This is called shoddy. The finer qualities are carded, baled and sold to woollen manufactures, and it appear in the market in the form of beautiful cassimeres and satinetts. Other portions of it, that is too short in fibre to spin, is sold to felters, who make it into hat bodies, and felt cloth; it is often made

into coats without a seam. We saw a

lot of felt coats on Water street, the other day, without a thread in the cloth, or a seam or a stich in making—felt ott of shoddy—which cost the mannfacturer about <forty> cents to produce, and which could be retailed here at 75 cents each; a warm and serviceable garment for a laboring man. With careful economy nothing need be lost; and vilest old woollen rag by the help of art and machinery is made into most beautiful cloths. One mill in Rock Island is said to turn out from three to four tons of shoddy per week, for
