe #pots of blood on the doors and walls, giving the different *ttitudes of the actors in the terrible tragedy, Ac., are drawn op from observation and ii/onnatiou gained on the spot, and passed around for inspection. lb? smallest, particular not .withheld the feelings of the sufferers are not consulted, and, they exclaim, why should they bet does not the tragic epsiodiB, as aodn as it is completed, become public property? Then a divorce case (in high life,, of cour«c) in which the testimony in tolo, is presented through column after column, to an ftU-absorbing, scandal-lov-ing public. Love letters of the most nauseat jngcbarftCter preprinted withoutrerye. Minute porsonal descriptions are given of the male and female bipeds, who happen, by the force of cijjWfmataneM, to figure ja the farce' or tiagedy, ah the case may i»o, and who tj^us become the ephemeral Hon* of tTi© affair ,an4 -^,e time.

And now we have another item. The purchase.ufiio op $ "Vernon by the Ladies of these United States. In orJer to accomplish which, the immortal Father of his country is brought down, as it were, from hie exalted position, and atrangely associated in all manner of ways with Mount Vernon, the ladies of- tbe United titaWi, the "bones of the deceased," and onedobn A. Wwhlngtpn, who happens to be the possessor of the #po where those botes He buried. Tht$ latter indi vidua), through some solicitation, and for the sum of 1200,000 consents to give a warrantee deed for the aaid Mount Vernon, to tbe aforesaid ladies, and tbe ladies in question, or some of them, are making herculean efforts to raise the desired amount. It is a plain business transaction between Mr. Washington and the ladies, and if they, in their sagacity and wisdom, agree to give the number of dollars specified above, who can blame Mr. Washington for extending his tight hand, and receiving, from the fair Regent of the association, the envied sum?

1 5

But tins makes the item—the honfiw around which editors generally aro assembled, and, like so many Camanche Indians. making night and day alike hideous with their dolorous wailiug. attempts at tarcasm, sympathetic appeals &c., forgetting, in almost every instance, to give plain, straight-foi ward statement or armen I for or against the purchase

If the object is worthy any attention that attention should be give* it, and not in the wav of ridicule, nor, on the other hand, in "a foolish attempt to nmaufacture sympathy, but instating plainly the facti, condensed or at length, and whether or not, in the end, a great and good or bad object would be accomplished

isiTotli® FEixiros:—Many /attempts hare within tbe la|| few ^ear* to ish a society for thJ^MactMie^f stteaUibsic in our city. At the present moment we are destitute of such a means of contributing to the rational enjoyment, not only of those who take pleasure in the execution of music, but also of those whose enjoyment, as regards music, arises from simply listening to its enchanting strains. Shall we not therefore, embrace the opportunity by the announcement of Professor Meininger and some of the Lady Teachers in the Female College, that they are ready to contribute their valoable professional services gratuitously towards the formation of such a society? Let ns throw aside our personal predilections and prejudices, whether as regards men or system of mtt. die, and emulate the generosity of those wao aie thus willing to bear so important apart in this matter! By responding cheerfully, aud at once, to this invitation, we shall secure a choral society that shall at the same time, become a source of delightful recreation, and of solid improvement to the institutions of our city.

A LOVER OF MUSIC

A, Bride in the wrong Bed. We have the Cincinnati Euqurireras voucher for the following: A newly married pair put np at the Spencer Hou*e— they went out shopping—retuned—-bride had left some things—she quietly slipped out, leaving him asleep—found her lost articles—returned—m is to ok Main for Broadway—got into the Marti son instead of the Spencer—it looked a little strange— asked, boy if she was in the Spencer—boy said y«, not fully understanding her— she told hitn to lead her to 40—she partly disrobed and got into bed—ox pec ted her husband momentarily—fell asleep— the occupaut of 48 Madison, an Indiana merchant, returned from the Theatre—a little tight—quietly went to room—to bed —to sleep. The account proceeds.

How long the two reposed there side by side, with only afoot of space between them all unconscious of each other's presence, is not exactly known, but probably about an hour, when a tremendous noise was heard in the apartmcbt from which female screams issued wijdl/i pierciugly ^nd ceaselessly. A, ,t 'J be hotel was in an uproar proprietors, clerks, waiters, pollers and guests, dressed and half dressed, were at the door of "forty-eight" in a few, minutes, blocking np the entrance, and asking each other eagerly, "What is the matter?" "For God's sake tell us what is the trpuble?"

The cause of this outcry may be imagined. The bride had awakened about midnight, and putting her hand over l.er husband, it fell upon the IndianianVface, and the Roft, warm touch aroused him at once. He did not understadd it exactly, tliouch ho did not dislike it, and in a moment more, Mr*. R. said: "My dearest husband, where have you been all this while? "Husband," echoed the merchant, beginning to see, like Lord Tinsel, that be had "made a small mistake here "I am nobody's husband. I reckon, my dear madame, you're in the wrong bed.

In tbe wrong bed—horrors, tho't the bride. What would her liege lord—what wonld the curious world say? And Mrs R. screamed terribly and sprang from the couch just as her companion did the same. He WM fully
