HUMBOLDT

There is one name which is held in snch honor as to iequirc no accessories of any Kort to give it dignity, and which haa been so held for a period longer than many »uppofte. Humboldt wan appointed an acting Privy Councillor of the Prussian Com t, with the titlw of Excellency, aud be retains that post now, as he enters, thirty years later, on the ninetieth year of hit. honored life. That honor WSH never before conferred npon one not of royal lineage and whatever lue we may set upon Mich a restriction, it is still the highest proof that the Prussian Government could give, that it for once recognized greatness superior to all other distinction.*.

More than thirty years yet earlier, Humboldt travelled extensively in South America, having left Europe by way of Cornnna, in Spain, in June, 1799. He spent the next thief years mainly in tho tropica] regions of Southern and Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies. In May, 1&04, lie reached Philadelphia on hi» homeward journey, and, viMting Wanhingiou and oUii«r pointn within reach during two month**, mailed from this port in August for Bordeaux. &nch WAS the tlien unnoticed visit of tlw great studentof physical ftcience who now, in the bodily weakness of ninety years, hot with the clear and Plrong mind which has ever distinguished him, receives the united honors of all jQed, from the most democratic lover «f science in the United States, to Queen Vic4»ria and her joynl consort on their Pros'* •atari tour.

It is the greatest and brightest feature of Humboldt's fame, that he ts accorded not more because he is great than because he iff jusu His character is, perhaps, more tban that of any scientific man of any age,

So much it seems pertinent to say at the passage of the eighty-ninth birth-day of this great master of science. He was born in Berlin, Sept. 14th, 17§9, and more than half a centnry since he visited this city, then a ripe traveler and acientific observer, who had spent fourteen years in anch service, and more than four years in tropical America. Mature and masterly in all departments of all the natnral aci enees at that time, be has not allowed a month of tbe fifty-five years since passed to go unemployed, and we need not wonder at hia attainments when we bear in mind his mental structure. To ns it may not be easily explained how the social and political struggles of this peiiod could avoid involving a man of such universal activity, and we choose to place it to the acconnt of a clearness of vision which conld see through the weakness of tho apparent or pretended friends of greater liberty and a higher social state, and, foreseeing their short comings, wait calmly for the slow progress of the ages. One thing is true, that Humboldt's influence on the Prussian Government has always been strongly liberalizing. Russia, particularly, owea him much in thi respect, and all Central Europe has felt more or less of his influence jr peace and advancement. A man who so advances physical ••cience, aud who so renders its pursuit illustrious, wieldf an influence sccoud to no other, without effort or exertion to give that influence any special ditection. —Philadelphia North American.
