Slxakspeare's celebrated tragedy of OtbellQ w»»|plfye4 to perfectionr at
Mr. T. P. Varuey personified the character of lago to perfection* itfot a loot, gestnre, muscle or step, seemed to be oat of place. Having ajnst conception of the character, he van perfectly easy and natural in all his illustrations. Mr. V. is fast gaining a reputation on the stage that lie Aky well bd prounJ of, nnJ we say, without fear of contradiction, that there aro not two start in the west who can perform the part of lago as well in he did on Thursday night, and wo understand that this was hits first attempt in that character.
Mr. G. Dearer, as Gassio, wak oasy and natural, and performed his part to the lettor.'" TIa maked'a good appearance, nttd i* quick and natural in his gestuies, and he may properly be ranked with those who aro termed good performers.
Misa E. M. Greener played the part of Dasdemonia well, The only fault that w( could point eutwaa in her voice. Her articulation is too much smnothered, it should be clear and distinct. She it perfect enough in her readings, and has a #ood conception of the character she attempts to road, and tiieao being the main feature* in good pcrfoinuances, all other iraporfectiona can be overlooked.
Mrs. Slocunt lias improved wonderfully in the |«j4 yean Tier laurel* are almost within reach, ami if sho continues and pHMSeveres, aho will be able to wear them before a great whilo. Aa Parthenia, she may justly be ranked with the best of female artists now on the stage. Sho is ItamUotne, and haa a good clear voice, and is always porfect in her parts, has a fine conception of character, and is easy and quick in her gestures.
The company now playing at tho Gatitles are tlie beat ever in Ter re-Haute and deserve a good patronage.
A fine bill is up for this evening—one new piece. For particulars alee programme.
Hurra for Terre-Haute. We are reliably informed that there is a favorable prospect of having erected, in this city, within the coming year, a first class Rolling Mill. A gentleman, from New York, was in the city a few days ago, and made the proposition that if our citizens would take $30,000 in stock he would furnish the balance necessary to put the mill in full operation. We also understand that $13,000 of the $3,0000 [sic] have been promised, and the gentleman went back to New York to arrange his business preparatory to entering into the above named enterprise.
We regard Terre-Haute one of the beat locations for a Rolling Mill, that can be found in the Western country. We do not say that to deceive any one, but we know just what we say. Located as we are, in the richest portion of the Wabash Valley, surrounded with inexhanstible [sic] beds of the best of coal and of iron ore, and everything else necessary to feed a rolling mill, we are only surprised that men of capital have deferred this matter so long. When we first heard of the project of building a rolling mill at Indianapolis we thought it the wildest scheme we ever heard of, and so it hat proven, for the proprietors cannot possibly run it three months in a year, and we doubt very much if it has been ran half that time since it has been completed. The citizens of Indianapolis have been over zealous in their efforts to build up a city, and in this respect have been imprudent, for two or three more such <missteps> will put them more than fifty years behind the age.—

Mr. Malhoilaal, Othello," is good, aadrtsUins the character with mooh power and ability. However, think Mr. M. haa one fault which be ahonld endeavor to remedy*" Be keep# his back too mnch to the audience, while apeakhig There are time* when thia cannot be avoided, and may be neceaaary at others, yet if it ia an approved mark of a good and natural performer, we mast acknowledge that we cannot appreciate the position Thia ia tha only fault we can point out in Mr. 31.'a performance*, and though alight one, jet we refer to it in the best of humor and with good intention*. With this exception, Mr. \I. will be hard to excel in the character of Othello, or an Iiigomar, and we know that his equal as Haversac, in the Old Guard, cannot be found in the west, and bnt few in tho Union.
Such failures has tendency to paralyze all kinds ofbaeiness, and when a city once geta a start down hill thus, money cannot check ita decline.
Do yon bear that
'George D. Prentice, Editor of the Lou tfville Journal, (one of the beet papers in the Union) will lecture in thf« city on Tneaday night next. His subject will be "American Statesmanship." Let every body turn out and hear thia gifted poet and walking dictionary of Politics.
The lecture will be at the Lecture Room of the New City School House, on North Fourth Street, at 7 o'clock.
