A Thrilling Incident.

A

During the examination of tho cases of nllegod frauds upon tho Pension Office at ttochcHter, qttite an exciting incident occurred. Captain Minor, a vetoran of the war of 1812, a very intelligent old getitle*tnan, was introduced as a witness. He was shown one of his old pay rolls by Mr. Perkins, a clerk of tho Pension Oilice «t Washington, and asked if he recollected several of his soldiers whose name* were pointed to him unon it. lie readily answered that ho din.

Question by the District Attorney—Do yon recollect a soldier in yonr company iy the narno ofUarrengor 1

Answer—I dtf very well. Question—Would you know that man now

Answer—I do not think I should it is along time aince I have seen him—moro than forty jtoara,' a »,*

Commissioner Conklin then called upon Mr. Barrcngar, who wa* in the room among tho witnesses from Tioga county, to stand up. He rose in a diatant part of the room, stood firm and upright, in every respect a soldier, and bowed respectfully to his old captain, who, after viewing him for a moment, shook his head dubiously and said. "I do not recollect him," sind added, J'Uantlemen, it is arlong thne aince I have soin hi«n. It is forty-six yours this very since 1 led with my company tli» Anwfieatvamr of three tlio* •and men into 8«k

tension that the worthy Marshal, Col. allowed hi* patriotism to get the start of his love of order and decorum, and forget to rap with hi* ^Wial promptness. And th* face of the good natnrod Commissioner, Mr. Conklm, seemed more Moiling than ever, and to na appeared mora expressive satisfaction than of anger. Tke last w#«aw of tlw old weddiers was after the adjournment of court, when they wore together in the midst of« circle of people fighting over their old battles.— & a O S 2 7 3

There aro hundreds of farmers in the western country, who aw most of the time either destitute of vinegar entirely, or make nae of some slops, which not only unpalatable, but decidedly unhealthy. The vinegar mannfaetnrcd from acids enters largely into the consumption of towns and cities, and to some extent into that of the country also. Whiskey with all its adulterations, is used for the purpose of making pickles, and in that manner lends its aid to the destroyer of human life. Many other different methods of procuring the sours of life are practiced, and many of which are not only productive of deleter ious influences to the health of ourselves and our children, but requires far moro labor than ought to be bestowed upon that brunch of a nouse-wife's business.

We livein an age of labor-saving machines, and we ought to economize, both iu labor and money, as well as in the more important. And to apply a little Yankee ingenuity in this caho is not so difficult a? many people imagine. Almost every Sam ily in the conntry have the materials, for manufactoring pure cider vinegar, if they will only use them. Common dried apples, with a tittlo molasses and brown paper aro all you need to make the best kind of cider vinegar. And what in still better, tho cider which you extract from the apples, docs not dctract from tho value of the apples for any other purpos.

Honk your apples a few hours—washing and rubbing them occasioanly, then take them #ut of tho water and thoroughly strain tho latter through a tight woven cloth—put it into a jug, add half a pint of molaaar^ito a gallon of liquor, and a piece of cowfcIn brown paper, and sot in the sun, or hv the fire, and in a few days, yonr vinegar will be fit for nse. Have two jugs and use our of one while the other is working. No family need be destitute of gootl vinegar, if they will follow tho above tiircc ion s.—Nortkvxsttrn Farmer.
