Tbe members oflho committe, and otiers, participated freely in the examination, and it was evident that tho pupils were donversant, not only with verbal lessons of the text-books, but with the general facts and laws of the Sciences themselves.

expresses bis views on long sermons: Time was when preaching, in many sections of the country was once in tu or four weeks, and then long sermons were tolerated. Now preaching is within the reach of most persons every Sabbath, and even twice in the same day. To sit now, and be bored for an hour and a half by any man, in the delivery of a single sermon, is preposterous, but to lie thus boiel by a man of ordinary talents is enough to disgust g'»od men and force sinners to swear! "When a sermon reaches forty-five to sixty minutes, we regard the audience as justifiable in rising np and leaving the house, thereby expressing the! opposition to the sermon in a style so terse and epigrammatic as not to be misunderstood.
With ns, a sermon has passed tho Rubicon when it exceeds forty minutes, uuless the preacher bo a man'possessing rare power of analysts, and remarkable force and beauty of language—presenting bis theme with au eloquence that charms,
.... ith that critical acumen that fascinates
richness of diction that captivates
AN OLD SXYLKU SRRHOX.—The Bi.tte Record refers, in high terms, to a sermon delivered by a preacher of Orville.
He took David and Goliah for his text, and, with a sufficient quantum of rattling and thumping, expounded after lliis fashion:
Now, my hearers, what do yc suppose WHS the reason that Darid was so mighty willin' to get out and fight Goliah? was it because he wanted to sarvo God? No!
Was it because ho had religion intil him? No! Was it because be wanted to do good ginerally? No!
I'll tell you what ho did it for, and there ain't no use anybody denyin' on't—he was struck after one o' Saul's gals.
