WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOV. 17, 1858.
For President in 1*40:
JOHN J. ORITTBNDBN, Of Kentnrkr*
jfc#" The alitor of the Republican opposed to tlw-atr©*. Oar dWiY i« anxioas to know if it i* a religion*, or poaooiary opposition We panse for a reply.— Tlie "mndailla of «ociety*'—tbey whose rare respedalMlty ia not expected to give them broad and battel, are not terrified at Uncasing a theatrical performance. Religious people have aero plea, and ther fthonld cherish them and exact the respect of all well ordered men.
What ift our neighbor's opinion of fashfonable card plnyiny—eh Peter pitch into that and we will help put down a practice which in bnt one step from the bottom .-—Fort Wayne Timet.
Fashionable card flaying is one of the most degrading practicc* of the age Jt la virtoally training children for the loweat doptha of misery—it in a school in which the drunkard, the gambler, the thief and the murderer, recoive their, first lewon*. It is a school in which tho daughter is so educated at to make her a fit untociale of the libertine—the lowest of God's creation. The impression thus made npon the young feeds npon tho bettor jndgmont throngh life, and ten chances to one that the once promising yonth does not fall a victim to its infltwncd. Let parents look to this matter—let them choose some other amusement for their children—something in which the seeds of death do not germinato so readily.
Tho Terre-Haute Union complains of tho "scarcity of dwalling houses. There it a vefy ffreitt scarcity of dwelling houses in that village.—Lafayette 3our.
Mr. Journal, wo will have to send yon ^pne oX.M.'jEvoy'a Xerre-Haut# Directories, published last Spring—that will set you pretty near straight. Our "village," ft* you term It, grows from ono to two hundred houses year, and yet you may now walk for a dajf without finding a vacant dwelling house. Docs this ftugnr anything? How is it with your tnudholo? Half squares aud entire blocks standing empty—is that so?
A OaAcntret CoaaKcnos.—"The proper Rtodjr

The "mature philosophy," often'leaches ft man more about woman than is pleasant to know, Tho first lessons aro truly •loligtful, but when tfvosfcdeligbtful scenes begin to vroar awiy and you got along as far as the donblo xulo of Arte, thaa look out for stars in anew firmament.

Greek trading vessel arrived in this port about a fortnight ago, with two bof# on board, who reported thai on the previous day, Captain Constandi aud his son and daoghter were mordered in the most brutal and cold-blooded manner that has been heard of in modern times. It appears that the Eftihia left Candia, bound for Alexandria having on board a general cargo and eight persons, including the captain, his son and daughter, two sailor boys, and threo Tnrk*, who were passengers. on satisfactorily until they were about 15
miles from this place, when the Turks as ccrtained from the captain the position they were in. No sooner was this information acquired by them, than they murdered the captain and his son, violated the daughter, and then she also was doomed to the same fate which she so lately witnessed her father and brother suffer. The two boys, who were eye-witnesses to these cruel deod®, fled throngh fright to hide themselves amongst the cargo in tho hold. The Turks, who had ao far finished their inhuman work, and not taking the trouble to search for the two boys in otder that there might be no ono left to tell the talc, thought that it wonld answer their purpose as well to fasten the hatches of the hold, and after gathering all tho valuable articles that they could find, set fire to the vessel and put off to shore in her boat.— Luckily the fire did not do much injury, and the boys, after an hour's exertion, succeeded in extricating themselves by a trap door. In all probability tho murderers would havo made their escape, but for tho strict quarantine regulations which are at present here and in attempting to land thoy were takon into custody by some officials who aro stationed up tho coast. In tho meantime the vessel arrived, and thus helped to carry out the ends of justice.— The three murderers woro quickly brought down bore, nnd, without much trial or delay, were as quickly condemned to die. The scene which followed took place at six o'clock on tho morning of the 28th of August, nnd although no one can doubt ts jnstnoss, it mast have been as horrible a spcctaclo as I havo ever heard or read of. The three culprits were led forth at the same time to threo d$ the most public {lades in town. The first was strung up in tiie market place, on a hook at a butcher's shop tho sccond suffered a similar fate io front of one of tho principal mosques and the third was hung in the gAte of tho custom house, in sight of the ships in tho harbor. After lunging for four hours, with a large placard snsponded from the neck of cach, in Arabic characters, stating tho nature ofthcir orime, as a warning to others to detect hem froracolnDmiuing such barbarities, they were cut down, and buried in the ground allotted to murderers. Thus ended the dreadful drama. Yours. mi,v

ry, a friend came in to lighten our labors by pleasant conversation. "What is the most common idea of a libarary?" said he. 'A workshop, perhaps ia which are all manner of tools. "What is your idea?" "A dictionary in which wo can tnrn to any given subject and fiad the information w* desire." "Very fair, both these definitions, but I think I know one much better. When a lad about nixteen years of age, living as a neighbor of Dr. Mason, and aleo a member of his congregation, 1 was engaged in helping him to movo and arrange his valuable library. 'Hamilton,' said he, 'you bear a great name—a very great name bnt it is still more honorable to bear tho name of Christ! Hamilton, do you know what a libarary is? 'No sir.' •Well, sir, it is an army. Do yon see thos books? They are my soldiors 1 I am tho centurion. I call them down, and make them fight for me, my boy. Now you know what a libarary is, which is more than most folks do. Don't you forget it."—American Presbyterian.
